846 pp, 16mo (6 1/8" H). Thin burgundy leather over card covers/spine - gold lettering and decoration on spine, top edge gilt. Burgundy endpapers, sepiatone illustrations, including frontispiece, decorated title page. **No dustjacket or slipcase.** When his father dies penniless, Nicholas Nickleby must becomes the support of his mother and sister. His avaricious uncle, Ralph, arranges for his employment by Wackford Squeers, headmaster of a boarding school in Yorkshire for unwanted boys. Horrified by the treatment of the children there, Nicholas flees and one of the boys, Smike, begs to go with him. After a period as actors in Vincent Crummles' theatre in Portsmouth, they return to London and meet the charitable brothers Cheeryble who assist them. Romance and tragedy follow as Nicholas meets the love of his life and Smike dies of consumption, after which it is revealed that he was, in fact, Ralph Nickleby's son. Sunday School presentation inscription in elegant calligraphy dated 1931 on rear of frontispiece, crease rear pastedown, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, light wear at corners and bottom edge of covers.
