303 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Canadian War Museum Publication No. 25. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "Dealing briefly with the Swiss and Canadian mercenaries sent to Red River by Lord Selkirk in 1818, and the British garrisons supplied by the Imperial Government during the 1840s and 1850s, Dr. Stanley recounts in detail the organization and despatch of British and Canadian troops under the command of Colonel G.J. Wolseley to the newly formed province of Manitoba in 1870, the subsequent reinforcements sent to the West between 1871 and 1873 and the organization of the first militia units in Manitoba. The success of these several expeditions was owing, in large measure, not only to the officers and soldiers who took part, but also to the fledgling Department of Militia in Ottawa. These troop movements were facilitated by the construction of roads and the establishment of water communications between Fort William and Fort Garry. Drawing upon official documents and contemporary narratives, the author has written a fascinating account of the Red River Expeditions, bringing a fresh perspective to the story of Louis Riel in Manitoba, the Fenian Raids of 1871, and the military history of the Canadian federation." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint scratch on rear board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.
