297 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering/decoration on spine and front board, top edge gilt. Inscribed on front free endpaper: 'F.P. Keppel, with best wishes / from the author to the purchaser." Above which is written, in pencil, "GC Atkins / Columbia 1902". Part of the "American College and University Series". Ten b&w photographs, including the tissue-covered frontispiece (collated) - 4 by Ambrose Fowler, 1 by Karl Struss and 1 by August Patzig. Contents: Introductory; The Background; The University of To-day; Ways and Means; Educational Organization; Teachers and Executives; Students and Student Life; An Academic Year; Conclusion; Appendices: Statistics for 1857, 1890, 1901, 1913; Financial Summary, 1912-13; Student Enrolment; Geographical Distribution of Students, 1896, 1913; Statistics Regarding Buildings; Gifts of $50,000 and above, Class Memorials; Index. A news-paper clipping has been laid in at the front, "Dean Van Amringe on Columbia's Honor and Scholarship System.", with attendant browning to front pastedown and free endpaper. Light browing and scattered foxing on fore-edge and bottom of text block, tiny specks of color loss on boards/edges, one small slight corner bump and also at bottom of rear hinge, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered tiny and small faint foxing marks on endpapers and some preliminaries, page leaves 93 to 108 have light wrinkling at fore-edge - two have a small edge tear archivally taped.
