82 pp, 8 3/8" H. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, gilt lettering and illustration on front board. All edges gilt. Dark brown endpaper, many charming b&w illustration, including tissue-covered frontispiece - all present. The first appearance in book form - previously published in The Spectator. Contents: Sir Roger's Family; Mr. William Wimble; The Picture Gallery; The Widow; The Chase; The County Assizes; The Spectator's Return to Town. The fictional early 18th century Worcestershire baronet, Sir Roger de Coverley, is the centre of this collection of stories of English country life - hunting, wooing, going to law, etc. Some splitting to the paper on the inside hinges, two separations between page gatherings - pages are held firmly in th binding, small brown stain in the bottom margin of pages 57 to 65, very light foxing in the page gutters, moderate foxing to fthe frontispiece tissue guard, light browning at edges of the title page, some wrinkling and light browning the the fore-edge of the illustration list page, two old archival tape repairs to the fore-edge of the half-title page, corner crease on page 1, light soiling on verso of frontispiece, light edge wear to boards - moderate at cornes and at the top/bottom of the spine, light discolouration due to liquid splashes on the front board, light lean to spine.
