456 pp, 7 1/4" H, dark green cloth with black, white, gilt & red decoration/lettering on spine and front board, blind stamped decoration on rear board. Bevelled boards, all edges of textblock gilt, yellow endpapers. Six steel engraved illustrations including frontispiece and decorated title page (all present). No date (late 19th century). James Montgomery (1771-1854) was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, but spent his adult life in Sheffield, England where he was involved with the 'Sheffield Iris' and imprisoned twice for his journalistic activities. A philanthropist and poet, he is known for his hymn writing and several examples are contained in this volume, including: "Angels from the realms of glory"; "Prayer is the soul's sincere desire"; and "Songs of praise the angels sang". Bookstore stamp on rear pastedown, light toning in margins of pages, light to moderate wear including some tiny tears and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear to boards - a little more at corners, minor rubbing on boards.
