320 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(T)he biography of Dr. Paul Leon Rivard, whose practice covers thousands of miles in the trackless wilderness of northern Quebec and whose patients are lumbermen, Indians, trappers and, on occasion, horses. But most important, it is the story of a human being, a man who suffered a great loss and tried to run away from the world. Utterly lonely, he sought his hiding place in the backwoods and there in the great Abitibi forests the young doctor traveled by sledge, snowshoe and plane to minister to the sick and injured and encourage the lonely and derelict. Gradually he began to find that his concern for the problems of others gave him less and less time to dwell on his own, and one day, with some surprise, he realized that instead of losing himself in the wilderness he had truly found himself. Here are stories of dangerous journeys into the bush, of blizzards and wild animals, and of the doctor's constant battle with sickness and death; and, in a lighter vein, there are stories of the doctor's pet bear, his war with the railroad, his disagreement with the local clergy and its happy resolution." Some faint discolouration on top of text block, light browning at top/bottom edges of boards and spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mostly at top/boottom of spine and flap-folds including very small chips/tears, minor edge browning and on inside, dust jacket height is is slightly shorter than the book, now protected in a mylar sleeve.
