512 pp, 9 1/2" H. Medium green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decoration, front/rear boards with colour illustration by Sue Scullard. Cream endpapers, b&w illustrations. "This edition follows that of the single-volume (Oxford) edition of 1945, with minor emendations." The basis of the charming BBC series, this fictionalized autobiography follows the life of 'Laura', a bookish, nature-loving child as she grows up in the hamlet of Lark Rise (Juniper Hill, Oxfordshire) towards the end of the 19th century. We are introduced to all the characters of the hamlet - Queenie, who keeps bees and makes lace, her husband, Twister, who beat her only once and never again, Caroline Arles, who never lets the lack of money stand in the way of a good time, the quiet Methodists, Old Sally with the most amazing garden, etc. Fathers and mothers work hard to keep the ever-arriving children fed and clothed and Laura tells us much about how this was achieved. We watch her go off to school in the 'mother village', visit relatives in the much larger and more prosperous Candleford and finally begin her working life at the post office in Candleford Green under the benevolent supervision of Dorcas Lane. Light rubbing/wear at top/bottom of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, crease across spine approx. 1/2" up from the bottom edge. Slipcase has a very small bump at bottom rear edge, minor rubbing.
