55 pp, + photographs section, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Sepiatone photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper), additional sepiatone illustrations throughout text. "(C)ollects what are probably the first photographs taken in the Canadian west. These are the forty-nine photographs taken by Humphrey Lloyd Hime, photographer and surveyor attached to the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition, sent by the Canadian government in 1858 to survey the lands over which it hoped to gain jurisdiction when Hudson Bay Company leases expired in 1859. The plates are micrograin duotone photo offset reproductions from the original Hime prints. They have been reproduced actual size. The photographs are accompanied by maps, a detailed history of the (expedition) and an illustrated explanation of nineteenth-century photographic methods and equipment." Small group of four tiny light stains on top of text block. Dust jacket has tiny scuff on front panel, very light wear at top/bottom of hinges, light soiling on spine and hinge areas, two light ceases at bottom of front panel near hinge, minor browning at some edges, minor fading at top of flaps, one tiny edge tear, tape at inside top of spine/hinges.
