He did not spring from the legends of our English ancestors, nor from the Indian myths, but like America herself - of which he is a symbol - he just grew. Paul, like our countrymen, started on the East coast - in the Maine woods to be exact. As the nation grew, so did Paul and Babe, his faithful Blue Ox. Their first westward move was to the land of Hiawatha and the Great Lakes. Paul in his enthusiasm thought the great White Pine forests of Michigan and Wisconsin would last forever; but alas, they were soon exhausted, due to fire and wasteful exploitation. More careful this time, but still filled with a mighty urge for Logging - Paul went south into the Long Pine country. He even made the Mississippi his own private waterway, but again he and Babe got the wanderlust. This time they headed for the great Douglas Fir forest of the Pacific Northwest. Like the nation of which he is the symbol, Paul found this last western frontier a satisfying and soul stirring challenge. Here he and Babe could do more than Logging. Here were canals to dig, Bridges to construct, Dams to erect, Mountains and Glaciers to conquer. At last, 'Paul Bunyan the Work Giant' - like America, has come of age." Very small area of ink offset at top corner of free front endpaper (from dust jacket flap), book is slightly cracked at a few places, book is lightly cocked, bump at bottom corner of boards, light edge wear, one page leaf has small finger print smudges at top & bottom corners. Dust jacket has price inked out on front fla; has edge wear with tears, chips and creases; moderate soiling; a few tiny scuffs; large chip at bottom of spine and front hinge; 2" old tape stain on inside surface.
