192 pp, oblong 16mo (6 3/4" H x 8 1/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. "...a facsimile of a sketchbook filled with drawings and watercolors made by the Russian diplomat Pavel Petrovich Svinin (1787-1839) durng a stay in America in 1811-13, the years he served in the Russian consulate in Philadelphia...Among the sites he recorded so deftly are Niagara Falls; George Washington's home, Mount Vernon; views of New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Richmond; and many other subjects, such as steam boats, Indians, sea, river, and townscapes, plantations and mountainous terrrain...Also included are appropriate quotes and descriptions from Svinin's own travel books, and biographical notes on the people mentioned in the text." Two tiny faint stains on bottom of text block, a few tiny foxing marls on top of textblock. Dust jacket has light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small closed tears and wrinkles at top of flap-folds - now archivally taped, light rubbing, 1/2" sq laminate pull/color loss on rear panel, a couple of tiny scuffs.
