JOURNALS OF TWO CRUISES ABOARD THE AMERICAN PRIVATEER YANKEE., "A Wanderer". Introduction by Admiral E.M. Eller. (Noah Johnson.)
1 "A Wanderer". Introduction by Admiral E.M. Eller. (Noah Johnson.) JOURNALS OF TWO CRUISES ABOARD THE AMERICAN PRIVATEER YANKEE.
New York Macmillan 1967 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good-
156 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w reproductions, map. "Written by a young, ardently romantic ship's clerk who signs himself 'A Wanderer' (almost certainly Noah Johnson, these journals) record the heady adventures of the American privateer 'Yankee' on her first two voyages during the War of 1812. Only recently discovered among the possessions of a New England family, they are printed here for the first time. These historic journals bring vividly to life sea voyages that epitomized Yankee daring and skill, dedication to freedom, and Christian charity in dealing with conquered enemies. What life was like aboard a privateer and how these warships were manned, sailed, and deployed against the enemy is nowhere better illustrated than in these superb firsthand accounts." Very light browning on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, scattered small/tiny scuffs, very light soiling, light browning - mainly on spine and flap-folds.

277 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps, colour plates. "David Wingfield joined the Royal Navy in 1806 at the age of fourteen. His service took him to the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. Captured, he was a POW in the United States for nine months. Following his release, Wingfield had some intriguing adventures on the Upper Great Lakes before returning to England. Once home, he used his handwritten notes, kept during his time in North America, as the basis for an account of his experiences there. This, the only account of the War of 1812 as seen through the eyes of a young seaman, provides a fascinating snapshot of people and places, and of a time that represents a turning point in the history of the Great Lakes region. Also included is a Wingfield genealogical description that spans the modern world." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - one very soft small corner crease.

THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813., Berton, Pierre.
5 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 Limited First Edition, Specially Bound. Near Fine Tom McNeely, endpapers.
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Blue (faux?) leather spine with gilt lettering & decoration, gray boards with blue decoration on front board. "This first edition copy - is one of a limited number (unspecified) which have been specially bound and slipcased" from the copyright page. " To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Tiny area of glue residue at the edge of the rear board leather. Slipcase has a tiny edge scuff on rear panel, a few very small minor soiling marks on front panel.

LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783., Bowler, R. Arthur.
8 Bowler, R. Arthur. LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783.
Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, (1975).
290 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....draws on the remarkably complete records of the British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrackmaster generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war." 389 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings. "There have been guidebooks to military sites before, but no other book has covered the War of 1812 in its entirety. This well-illustrated updated edition covers more than 400 historic sites of the War of 1812, both well-known and obscure, in both Canada and the United States. The author has used old pen-and-ink drawings from the last two centuries to give a 'then and now' feel to the book. Besides giving readers a detailed history of the events that occurred at the sites, (he) describes what they have to offer visitors today, be it a historical plaque, historic house, or major interpretive centre. This book is a handy tool for both travellers and historians. It remains the only book on the market offering a comprehensive guide to nearly all of the sites in the last war between the United States and Canada." THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
11 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint foxing marks on free endpapers, light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxing marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny closed tears at bottom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps.

McGraw-Hill, New York, 1978.
231 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070169870 Map. "Perry fought perhaps the most perfect single battle in American naval history. More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." From this point on, our policies have been moulded by tactical alliances - between the English-speaking and French-speaking peoples of Canada, and between the great powers which dominated world politics no less in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries than they do today. (Strips) back the mythologies that now surround the key events in our half-remembered past, showing how fragile was Britain's initial rule of Canada, what really was a stake in the War of 1812, why we became embroiled in the Boer War, and just who exactly refused to rush to Britain's defence during the First World War. 19 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.
