1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

2 Barris, Ted. RODEO COWBOYS: THE LAST HEROES.
Edmonton, Alberta Executive Sport Publications 1981 0919035094 / 9780919035096 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good Photography by Robert Semeniuk.
144 pp, oblong (8 9/16" H x 10 1/16" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Rodeo is perhaps the world's greatest test of physical endurance and raw heroism. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge wrinkling - crease at bottom edge of rear flap.

"For more than a generation 'The Pink 'Un', as 'The Sporting Times' was familiarly known, occupied a position unique in the journalistic world - a position which no paper to-day has achieved. It was more than a mere journal for the sportsman and man about town; it established itself as a social centre of a highly specialized nature, and its readers constituted a species of home and overseas club, whose bond of fellowship was good humour and good sportsmanship." CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE., Cotterell, Arthur.
8 Cotterell, Arthur. CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE.
London Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 First Edition Fine Near Fine
344 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in West Asia and Egypt, then in India and China, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. In 1274 B.C. at Kadesh in present-day Syria - where the untried pharoah Ramesses II was nearly defeated by the Hittites - some 5,000 chariots were deployed in battle. Its use as a war machine is grapically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's Illiad tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 325 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C., on a Kent beach, Julius Caesar was met by British chariots. This unique book traces the rise and fall of the chariot right across the Old World, from Britain to Korea." Includes a chapter titled 'Survivals, Ritual and Racing'. Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing on spine.

FUNDAMENTALS OF RIDING: LEARNING THE ESSENTIAL SKILLS., Edwards, Elwyn Hartley and Thomas, Sian.
11 Edwards, Elwyn Hartley and Thomas, Sian. FUNDAMENTALS OF RIDING: LEARNING THE ESSENTIAL SKILLS.
Swan Hill, Shrewsbury, 1998, first edition.
160 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), soft cover with self-flaps. ISBN 1853108529 "This book is written for the amateur one-horse owner to assist in mastering the basic skills which should lead to effective and enjoyable riding for both members of the p artnership. The improved level of performance may allow the pair to compete creditably in a variety of events at, or perhaps beyond, a good local level. The book provides the indispensable guidelines; it fills the inevitable gaps and helps t o c l a r ify and fix the details of technique. Very importantly, it enlarges on the theory that underpins the rational movements and practice of correct and successful riding and so contributes to a wider, deeper understanding of the whole. Th e bo o k is c op iously illustrated in colour and the horses have been selected to demonstrate the schooling movements and exercises that are typical of those that would be within reach of the amateur rider who aspires to take part in club-level co mp eti ti on at a goo d medium standard." 59 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). 12 color plates, 12 full-page b&w pencil sketches, plus additional pencil sketches throughout. "In offering these sketches to the public I am seeking to fill a somewhat inexplicable gap which seems to have been left open by sporting artists past and present. Pictorial representations of sport usually in the past ran on well worn lines - to most people their animals are more than the acquaintances of the hunting field, and individuals with characters of their own, of interest at all times and seasons. To these true lovers I offer these little sketches in stable and kennel." Tiny light brown mark on page 27, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny slight bump at bottom corners of boards, light edge wear. Dust jacket is price clipped, has large chip and tears on rear panel - some archivally taped, several other chips and tears - some with creases, moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel - light rubbing/soiling elsewhere, moderate edge wear/wrinkling, two light watermarks on spine, now protected in mylar sleeve.
