THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
4 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "In all the world, there's no place like Halloweenland and Jack Skellington is Halloween's most important figure. It's Jack who devises Halloween's most macabre tricks and frights, and he's done it year after year with delight. But this year, something isn't quite right: Jack has grown bored with the usual Halloween pranks, and the joy of seeing shock and horror on people's faces has faded. One night, while out for a walk in the woods, Jack stumbles upon something he's never seen before: a strange door carved into a tree. Stepping through the door, Jack stumbles into a world unlike any he's ever known. He finds himself in a bright, cheerful, colorful place called Christmas Town. Immediately captivated by all the Christmas sights - shining tinsel, sparkling lights, gaily wrapped presents, and sweet confections - Jack knows that he must somehow find a way to become part of it all. And Santa Claus himself provides the key as Jack decides to bring Christmas to Halloween - with Jack starring in Santa's role!" Minor rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing on rear panel, tiny dent on rear hinge.
