212 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Inscribed by author on free front endpaper: "For / D____ R______ C___ / to start his library / With Best Wishes / Alta Halverson Seymour". The date "October 15, 1945 (?)" has also been written in the same ink at the top right corner of the ffep. B&w illustrated title page. This story of Tildy Gale and her family, as they journey by wagon and oxcart from Ohio to a tiny new settlement in the wilds of Wisconsin, is "full full of adventure - fire, quicksand pits, and marauding Indians." Once settled in their new log cabin, they plunge into all the duties of pioneer life and experience many ups and downs with their neighbors. The author has "drawn upon the annals and experiences of her own family. Diaries, journals, and family traditions supplied the warm, human material for (this book) and careful research provides authenticity of detail." Minor edgewear to boards, minor dust staining to textblock edges, very light foxing to rear endpapers. Dust jacket has two small chips at top of spine with creasing and closed tears, larger 1/2" piece missing from bottom of spine, tears and chips at edges and corners, light/moderate soiling and foxing at top edge of flaps - now protected in mylar sleeve.
