195 pp, 8vo (812" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(The) first Battle of Ypres (1914) is sometimes considered to have ended as a costly stalemate, but, in fact, the British Army's act of suicide in this battle resulted in victory; the Germans, in failing a breakthrough to Calais, lost forever any prospects of the outright victory they had expected to win in France. Brigadier Farrar-Hockely's skillful account of this decisive encounter, which includes a brilliant use of contemporary sources, not least among them the dramatic diaries of British soldiers, caused the 'Oxford Times' to comment: 'his book is not only a fine piece of military history; it is as exciting as a thriller'." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book is slightly cocked, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, some small areas of slight discoloration on boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped; has several edge tears; wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds; light browning to spine, top edge, spine and flap-folds; small area of surface paper loss on front panel; protected in a mylar sleeve.
