MYTH, MAGIC, AND MYSTERY: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION., Hearn, Michael Patrick / Clark, Trinkett / Clark, H. Nichols B.
81 Hearn, Michael Patrick / Clark, Trinkett / Clark, H. Nichols B. MYTH, MAGIC, AND MYSTERY: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION.
Boulder, Colorado Roberts Rinehart Publishers in cooperation with The Chrysler Museum of Art 1996 1570980799 / 9781570980794 Soft Cover Very Good
242 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "A stunning achievement, 'Myth, Magic, and Mystery' brings together the work of nearly every prominent children's book illustrator of the twentieth century. Developed for a nationwide, touring exhibition beginning at The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia in June 1996, this book stands alone as a portable encyclopedia of the 'masters' of the genre. Included here are the works of such popular illustrators as N.C. Wyeth, Chris Van Allsburg, Maurice Sendak, Dr. Seuss, Edward Gorey, Tomi Ungerer, and others; a special feature of the book is a complete 'alphabet' created from a selection of the classic ABC books by the likes of Richard Scarry and 'Curious George' creator H.A. Rey. (This) will be a volume to be treasured alongside the classics themselves, a book to be sought after for moments of quiet contemplation or recollections of sheer joy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear, light rubbing on covers, tiny dent on fore-edge of text block, tiny stain on bottom of text block.

THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55., Hibbert, Christopher.
83 Hibbert, Christopher. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55.
Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.

O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE., Higley, Dahn D.
84 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

THE BOEING 247: THE FIRST MODERN COMMERCIAL AIRPLANE. THE FLYING CLASSICS SERIES., Holden, Henry M.
85 Holden, Henry M. THE BOEING 247: THE FIRST MODERN COMMERCIAL AIRPLANE. THE FLYING CLASSICS SERIES.
TAB / McGraw-Hill, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, 1991, first edition.
168 pp, 9 3/16" H, soft cover. ISBN 0830635939 B&w photographs, drawings. "The introduction of the Boeing 247 in 1933 is widely regarded as the beginning of modern air transport. With an all-metal, stressed-skin design and a cruising speed of 17 0 miles an hour, the 247 marked the end of the slower, flimsy wood-and-dope frame biplanes used by the military and mail service. Though quickly overshadowed by its competitors, the 247 proved to the American public that commercial air travel c o u l d be both safe and efficient. In fact, this innovative airplane determined the direction of aircraft design for nearly the next two decades. (This books) traces the evolution of the 247, describing the technological and social circumstan c es d ur in g and after World War I that led to its development. You'll find fascinating descriptions of William Boeing's struggle to implement his unique designs, the public's reception of the 247, the aircraft's commercial and military uses, an d the 24 7's ul ti mate impact on aviation." 86 Holdstock, Robert. Cover art by Christopher Zacharow. MYTHAGO WOOD.
Arbor House, New York, (1984), book club edition.
214 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "On the edge of the (ancient British) forest the Huxley family lives. In the 1930s, George Huxley discovered some of the mysteries of the wood and, until his death in 1946, was obsessed with its exploration. Now, his son, Christian, lives again in the house by the wood and has discovered his father's notes. His brother, Steven, has disappeared into the wood, taking up the father's quest, and Chris is caught up gradually in the mystery. For a strange disjunction with reality appears in and around the wood invading the Huxley home. Here in this ancient place are preserved in living actuality the mythic personages of the human racial unconscious, who inhabit the wood. One who approaches the wood enters another world, the most primitive and powerful existence that humanity can imagine. And Chris must follow the others, including the beautiful huntress Mythago, on a journey to the far heart ot the wood, where the most ancient and perilous monsters still live. And rule..." 781 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w map. "Under the ruthless leadership of Henbane of Whern, the grikes have taken over moledom and soon, under Lucerne, her son by Tryfan, their ascendancy is to be consol-idated and the last followers of the Stone rooted out and killed. Duncton Wood has been sealed off and made a colony for aging and diseased mole outcasts whose sterile feuding and self-hatred the grikes believe will destroy forever the legendary system's spiritual power. Yet it is here, in the shadow of hopelessness and death, that the Stone Mole has been born. His name is Beechen, and the aging Tryfan is entrusted with preparing him for his great task of showing all moles how the Stone's Silence may finally be known. As young Beechen sets forth from Duncton Wood, he finds that all the dark forces of the evil Word have been unleashed against him - and that he will need the courage and faith of other moles, young and old - the much-loved Mayweed, intelligent Sleekit, strong Alder, nervous Bailey and grubby Holm - if hope is to survive." AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES., Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve.
89 Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve. AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES.
Ottawa University of Ottawa Pres 1989 0776602772 / 9780776602776 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, repro-ductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.

The text, written by authoritative anthropologists and art historians, traces Filipino style from its pre-Hispanic origins among the tribal and the natural; through the cosmopolitan influences of Spain, China and the Americas; and explores the most modern and varied examples of Filipino architecture today. The final chapter brings readers into the traditional 'ilustrado' homes of the past by illustrating the refinements of Filipino furniture.
