THE WILLIAM COMPANION., Cadogan, Mary and Schutte, David. With contributions from Kenneth C. Waller. (Richmal Crompton.)
81 Cadogan, Mary and Schutte, David. With contributions from Kenneth C. Waller. (Richmal Crompton.) THE WILLIAM COMPANION.
London PAPERMAC / Macmillan 1990 033356524X / 9780333565247 Soft Cover Very Good
239 pp, 9 3/16" H. B&w photographs, drawings. "Richmal Crompton created William Brown just over seventy years ago as a pot-boiler, but his instant and enduring success kept her writing about him for five decades. His name is now part of the language, synonymous with robust and riotous boyhood. Profusely illustrated with the drawings of Thomas Henry, who portrayed William so vividly in all his vicissitudes, this companion provides an A-Z of exactly who's who and what's what in the splendidly witty saga." Contents: Acknowledgements; List of Plates; Sources of Illustrations; A Note on References; Introduction: The World of William; The William Companion; Appendix 1: The William Books; Appendix 2: The William Stories in Date Order of Magazine Appearance; Appendix 3: Characters Not Listed Individually in the A-Z Section; Appendix 4: Articles 'By William' (by Richmal Crompton). Interior - light browning to edges of first and last pages, soft crease at top corner of first page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - two small dents to bottom of textblock.

Ottawa Canadian Arctic Resources Committee 1981 0919996205 / 9780919996205 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
176 pp, 11 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs showing the caribou and their environment through the seasons, colour maps. "(T)o most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth. The northern wilderness is barren only to those lacking in perception and imagination. But if we should let the great herds vanish from the barren-lands, they will indeed become what the name implies, and we will have lost a part of the majesty and mystery of life." Dust jacket has two small edge tears archivally taped, light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Toronto Dundurn 2010 1554886988 / 9781554886982 4th Edition, Revised. Soft Cover Near Fine
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." 84 Campbell, Duncan C. GLOBAL MISSION: THE STORY OF ALCAN. VOLUME I: TO 1950.
Ontario Publishing 1985 0919354068 / 9780919354067 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Inscribed By Author
438 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "Harold H. Peacock: / With warm regards and appreciation / for a long friendship / Duncan C. Campbell / April 1985." B&w photographs. "In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." 206 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "New Brunswick's enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province's major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support, sustaining them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, includ-ing passenger lists and newspaper shipping reports, (this book) traces the progress of Scottish colon- ization and its ramifications for the province's early development. Who were these Scots? What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, (the author) offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy they left behind. It retains a close fidelity to known facts ab out the life of one of the finest generals the world has ever known, but it reads like an historical novel....This book recreates the amazing life and times of this military genius, charismatic leader, astute manager of resources, efficien t p u b l i c a dministrator, and great champion of democracy. Most of what we know about Hannibal was written by his enemies over 2,000 years ago. Their writings show a grudging admiration for the brilliant Hannibal, but they are written from t he Ro ma n pe rs pe c ti ve, with the prejudices of his bitter enemies. 'Hannibal's Lieutenant' interprets the fascinating facts and situations as Hannibal and his supporters would have seen them, with their own prejudices. Once war was declared by h is gov er nme nt, Ha nn iba l became a victim of political gridlock and inaction by politicians of the Carthaginian government in Africa. Political enemies in Carthage, more than the Roman soldiers in Italy, were responsible for his failure t o d ef eat Rom e.. ..Ha nnib al c ome s al ive as the story follows his life: from his early years to commanding general of Carthaginian forces in Spain at age 25; from climbing the hazardous Alps with his army and elephants to invade Italy at age 26 t o f ight ing R oman s in Italy for 16 y ears with no major defeats; through public adminstrator in Carthage for seven years after the war, where he reformed the government by eliminating graft and corruption and changed it from rule by a privi leged few to t he mos t dem ocrat ic gov ernme nt in the Hellenistic world; from military consultant of the king of Syria in Ephesus where he accompanied the king during Syria's invasion of Greece and later led a fleet of warships in a sea battle to hi s ref uge on the is land o f Cret e; thro ugh hi s stin t as consultant to the king of Bithynia after fleeing Crete; and finally to his suicide at age 64 in 183 B.C." Leo Cooper, Barnsley, 2001, first edition.
252 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850528240 B&w plates, maps. "One hundred years ago, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, along with many other British regiments, were fighting a desperate campaign many thousands of mi les from their native land. The Second Boer War tested the resolve and resources of what was then the mightiest Empire in the world. A succession of reverses raised the real spectre of defeat at the hands of the Boers; an unthinkable humi l i a t i o n . The depth of public interest and concern felt at the time is reflected in continual fascination in this conflict. Thus Martin Cassidy's careful editing of the graphic diaries of three members of the Regiment's 1st Battalion (two o ff ic er s an d on e p rivate soldier) is to be greatly welcomed. Through the differing angles of these fine accounts we witness not just the drama of battle but the harsh conditions that the British troops had to endure. To read first-hand record s o f t he ex tra or din ar y deeds such as those performed at Inniskilling Hill and the Relief of Ladysmith is a privilege that will mean much to those closely associated with the Regiment and to all with an interest in military history." 93 Chambers, W. CHAMBERS'S HISTORICAL AND MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS, EMBRACING HISTORY, SCIENCE, LITERATURE, ARTS, &C. (CHAMBER'S).
William and Robert Chambers, London, 1866.
In two sections: Historical - 204 pp; Miscellaneous - 209 pp., small 8vo, hard cover - no dust jacket. Small b&w illus within text. "The present work is designed to fulfil an important purpose in EDUCATION - that of bringing clearly into view the leading facts which are supposed to be gained through a long course of instruction. Without proposing to supersede the elementary books usually employed, it offers a certain test of what is presumed to have been previously learned. With such a work in their hands, Schoolmasters, Tutors, Governesses, or Parents, may at once satisfy themselves as to the degree of knowledge on a variety of subjects attained by the young persons under their charge, and for whose intellectual culture they feel a special interest. At the same time - in this age of Competitive Examination - the work offers to candidates for Official Appointments the means of readily and perspicuously calling to remembrance answers to such questions in History, Science, Art, Literature, and General Knowledge, as are likely to be asked of them; thereby, perhaps, saving the reperusal of a multiplicity of books which they would otherwise have to consult and patiently study. As regards the Answers to the Questions, every effort has been made to render them brief and of easy acquisition, in regular consecutive order according to subjects; while the facts they present, based on the most recent authorities, are just those which, from their interest and importance, are expected to be less or more borne on the mind of every 'well-informed person' of either sex." Interior - browning to pages/endpapers, some light 'thumbing' to margins, light brown stain at bottom corner of preliminaries - overall sound with no writing/names, etc. Exterior - light/moderate edge wear/rubbing, light corner wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, dust staining to text block edges, light scuffing to spine. 94 Chapman, Eddie. Foreword by Frank Owen. THE REAL EDDIE CHAPMAN STORY.
London Tandem Mass Market Paperback Good
253 pp, 7 1/8" H. c1966. In 1940, safecracker Eddie Chapman offered his services to the German High Command as a spy. His first mission was to blow up the de Havilland works in Hatfield. "What is now revealed for the first time is that Chapman had immediately upon landing made contact with senior officials of the Air Ministry who listened with stunned silence to his story. Shortly after, a German reconnaissance plane which was allowed over to photograph the results of his mssion, reported that the buildings were in ruins and smoke was still rising. At Hatfield, the camouflage experts quietly congratulated themselves on having made it look as though an explosives expert had been at work! Chapman was working for his own country at the risk of his life. Soon after he was shipped back to Germany through Lisbon, where Hitler, grateful for the blow struck against England, awarded him the Iron Cross. For two years, Chapman, behaving like a hero of the Third Reich, spied on the Germans and constantly fed information back to British Intelligence, before being parachuted in for a second time to report on the range of the V-bombs. His true story makes incredible reading." Rear cover advertises the movie "Triple Cross", starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie Chapman and Yul Brynner as Colonel von Grunen. Interior - very light browning to pages, tiny bump to top corner of pages 1 to 75, tiny crease at top vorner of page leaf 167/168, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. "The Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century opened a wide-ranging debate on the nature of authority within the Christian Church, giving birth to a vigorous radical dissent movement and the emergence of Unitarianism in the United States and Europe. Based on the belief that the only true source of authority is human reason itself, this is a religous community where doubts are encouraged and tenets are refreshingly free from dogma. The guiding principles are simply freedom, reason and tolerance, and the right to question religious doctrine is a valued part of Unitarian practice. (This book) explains: what Unitarians believe; how Unitarianism differs from mainstream Christian denominations; the role of Unitarians in international religious dialogue; what Unitarianism can offer us today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - remainder marks on top/bottom of textblock, light edge wear, spine slightly twisted, slight browning to edges of text block, small light mark on front cover, tiny faint scuff on rear cover.
