HSIN CH'I-CHI., Lo, Irving Yucheng. (Hsin Ch'i-chi)
81 Lo, Irving Yucheng. (Hsin Ch'i-chi) HSIN CH'I-CHI.
Twayne, New York, 1971.
194 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Hsin Ch'i-chi (1140-1207), a prime exponent of that form of Chinese lyrics known as the t'zu, exemplifies many of the traditional characteristics of Chinese poetry. His use of imagery, his allusi veness, his technical virtuosity, marks him as a poet of the first rank. This study seeks to illumine Hsin's life and work through close analyses of forty of his tz'u, presented in new English translations." Previous owner's bookplate on f r e e f r o n t endpaper, previous owner's chop (stamp) on half-title page, minor browning to top of textblock. Dust jacket has light foxing on inside, light edge wear, creases at top/bottom of spine, light browning on flap-folds. Very Good/Ver y Go od -

82 Maling, Arthur. LUCKY DEVIL
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025581 / 9780575025585 First British Edition Very Good Very Good
243 pp, 8"H. "Brock Potter of the New York brokerage firm of Price, Potter and Petacque again faces a baffling problem. It all begins when a harmless old lady is pushed off a subway platform and killed. She happened to have Brock's name and address in her pocket, and Homicide want to know why. Brock can't tell them: he has never heard of her. But when he begins his own enquiries he finds that she was the chief stockholder of some worthless mining stock called Lucky Devil, and that a man from Salt Lake City had been putting pressure on her to sell to him. Brock and his left-hand man Brian Barth, pay a visit to Salt Lake City, and to the derelict mine, and have some very odd adventures with the very odd collection of people associated with Lucky Devil. But why whould anyone want to control of this worthless stock, and want it badly enough to commit murder (a couple of attempts are made on Brock's life too). No, the answer isn't that the old mine contains uranium. In fact, we defy any reader to come up with the solution before Mr Maling reveals it, for it's totally original. The intriguing brokerage background, the technical data, and the speed of an exciting story combine to make the book outstandingly suspenseful reading." Tiny tear at top of spine, small soft bump at bottom of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny tear at top of spine, tiny chip at bottom of front flap-fold.

GERMAN WARPLANES OF WORLD WAR II. COMBAT AIRCRAFT LIBRARY., Mason, Francis K.
83 Mason, Francis K. GERMAN WARPLANES OF WORLD WAR II. COMBAT AIRCRAFT LIBRARY.
New York Crescent Books 1983 0517405075 / 9780517405079 Very Good+ Very Good+
80 pp, 12 7/8" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, cutaways, profiles and diagrams. At the outbreak of World War II, "Germany had the finest (air power) in the world, deployed in optimum formations and available in vast quantities. The German aviation industry surpassed the world in ingenuity and in production technique. The products were classic: Stuka dive-bombers, Messerschmitt fighters, Junkers and Dornier bombers. There were excellent seaplanes, giant trans-ports, observation aircraft and trainers. They were to develop rocket power and jets, and at the time of their defeat they were on the brink of revolutionizing aircraft design. Indeed, many of the post-war jets of America and Russia owed their origins to German wartime designs. This volume surveys the vast armada of German warplanes of World War II and illustrates the major types in brilliant color drawings and photographs, with many technical descriptions and diagrams." Small bump at top of spine. Dust jackat has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

84 McCarthy, Doris. A FOOL IN PARADISE: AN ARTIST'S EARLY LIFE.
Toronto Macfarlane Walter & Ross 1990 092191203X / 9780921912033 First Edition Very Good Very Good
257 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "In 1926, when she was just fifteen years old, Doris McCarthy unexpectedly won a scholarship to art college. Among her mentors were the leading members of the Group of Seven: Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, and Lawren Harris. Their influence changed her life; the girl who thought herself destined to be a writer of books became instead an artist. (This book) describes the coming of age of this spirited young woman who followed an unorthodox path to happiness while struggling to establish herself in the art world of the thirties and forties. Against the backdrop of those eventful decades, she writes of a tumultuous year of study in pre-war London, adjusting to the strictures of a teaching job in the depths of the Depression, breaking loose from the conventional assumptions of the day, and finding love in unexpected places. (The) captivating memoir of her early life illuminates a period now passed, but her story resonates with remarkably timely themes: the desire for independence, the strength of friendships between girls and women, the exhilaration of creative and fulfilling work, and the search for joy and contentment in life." A small bump at top edge of front board, bottom of spine and at one corner. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - light at bottom of spine and at bottom of front flap-fold.

90 Milner, Marc. THE U-BOAT HUNTERS: THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY AND THE OFFENSIVE AGAINST GERMANY'S SUBMARINES.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1994 0802005888 / 9780802005885 First Edition Near Fine Very Good+
326 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(B)egins with a thorough re-evaluation of the RCN's role in the decisive Allied Atlantic victory over the U-boats in 1943. It presents some startling new conclusions about why the Canadians were marginalized in this the greatest of all anti-submarine offensives. Most studies of the Atlantic war end at this point, but 1943 is just the prologue to Milner's new book. Historians have ignored anti-submarine warfare in1944-5 because it was highly technical, undramatic and of no consequence to the outcome of the war itself. But the war against the U-boat was unrelenting. Schnorkels, improved batteries, radar detectors, and complex inshore water conditions made it difficult to find and sink late-war U-boats. By 1944 the Germans were building new, high-speed true submarines, against which the Allies had not effective countermeasures. This book is the story of how the RCN tackled these elusive enemies, how it fought to master the basics of modern anti-submarine warfare, and how its efforts fit into the larger Allied campaign." Minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, light rubbing, light 2" scratch on rear panel.

95 Munson, Kenneth. Illustrated by John W. Wood, with Michael Baber, Norman Dinnage, William Hobson, Alan Holiday, Tony Mitchell, Allen Randall. FIGHTERS: ATTACK AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT 1914-1919. THE POCKET ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF WORLD AIRCRAFT IN COLOUR SERIES.
Blandford, London, 1968, first edition.
183 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Colour plates. "When war broke out in Europe in August 1914 there were no specialised fighters, only a handful of 'high performance scouts' whose 90 m.p.h. was 'dangerously fast', and even these carried no regular armament. By November 1918, two-gun fighters capable of 120 m.p.h. were standard, and individual designs for more specialised duties had made their appearance. The airmen and aircraft of the First World War - the first air war - h a v e a special place in history which has perhaps bcome over-glamourised. Certainly there were outstanding aeroplanes and heroic airmen, but in both the human and technical fields of aeronautical endeavour 1914-1919 was very much a period of t ri al a nd er ror in which, in the words of one great pioneer, 'some of were lucky and some of us weren't'. Such, too, was the expansion of the combatant air forces, once it was realised how decisive a role aircraft were playing in the overall wa r e ffo rt, th a t f or the first time on any scale organised flying training became a necessity, creating a demand for 'school' aeroplanes in ever-increasing numbers. The 80 aircraft in this volume reflect the evolution of such machines throug hou t th e fi rst trul y form ative period of military aviation history. The period 1914-1919 is selected so as to include certain important types designed during the war, but which arrived too late for combat service." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wear, light browning on spine and flap-folds - very light elsewhere. Good+/Good+

180 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. Trilingual text (English / German / French). "Since its foundation in 1839, the Geneva factory (of Patek Philippe) has determined the appearance of each type of watch popular at the time, from pocket watches to table clocks and wrist watches. Countless patents have been developed there in order to substantially improve the reliability and precision of their timepieces. At international auctions, their individual models have always been amongst the most highly prized and sought after by collectors. This volume presents an important private collection with timepieces dating from 1923 to 1981. The exclusive focus of attention is on the most interesting chapter in the history of Patek Philippe's development: the so-called complicated wrist watches whose development was made possible by the firm's winding mechanism, patented in 1861. The various models are classified according to type of watch and date of production, and are accompanied by the essential technical data together with lavish use of illustrations."
