81 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.

TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES., Firth, Edith G.
82 Firth, Edith G. TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942)., Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith.
91 Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith. LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942).
Regina, Saskatchewan University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center 2004 088977157X / 9780889771574 Soft Cover Near Fine
197 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. Aubin Le Cauf on several occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for their graves. John Edwin Gardiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, and most touching, however, is the genuine family affection that pervades these letters."

THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC., Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan.
92 Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan. THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1995, first edition.
312 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297815288 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Why did Captain Smith accelerate in uniquely treacherous weather towards an exceptionally dangerous ice-field of which he had been warned many times? In t he disaster that followed more than 1,500 people died while barely 700 were saved. This book lays bare as no other the full scope of Smith's astonishing accident record and explores his motives - and the pressures on him - anew. W hat caused the hol e near the bow? The notorious iceberg cracked the plates for 300 feet along the ship's side, but the hole looks more like an explosion. Why is the position of the wreck - pinpointed by the latest technology - irreconcilabl e w i t h the Titanic's SOS calls? The authors conclude that the apparently ruthless American disaster hearings covered up the role of the ship's true owner, the arch-capitalist J.Pierpont Morgan; that the apparently dispassionate British enquiry , d om in at ed by an insider-deal ing Attorney-General, whitewashed a complacent government; and that White Star covered up its own gross negligence by bribing key witnesses. And what of the wreck itself? Here the mystery deepens. When Dr Rober t Ba lla rd - w ho first located the Ti tanic in 1895 - explored the wreck a year later he found the bulkhead not shown on any plans. The most diligent searches have since failed to trace the imposing stern nameplate with its embossed letters eight ee n i nche s h igh. T he authors have gone so far as to explore the breathtaking idea that the Titanic was replaced by her sister-ship, the seriously damaged Olympic, in a plot to recover the huge losses she ran up. The results are tantalising." T hree heav y bu mps a t to p of boards at spine, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light water mark at fore-edge of rear board. 93 Gatland, Kenneth W. and Kunesch, Anthony Ma SPACE TRAVEL.
New York Philosophical Library 1953 Second Impression. Hard Cover Good Good J.W. Wood and R.A. Smith.
205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." Light to moderate edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 1" bump/creases at bottom edge of rear board, two tiny corner bumps. Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550021958 B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of the most creative, adventurous, and yet too-often overlooked giants of the Industrial Age - Canada's Sandford Fleming. His influence spanned the North American continent and beyond. As chief engineer of the Intercolonial and Canadian Pacific railways, he shaped and steered the greatest engineering challenge of his day: the laying of the ribbons of railway steel that bound together a fledgling country. He can be credited as well with the telegraph cables that began to criss-cross the globe. Few are aware that it was Fleming who gave us the system of universal time. He also designed the first Canadian adhesive postage stamp, which was issued in 1851. Sandford Fleming's triumphs are all the greater considering the natural and human adversities obstructing every step of his way. Jealousies, back-stabbing, pork-barrel politics, and bureaucratic ineptitude were as intrinsic to mega-projects then as they are now. Fleming's life story constitutes a compelling and universal drama." Previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has corner crease on front flap. Very Good+/Very Good +
