HELLS ANGELS: INTO THE ABYSS. (HELL'S), Lavigne, Yves.
81 Lavigne, Yves. HELLS ANGELS: INTO THE ABYSS. (HELL'S)
Toronto HarperCollins 1996 0002552868 / 9780002552868 First Edition Very Good Very Good
305 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "(S)trips away the glamorous image of the notorious gang and reveals its 'brothers' for what they are: murderers, drug dealers and big businessmen with an eye to expanding their territory. (This) is the incredible story of one man, FBI informant Anthony Tait, who accomplished what law enforcement officials had believed was impossible - on a bet with two Alaska police officers for a steak dinner and a bottle of bourbon, he became the only person ever to infiltrate the Hells Angels organization. After only six years as a Hells Angel, Tait rose up in the ranks to become the right-hand man of Sonny Barger, the famous leader of the Club. By the time the FBI sting operation had reached its conclusion, 42 Hells Angels - including Sonny Barger himself - were jailed on various drug, weapons and murder charges. With the threat of Hells Angels expansion ever-present, and biker wars erupting in cities where the influence of the Hells Angels was once invisible, 'Into the Abyss' is both a chilling true-crime story and a timely warning about the danger in our own backyard." Minor wear on bottom of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, soft creases at top of front flap.

83 Le Naour, Jean-Yves. Translated By Penny Allen. THE LIVING UNKNOWN SOLDIER: A STORY OF GRIEF AND THE GREAT WAR.
New York Metropolitan Books 2004 0805075224 / 9780805075229 First American Edition Near Fine Near Fine
233 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "In February 1918, a derelict soldier was discovered wandering the railway station in Lyon, France. With no memory of his name or his past, no identifying possessions, marks, or documents, the soldier - given the name Anthelme Mangin - was sent to an asylum for the insane. When, after the Great War ended, the authorities placed the soldier's image in advertisements to locate his family, hundreds of 'relatives' claimed him - as their father or son, husband or brother who had failed to return from the front. Marshalling a vast array of original material, from letters and newspaper articles to accounts of battlefield deaths, hospital reports, and police files, (the author) meticulously re-creates the long-forgotten story of the single soldier who came to stand for a lost generation. With humane sympathy and the skill of a novelist, he recounts the twenty-year court battles waged by the families competing to take the amnesiac soldier home. In the process, he portrays not just the fate of one individual but the rank and file's experience in the trenches, as well as an entire nation's inconsolable grief at the loss of more than one million of its men. Dramatic, taut, and powerfully relevant to our own times, this heartrending history depicts the pain and turmoil of a society that, without bodies to bury, is caught between holding on and letting go." Dust jacket has very minor rubbing.

85 Lidegaard, Bo. translated from the Danish by Robert Maass. COUNTRYMEN. THE UNTOLD STORY OF HOW DENMARK'S JEWS ESCAPED THE NAZIS, OF THE COURAGE OF THEIR FELLOW DANES - AND OF THE EXTRAORDINARY ROLE OF THE SS.
Toronto Signal / McClelland & Stewart 2013 0771047126 / 9780771047121 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
396 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(In 1943, anticipating) that the German occupying powers would soon issue the long-feared order to round up the entire population of Jews for deportation to concentration camps, the Danish people stood up in defiance and resisted. The king, politicians, and ordinary civilians were united in their response - these treatened people were not simply Jews but fellow Danes who happened to be Jewish, and no one would help in rounding them up for confinement and deporation. Over fourteen harrowing days, as they were helped, hidden, and protected by ordinary people who spontaneously rushed to save their fellow citizens, an incredible 7,742 out of 8,200 Jewish refugees were smuggled out all along the coast - on ships, schooners, fishing boats, anything that floated - to Sweden. Unfolding on a day-to-day basis, 'Countrymen' brings together accounts written by individuals and officials as events happened, offering a comprehensive overview that underlines occupied Denmark's historical importance to Hitler as a prop for a model Nazi state and revealing the savage conflict among top Nazi brass for control of the country." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

86 Lunenfeld, Marvin. THE COUNCIL OF THE SANTA HERMANDAD: A STUDY OF THE PACIFICATION FORCES OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA.
Coral Gables Univesity of Miami Press 1970 0870241435 / 9780870241437 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good-
134 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The role of the Council was to govern the Holy Brotherhood, the kingdom-wide police force (of Renaissance Spain). The Council guided the colorful Brotherhood in pacifying Castile, and, while so doing, created a royal army for the conquest of Granada, the prototype of the great Spanish infantry that dominated Europe for centuries. The fact that Queen Isabella borrowed the money for Columbus' voyage from the treasury of the Brotherhood is an incidental, but not insignificant contribution to the Brotherhood in history. (The author) brings into question long-established theories concerning the social groups affected by the police and the extent to which the urban patriciate willingly cooperated with the crown in meeting Council demands. He documents reasons for believing that the Holy Brotherhood remained relatively more independent of royal control than had been previously assumed. He also provides a vivid description of the court, cities, and lawless countryside of fifteenth-century Castile." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling along top edge, two tiny closed tears with creases, light rubbing.

THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN WEST; BEING THE REMINISCENCES OF AN EYE-WITNESS., MacBeth, R.G., Rev.
87 MacBeth, R.G., Rev. THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN WEST; BEING THE REMINISCENCES OF AN EYE-WITNESS.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Near Fine Very Good-
230 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "As a boy, R.G. MacBeth witnessed the struggle we now know as the Riel Rebellion. His account begins with the barring to the new Canadian governor of the highway between Fort Garry and the border on October 21, 1869, and ends with the triumphant return of the Winnipeg Light Infantry to Winnipeg in 1885. Written from 'notes made nightly at the camp-fire' while the author took part in the military campaign, the story is dramatic and authentic. However, there is more here than simply sources for the military or political historian. The book brings to life the drama of frontier days. The remarkable men who shaped the West walk again: Ambroise Lepine, Riel's huge lieutenant, 'the only one who manifested anything like manliness after it was over'; Dr. John Shultz, who escaped from the rebels by running six miles on an injured leg through arctic temperatures; Donald A. Smith, the commissioner from Ottawa, 'a man of rare skill and tact'; Riel himself, who 'felt the wine of a new movement in his system'. The heart-breaking struggle of these men and their contemporaries to create a new land is graphically portrayed." Dust jacket has light edge rubbing, small tear (archivally taped) with creases at top of front flap-fold.

EDMONTON TRADER: THE STORY OF JOHN A. McDOUGALL., MacGregor, James G.
89 MacGregor, James G. EDMONTON TRADER: THE STORY OF JOHN A. McDOUGALL.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1963 First Edition Very Good Good-
262 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John A. McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). During his lifetime he saw the Indians signing their lands over to the Crown; watched the hamlet of Edmonton by-passed by the railroad and later cut off for weeks by hostile Indians during the second Riel Rebellion. He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed. (This book) throws new light on an important section of Canadian history and illustrates the magnitude of the changes that have taken place in the West in the past hundred years." Its heroes are to be found in the RCMP, city police forces, the Canadian military, and among all the rescue workers and specialists of the Canadian Coast Guard - volunteers, too, risk injury and even death to help others. Sidebars highlight the equipment search and rescue teams use, how search dogs are trained, how long-line rescues work, how navy divers are making a difference in the deserts of Afghanistan, and the meaning of terms such as emergency position-indicating radio beacons, Maydays, datum lines, and much more." 99 McLean, Allan Campbell. RIBBON OF FIRE.
London Collins 1962 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good -
189 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "The day that Alasdair was dragged off by the police to the factor's house, accused of writing an anonymous letter threatening murder to the laird, was the day of Lachlann Ban's return from prison. For the year is 1884 and the crofters in the small township of Skye are being oppressed to the limit of their endurance by the laird and his harsh factor. Already they have fought back by pulling down the laird's fine new wall; and now with Lachlann Ban again at their head are determined to resist to the last the laird and his crippling reforms. Lachlann Ban was a bold leader and a fiery one. Who but he would have fought a pitched hand battle with the factor? Who but he would have dared to rescue a man from prison in Portree and then convey him safely in another man's coffin? Who but he would have gathered an army of men to march to the laird, their torches a ribbon of fire through the hills? Allan Campbell McLean's new novel for older boys and girls is filled with the conflicts and struggle of the times: the fierce antagonism between Lachlann Bann and the factor; the mounting tension of the men hidden on the hillside waiting to roll boulders on the heads of the soldiers in the pass below; the treachery of those who betrayed them. And the characters in the story - Alasdair himself; Lachlann Ban; Alasdair's father; his embittered mother; the crippled tailor; the laird and his dark-haired daughter who proves a real ally - are memorably drawn." 100 Mellor, John. THE COMPANY STORE: JAMES BRYSON McLACHLAN AND THE CAPE BRETON COAL MINERS, 1900-1925.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1983 0385128126 / 9780385128124 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
362 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The devastating story of Cape Breton's miners and the strikes they launched against the companies that owned their homes, their possessions, and their churches. Canadians - and the rest of the world - will be shocked by accounts of police brutality and murder, mass demonstrations, rebellion, scandalous politicking, and most of all, desperate poverty and hunger. The miners had always been paid starvation wages by companies that held total monopolies of such towns as Glace Bay. The first time they launched a strike in 1905, soldiers were brought in and machine guns and barbed wire were set up around the mining communities. Credit was cut off from company stores (the only stores). Miners were evicted from company-owned houses (the only houses) in the middle of winter. The death toll was enormous. Strikes over the next fifteen years simply led to continued harrassment and eviction. At one time, the company was permitted, by government order, to employ hundreds of special police, mounted on horseback and supplied with guns and heavy sticks, to batter miners into submission. James Bryson McLachlan was the hero of the Cape Bretoners when he took up their cause and organized strikers and entered into negotiations with the companies.
