London Brown 1999 1897884532 / 9781897884539 Near Fine Very Good+
176 pp, 12" H. "The destructive power of warships has increased dramatically since the end of World War II. The big gun has been superseded by the carrier-launched aircraft armed with bombs and torpedoes. (This book) offers a comprehensive overview of the dominant naval groups; organised by ship type, it features fast attack craft, naval fighters, ballistic missile submarines, supercarriers, amphibious assault craft, light carriers and battleships. For each group is given a weapons and ship inventory as well as full details of deployment, combat techniques and tactics used. The descriptions are brought to life with first-hand accounts from officers who have served on each type of craft. (It) is packed with information presented in the most accessible way: there are specifications tables on specific craft, diagrams showing weapon deployment, full-colour artworks displaying the features of particular vessels and gatefold pages providing special large-format illustrations of seven ships." Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling, one tiny edge tear with wrinkle at top of spine, four tiny dints on front panel.

London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

87 Borovik, Artyom. THE HIDDEN WAR: A RUSSIAN JOURNALIST'S ACCOUNT OF THE SOVIET WAR IN AFGHANISTAN.
New York Grove 1990 080213775X / 9780802137753 6th Printing Soft Cover Near Fine
288 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "Until his death in 2000, Artyom Borovik was considered one of the preeminent journalists in Russia. With (this book) he provided the world its first glimpse inside the Soviet military machine, capturing the soldiers' terror, helplessness, and despair at waging war in a foreign land against an unseen enemy for unclear purposes. When first published, Borovik's groundbreaking revelations exposed the weaknesses beneath the Soviet Union's aura of military might, creating an enormous controversy both in Russia and around the world. A vital and fascinating portrait of the Soviet empire at the twilight of its power, this is a book that still resonates today."

Toronto Dundurn 2006 1550026283 / 9781550026283 First Edition Near Fine
205 pp, 9" H. "If humanity has learned anything from the horrors of the past century, it is that our one hope is democracy. The goals of Canada's actions at home and abroad should be the preservation of democracy. This is the lens through which our policies should be discerned, dissected and amended. (The author) argues that Canada has pursued an ethically and categorically incorrect war against terror. We have been needlessly dovish abroad and excessively hawkish at home. In order to use military force abroad, the government fussed over the need for United Nations approval. At home, however, there are no such restraints; without even asking a court, the government may effectively deprive certain people of the right to make a living. As (he) summarizes: 'Internationally, key fallacies stem from an undue respect for a rule of law that does not exist. Domestically, key fallacies stem from an undue neglect of a rule of law that does exist." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.), Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P.
89 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." 224 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0792450876 Profusely illustrated with color and b&w photographs, maps. "....a detailed chronological account of this 'Thirty Years War' of the twentieth century. It traces the history of t he war from its earliest nineteenth-century origins to its gloomy aftermath in the 1980s. In so doing, it not only illuminates the interplay of policies, personalities, motives and strategies that shaped the war, but also the web of diplo m a t i c , p o l itical, social and ethical conflicts to which it gave rise and which, in the end, had such an important bearing on its outcome. It reveals, too, the many apparent paradoxes that political and military historians will ponder for y ea rs t o co me : h ow , for example, high-technology warfare foundered in conditions of primitive guerrilla, or how the United States lost the war psychologically at the very moment of the U.S. forces' greatest military success. Carefully resear che d, min ut ely de ta ile d, il lustrated with hundreds of historical photographs, many in color, and with maps by the celebrated miltitary cartographer Richard Natkiel, (this) is both a fascinating recapitulation of the war, exactly as the world exp eri ence d i t, a nd a n i mpor tan t w ork of reference for laymen and scholars alike." HURRICANE AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave.

Shepperton Ian Allan 1974 0711005648 / 9780711005648 First Edition Very Good- Very Good Dust jacket art by Rex Flood.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later service in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, first-hand impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This amalgam of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sicily and Greece and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross, and pictorial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." Multiple creases at bottom of pages 27 thru 40. very small crease/bump at top corner of pages 83 thru 102, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, small shallow bump and a tiny scuff at top edge of rear board. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1968.
251 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps. "The attempts by the Western powers to intervene in Russia after the Bolshevik coup d'etat of 1917, and the abortive attempt of the Red Army to destroy Poland, are subjects which have be en badly neglected by historians. John Bradley has consulted French and British archives for the first time, and his book provides a wealth of completely new material on the subject. As a result of this new research many hitherto accepte d i d e a s o f the intervention are challenged and a clearer perspective is given to this period of history. The most obscure phase of the intervention, November 1917 to August 1918, is thoroughly dealt with, and the place of Japan and the Czec ho s lo va k Co rp s i n the military strategy of the Allies is examined. The book also deals with the South, the Far East and the Polish campaigns, the 'last march of the Entente' against Soviet Russia." Minor edge wear to boards.
