"....chronicles the story of a majestic four-engined bomber of the propeller era flying perilous co mbat missions against a sleek, nimble aeroplane of the jet age, the Soviet MiG-15. A 'very heavy' bomber and a sky giant during World War 2 (at that time the B29 was the world's most advanced combat aircraft), it had been reclassified as a ' m e d i u m ' bomber by the time North Korea attacked its sourthern neighbour in 1950. Many of its crew members had fought their war and settled down to raise families and begin careers - only to be recalled to fight another war on a distant As i an p en in su la . A n irreverent bunch, they painted their B-29s in elaborate colour schemes. Historians have long been intrigued by the unique war they fought, pitting their big and vulnerable bomber against a veritable fleet of MiG-15s. Cra mm ed ful l o f f irs t-h an d a ccounts, profile artwork and action photographs, this volume graphically details the war fought by the B-29 crews in the deadly skies over North Korea, both during daylight and hours of darkness." LOUISBOURG: KEY TO A CONTINENT., Downey, Fairfax.

Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., 1965.
255 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w plates, maps, drawings. "(The author provides atmosphere and reality to this history) by focusing attention upon the people and the everyday happenings at the Fortress of Louisbourg and gives a colorful re-creation of land and sea battles. Downey describes this vital bastion as 'The strongest fortress in America, a walled city without a peer in the New World'. Louisbourg was guardian of the approaches to the S t . L awrence River, gateway to the heart of French Canada, and the key to a continent. In North America, the grasp of France was beginning to loosen. Its territories were shrinking, due to England's relentless drive. But total possession was im po ss i bl e so long as the great fortress Louisbourg stood fast. Then in 1744, war was declared between France and England and General William Pepperrell and American Colonial troops with the English navy laid siege to Louisbourg which fell in 174 5. En gl and 's possession lasted only three years, as Louisbourg was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix la-Chapelle. The Seven Years War brough still another siege (1758) by the British who defeated the French. When the struggle be t ween th e tw o g reat powers ended, the fort was demolished and its people dispersed." THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690., Ellis, Peter Berresford.
93 Ellis, Peter Berresford. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1976, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. "In the year 1690 Ireland was the pivot of the European crisis. Louis XIV had sent over the deposed king James II with French money, troops and generals in order to secure Irelan d and eventually England as allies. William III, together with other members of the League of Augsburg, sought to prevent a Jacobite restoration in England and the consequent domination of Europe by France. On 1 July 1690, the decisive da y o f t h e battle of the Boyne, the presence of troops from the continent on both sides of the river emphasized the international issues at stake. But the battle was fought for other reasons which are still remembered today. The Cromwellian la nd o wn er s a nd t h e English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster wanted to defend their property and power; the Old English Catholics and the native Irish fought to regain their confiscated lands and to drive out the alien English conquerors. H ow fa r, in fa ct, di d W il liam and James represent these respective interests and what happened after such bitter fighting? Peter Berresford Ellis describes the movements of both armies prior to the battle and the scene of the battlefield itsel f. Wi th his ch arac teri stic im partiality he assesses the personalities and strategy of the various leaders - the Earl of Tyrconnell, the young Duke of Berwick and Patrick Sarsfield on the Jacobite side and the old Duke of Shomberg, the Count of Solm s-B raun fels and Gusta vus H amil ton on the Williamite side. For it was the foresight, skills or mistakes of such men which were to determine the outcome of the battle. Vivid eye-witness accounts of soldiers captured in both camps add f eel ing t o th is st ory o f hat red, h ope an d cou rage which captured the imagination of the generations to come. But the author does not merely ascertain the military significance of William's victory. He outlines the consequences of Williamit e ru le for both Catho lics a nd Pro testant s alike , in b oth Ulster and the South, and in so doing destroys - in surprising ways - some of the myths surrounding the battle of the Boyne." Slight cigarette odor, very light browning to pages, lig ht br ownign to for e-edge of text block, small bu mp at bo ttom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wrinkling and edge browning, light rubbing, light to moderate browning on rear panel, slight delamination at top ed ge of rear pa nel. 195 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(The) first Battle of Ypres (1914) is sometimes considered to have ended as a costly stalemate, but, in fact, the British Army's act of suicide in this battle resulted in victory; the Germans, in failing a breakthrough to Calais, lost forever any prospects of the outright victory they had expected to win in France. Brigadier Farrar-Hockely's skillful account of this decisive encounter, which includes a brilliant use of contemporary sources, not least among them the dramatic diaries of British soldiers, caused the 'Oxford Times' to comment: 'his book is not only a fine piece of military history; it is as exciting as a thriller'."
