168 pp, 10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w drawings. "Pledging allegiance to (H.M.S.) Basset's motto, Credendo Vides - Seing Believing, One Sees - (nine year old) Cassandra, her sceptical older sister, Miranda, and their father, Professor Algernon Aisling, set out in search of the ancient legends. From the flickering flight of faeries to the mermaids' siren songs, a labyrinth-bound Minotaur to a fire-breathing dragon, the Aisling family witnesses firsthand the wonder of mythological worlds. 82 Clark, Andrew. (Harold Pringle.) A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Alfred A. Knopf, (Toronto, 2002), first edition.
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 067697354X "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war..." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Near Fine/Near Fine

83 Clay, Catrine. KING, KAISER, TSAR: THREE ROYAL COUSINS WHO LED THE WORLD TO WAR.
London John Murray 2007 0719565375 / 9780719565373 Soft Cover Very Good
416 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "The King, the Kaiser and the Tsar - George V, Wilhelm II and Nicholas II - were close cousins who knew each other as Georgie, Willy and Nicky. Between them they ruled half the world. Their lives had overlapped since childhood, in palaces of unimaginable opulence, surrounded by flattery and political intrigue. They saw themselves as a trade union of kings, standing firm against Socialism, Republicanism and revolution. But behind the friendliness lurked quarrels and, as the First World War loomed, they turned on each other. Ultimately, when Nicholas II begged for exile in the midst of Russia's revolution, his cousins denied him. This compelling tale of privilege, power and political machination explores whether their blunders caused the lead-up to war and the end of autocratic monarchy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is very slightly cocked, spine has light creases and is slightly concave.

90 Cook, Glen. DEADLY QUICKSILVER LIES. GARRETT P.I. SERIES.
New York ROC 1994 0451453050 / 9780451453051 Mass Market Paperback Very Good
347 pp, 6 7/8" H. "When 'Royalty' paid the tab, price wasn't the issue, survival was. And Garrett wasn't sure it was worth his life to take Maggie Jean on as his client. Not in a kingdom where the biggest con artists weren't human, magic could beat any weapon, and the local killers were built like tanks. Still, damsels in distress were Garrett's weakness, especially when they had all the right equipment in all the right places. And it seemed like a simple missing person's case: a vanished teenage daughter, a distraught mother trying to track her down. But when the mother used to be the mistress of the now defunct king, and when a guy they called the Rainmaker (a character so well connected even Garrett's friends didn't want to rat on him) was far too interested in Maggie and ready to see Garrett permanently removed from the case, he knew he'd have to call in some big favors just to keep his head on his shoulders, let alone to find a kid who probably didn't want to be found." 270 pages, 6 13/16" H. "Blood-soaked blades had been taking their toll among the luscious lovelies in Garrett's home city of TunFaire. And though Garrett could be as civic-minded as the next guy - unless the next guy was Captain Block of the Watch - the private eye wasn't sure he really wanted to take on a serial killer psycho who did too good a carving job and never left any of the blood behind. Still, having Block pay him for his services with lots of ill-gotten government funds, and having his own partner, the Dead Man, strenuously urge him to take the case, proved an irresistible combination for Garrett. And so the top - and only - private eye around found himself lining up his allies for a search that would take him from the lowest slums to the highest estates, from confrontations with butterfly- and magic-spitting enemies to run-ins with the king of crime's wayward daughter to a final encounter with an ancient evil which had once again been loosed on his unsuspecting town." 216 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Mr. Cooper takes up his story with the formation of Cromwell's New Model Army, which marked a significant change in cavalry tactics, and closes it with a chapter devoted to the South African War and the years up to the beginning of the 1914 War. In addition, he has written an epilogue to cover the period of cavalry's gradual surrender to mechanisation. Between these points lie nearly three hundred years of history and countless battles which depended for their outcome on the ability and efficiency of the cavalry arm. (He) does not attempt to describe each of these battles in detail; rather, he is concerned, by giving accounts of a series of battles typical of a campaign, or of aspects of the training and tactics of cavalry - Blenheim, Dettingen, Salamanca, Waterloo, Balaclava, etc. - to give a historical impression of the arm's growth and achievements." 373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." Macmillan, London, 1959, first edition.
298 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the second year B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to call a conference for world peace, 'Pax Mundana', and despatched a young sea tribune, Titus to collect and escort to Rome the three gr eat Kings from Africa, Asia and the Baltic. This, in the first place, is the story of how Titus carried out his unusual assignment, the hazards and dangers of his voyages and his difficulties, both practical and diplomatic, with his noble c h a r g e s . But no less important than the sea tribune is Quadrantus, the Master of the squaresailer in which he travelled. It is soon apparent that this is no ordinary ship and Quadrantus is no ordinary master: a giant of a man, he runs his du mb c re w wi th u n canny precision and his navigation and seamanship verge on the miraculous. After the fruitless conference, Titus and Quadrantus escort the three Kings on what seems a hopeless mission to King Herod. Guided by a strange st a r, the Ki ngs a re lan ded n ear Philippi, and the half-whispered stories of the phenomena which heralded the Birth of Christ and the legend of a fourth King who set off for Bethlehem with his fellows yet failed to arrive, are given an unexpect ed tw ist when see n t hro ugh the mir ror of Norbert Coulehan's narrative." THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
100 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later."
