ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by.
81 Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by. ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Public Record Office, Richmond, 2002.
Collection of 16 facsimile documents in card case - in original publisher's shrinkwrap. ISBN 1903365406 "The story of Allied codebreaking during the Second World War is one of extraordinary complexity, significance and success. The centre of Brit ain's codebreaking operation was at Bletchley Park (the home of 'Station X' during the war), and it was here the codebreakers raced to decipher German military signals, in particular the 'unbreakable' naval Enigma codes. The special intelli g e n c e ( r eferred to as 'Ultra') that they provided had a major influence on the outcome of hostilities, most notably contributing to crucial successes in the Battle for the Atlantic. Despite Churchill's orders at the end of the war that all e vi de nc e re l at in g to codebreaking be destroyed, many papers, including internal histories, summaries, and copies of decrypts, did survive. Key documents from this unique archive - many of which have never been published before - are faithfull y r epr odu ce d i n thi s p ack, providing a fascinating introduction to Britain's cryptographic secrets of the Second World War." 291 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w illustrations. "(E)xamines the often stormy relationships (of the generals and politicians of the Great War), portraying the decision-making process on both sides. Many of the individuals involved remain household names today over eighty years on: Douglas Haig, Ferdinand Foch, David Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. The results of their endeavours led to the now legendary carnage in Gallipoli, on the Somme, in the mud of Flanders and the frozen heights of the Alps. How did these great men conduct their relationships and decision-making? To answer this, the chapters range widely to look at the Home Front, the Western Front and America at war. They also deal with the role of royalty and sideshows such as Italy, where Britian and France came to the aid of faltering allies. In all of this, defeat or victory would be decided by the most forceful and dynamic leaders willing to listen to and accept the wisest counsel. (This book) brings together the works of distinguished authorities on this ever-fascinating period and adds significantly to our understanding of the often complex relationships at play." 96 Katz, Michael B. THE PEOPLE OF HAMILTON, CANADA WEST: FAMILY AND CLASS IN A MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY CITY.
Cambridge Harvard University Press 1975 0674661257 / 9780674661257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared." Bump and tiny tear at bottom of spine - light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has heavy creasing and small tear archivally taped at bottom of spine, very light wrinkling at top edge, light rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS., Kershaw, Ian.
97 Kershaw, Ian. HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1999, book club edition.
845 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "From his birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in this century....In an account drawing on many previously untapped so u r c e s - including Joseph Goebbels's diaries, recently discovered in Moscow - Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a 'drummer' sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of the infamous failed putsch , to t he l e ad ership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing bullies and fanatics whose fusion created the Nazi party - the movement that would enthrall and invigorate a disillusioned people desperate to be rescued from the economic privation of pos tw ar Ger man y. W ith nuanced care, Kershaw assesses the response of ordinary Germans to Hitler the man and to his message of a new dawn for a country hemmed in by old foes, a message shot through with racist fantasies. This volume, the first of tw o, ends wit h t he prom ulgation of the infamous Nuremberg laws that pushed German Jews to the outer fringes of society, and with the march of the German army into the Rhineland - Hitler's first steps toward the abyss of war. Fascinating and d istu rbi ng, r ich w ith ins ight and analysis whose implications remain all too relevant as we near the end of Hitler's century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. MAKING FRIENDS WITH HITLER: LORD LONDONDERRY, THE NAZIS AND THE ROAD TO WORLD WAR II., Kershaw, Ian.
98 Kershaw, Ian. MAKING FRIENDS WITH HITLER: LORD LONDONDERRY, THE NAZIS AND THE ROAD TO WORLD WAR II.
Penguin, New York, 2004, first American edition.
488 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1594200300 B&w map, plates. "Charles Stewart Henry Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, was born to power and command. Scion of one of Britain's most aristocratic fa milies, cousin of Churchill and confidant of the king, owner of vast coal fields and landed estates, married to the doyenne of London's social scene, Londonderry was an ornament to his class, the 0.1 percent of the population who still owned 3 0 p e r c ent of England's wealth as late as 1930. But history has not been kind to 'Charley', as the king called him, because, in his own words, he 'backed the wrong horse', and a very dark horse indeed: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party. Londonde rr y w as h ar dly the only British aristocrat to do so, but he was the only cabinet member to do so, and it ruined him. In a final irony, his grand London house was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in the blitz. Ian Keshaw is not out to rehabilit ate L ord Lo ndo nde rry but to understand him and to expose why he was made a scapegoat for views that were much more widely held than anyone now likes to think."
