BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
81 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries."

THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE., Finch, Robert.
85 Finch, Robert. THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE.
New York Counterpoint 2007 158243154X / 9781582431543 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

218 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2"H). B&w maps, photos. "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, (Neville Duke) found himself, aged 19, as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing, often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade, lessons that were to prove invaluable when, in November, he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn, he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa, winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires, he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign, was a warded the DSO, then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight, returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre..." ISBN 0002711354 "With the mighty Sikh Khalsa, the finest army ever seen in Asia, poised to invade India and sweep Britainnia's ill-guarded empire into the sea, every able-bodied man was needed to defend the frontier - and one at least had his answer ready when the Call of Duty came: 'I'll swim in blood first!' For stalwart Harry Flashman, arch-rotter of the Victorian era and the most decorated poltroon in the Army, had not lately escaped fr om Borneo pirates, London bookies, slavery in Madagascar, and the embraces of a mad black queen, just to be plunged into even more dreadful peril - not if he could help it. Alas - there was no avoiding the terrors of secret service in the deba u c h e d and intrigue-ridden Court of the Punjab, the attentions of its beautiful nymphomaniac Maharani (not that he minded that, really), the horrors of its torture chambers, the plots of such fearsome figures as the Tartan Pathan, the Golden Hen , an d th e mysterious Man Who Would Be King, or the baleful influence of the Mountain of Light. And that was only the beginning: ahead lay the carnage of the bloodiest campaign ever fought in India, when Sikh, Briton, and Sepoy contended for an em pi re, a nd it s fate rested on a crazy old Irish gneral and the panic-stricken Flashy vainly trying to hide behind him." University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 1997.
283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0807823341 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "In the spring of 1864, in the vast scrub forest that spread south from Virginia's Rapidan and Rappahannock Rivers, Ulysse s S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met in battle for the first time. The Wilderness campaign of May 5-6 initiated an epic confrontation between these two commanders - one that would finally end, eleven months later, with Lee's surrender at Appomat t o x . T he contributors to this volume bring modern scholarship and fresh insight to bear on the issues and leaders of the Wilderness campaign. Their essays explore the campaign's background, for example, by training an often-revisionist lens on e xp ec ta t io ns among civilians in the North and South, morale among officers and soldiers in both armies, and the strategic plans of Lee and Grant. Other essays assess the shaky performance of Union cavalry leaders Philip H. Sheridan and Jame s H arr iso n W il s on, the controversial actions of Confederate corp commanders Richard S. Ewell and A.P.Hill, and the often overlooked service of Lewis A. Grant and his Vermont Brigade. Finally, two of the most famous elements of the fighting i n th e Wi lder ness - th e 'L ee to the Rear' episode and James Longstreet's flank attack - are reconstructed in impressive detail." Rutledge Hill, Nashville, Tennessee, 1999.
229 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1558537368 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "On May 2, 1863, Stonewall Jackson was on the verge of the greatest victory of his career. Shortly before 10 p.m. he rode through the woods near Chancel lorsville, Virginia, to find where the Federals had established their line. As he returned, his own men, in the noise and confusion, opened fire, wounding Jackson several times. One of the Civil War's first heroes died eight days later. St o n e w a l l Jackson's death is but one example of Confederate killing Confederte or Yankee killing Yankee. No war was as intense and chaotic as the American Civil War. Britain and France sent armies to aid Turkey, but by the time they arrived in Bulgaria the Turks had already driven the R ussians out. The Russians came out to meet them , d r a w n up on the heights rising from the bank of the river. The battle that followed was a soldier's battle - unplanned and unco-ordinated.
