HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING., Gough, Barry M.
81 Gough, Barry M. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2001 1551250586 / 9781551250588 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Grant Macdonald.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions of artwork by Grant Macdonald and others, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and British Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on the action. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with British and Polish men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre displays the same brave purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortune and superb seamanship and weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." Very minor edge wear at bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

83 Gray, Edward. MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. SUTTON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF TRANSPORT SERIES.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Sutton 1997 0750914599 / 9780750914598 Soft Cover Very Good+
126 pp, 9 9/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The building of the Manchester Ship Canal was hailed as the greatest engineering achievement of Victorian times. The dissatisfaction of Manchester merchants with high railway rates and excessive port dues charged on imports and exports passing through Liverpool led to a movement to excavate a waterway as wide and as deep as the Suez Canal, so that ocean-going steamships would be able to load and discharge in the heartland of the south-east Lancashire industrial area. The opening of the canal in 1894 dramatically reduced transport costs for industrialists and transformed an inland city into a major port. This history of its construction and operation is divided into themes. A selection of over 200 photographs covers the whole 36-mile length of the canal, from the Mersey Estuary, through Ellesmere Port and Runcorn, to the terminal docks in Salford. Included are sections on the construction period 1887-94, the early operating practices, major shipping companies, tug-boats, canal railways, special features, and the centenary. The vast majority of illustrations are previously unpublished photographs, many from official sources, charting the progress and development of the canal since its inception. The final chapter bring the story up to date with current plans as the canal moves into its second century of operation. This book will be of interest to local historians, industrial archaeologists, waterway enthusiasts, and ship-lovers everywhere." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light waviness to book, minor rubbing.

278 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Among the people who have achieved eminence on the contemporary scene, in the arts, in the professions, in public service, in education, an unexpectedly large number (come from) Winnipeg, the North End. This book began as an inquiry into the forces that led to so rich a harvest of talent from one small section of an ordinary city on the edge of the Canadian prairie. In a series of eighteen reminiscences by former North-Enders, it attempts to reconstruct the quality of life in that polyglot community in the years immediately before and after World War II, and from the point of view of one distinctive ethnic group, the children of Jewish immigrants. Jews constituted only a small proportion of the North End's ethnic mix, but as a group they quickly reached a remarkable level of acculturation and achievement, setting the tone and pace for the entire enclave." Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1982 0771040482 / 9780771040481 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
210 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "They called them the 'Brylcreem boys' - the young flyers who streamed into England from the first declaration of war, the kids with the jaunty grins and the willingness to take terrible risks. Among them were thousands of young Canadians, many barely out of high school, all delighted to leave behind humdrum lives in dusty, post-Depression Canada for the irresistible chance to learn to fly and help beat the Germans. Doug Harvey was one of them - a nineteen-year-old from Toronto who joined the RCAF, and in 1942 found himself a pilot in the elite Canadian No. 6 Bomber Group. (Here) is the fresh, frank, and often hilarious account of Harvey's experiences overseas. It is an unexpurgated description of what really happened to the group of young Canadian men who suddenly found themselves billeted in freezing Nissen huts in the lush English countryside - surround-ed by an unfamiliar people, whose customs puzzled and delighted them - and charged with the job of bombing Gemany into ruins. It is the chilling story of crews flying through the silent night skies, their lumbering Lancasters loaded with bombs, headed for unseen desinations hundreds of miles away. It is the jubilant story of the boys who made it safely home, mission accomplished, and the heart-breaking story of the thousands who didn't." Faint erased pencil narks at top corner of free front endpaper, light edge wear, book is slightly cocked, tiny foxing marks on top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two edge tears archivally taped, light foxing on inside of spine, slight darkening to spine and some edges, tiny closed tear on front hinge, light rubbing and soiling.

Hutchison, London, 1951, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....the most exciting, most illuminating and probably the most profound study of post-war England yet published. A journey through the country - westwards to Cornwall, north to Lancashire and Yor kshire - has been used as a framework for the real theme of the book: the social-economic revolution of England. Every single social group is presented and few people know them better than the author, who combines the precision of the tra i n e d s o c i o logist with the insight of the born novelist. He employs a contrast technique full of surprise and excitement. From an aristocratic mansion he leads us to a London slum; from the emotional life of the debutante to the emotional li fe o f t he y ou ng d ock-worker; from the problems of the new Oxford undergraduate to the problems of the new coal-miner; from the struggles of provincial youth to the struggles of the Displaced Person in our midst; from the open doubts of th e m idd le cl as s t o t he tra gic secret of many a new writer....presents a valuable, and at the same time vastly entertaining picture of the new England." Ithaca, New York Cornell University Press 1996 0801483492 / 9780801483493 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
250 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(C)ombines the tools of the historian and the folklorist to explore the development of a powerful, polysemous cultural symbol. Owain Glyndwer, called Owen Glendower by Shakespeare, led the last major armed rebellion of the Welsh against the English in the early fifteenth century. He has become an important symbol of modern Welsh nationalism. Beginning with a brief history of Glyndwr's life and times and a discussion of the traditional patterns of earlier Welsh heroes, Henken examines the roles Glyndwr played both in his own lifetime and in subsequent centuries. His primary role, Henken demonstrates, has been as national redeemer-hero, the leader whose coming is awaited so that he might restore the nation to its former glory. Glyndwr has also been cast as a trickster, outlaw, and military leader. Henken's interviews demonstrate that Glyndwr continues to be recognized today for his multifaceted identity as a national saviour. Through her analysis of the ways in which successive generations have reshaped Glyndwr's legend to serve their own needs, Henken provides a valuable case study in how any culture constantly rereads its past to maintain group identity and meet the challenges of the present." 99 Hewer, Howard. Foreword by Group Captain Kenneth McDonald. Introduction by Flight Lieutenant William H. Dixon. IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND: THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURE OF A WIRELESS OPERATOR IN BOMBER COMMAND.
Stoddart, Toronto, 2000.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077373273X B&w photographs, maps. "In 1940, 19-year-old Howard Hewer dreamed of being the next Billy Bishop, of piloting Spitfires or Hurricanes over Europe. His dream was shattered when he was selected instead for a career as a wireless operator. But his thirst for adventure would certainly be satisfied. He was not to be a pilot, but he would play a vital role in air operations in World War II over Europe and the Mediterrane an. Hewer's life in Bomber Command was never dull, and almost always bittersweet. During training, he fell out of a Fairey Battle, and held on by only one foot high over Lake Erie. In London, he survived a run-in with the infamous 'Piccad i l l y C o m mandos', then dug for victims of an air raid in the rubble of a dance hall. But Hewer found life in the belly of Wellington, or 'Wimpy', bombers the most hazardous of all. He and his crew of 218 and 148 Squadrons flew important nigh t op er at i on s ov er Germany and North Africa, dropping their deadly payloads while dodging enemy flak. All the while, Hewer was busy at the radio controls identifying his Wimpy's position and detecting false codes from Axis operators, who were al way s o n t he pr ow l t o lure unsuspecting Allied bombers into landing on enemy airfields. On perhaps his bravest mission of the war, as a driver for the RAF in North Africa, Hewer drove deep behind enemy lines, where he exchanged fire with I tal ian troo ps. An othe r t ime, in Suez, he became bored while on medical leave, and joined on as a wireless operator on another operation. Soon after takeoff, the plane took flak and crash landed on the desert floor. Hewer was trapped, his le gs c rush ed ag ains t hi s rad io, the e ngines of the plane threatening to explode. At times comical, at others tragic, Howard Hewer's stirring story will leave a lasting imprint on the memory of its readers." Dust jacket has minor rubbing. Nea r Fin e/Nea r Fine
