In (this book, he) takes us back to early courses such as the Stony Mountain course built by prisoners around 1889 and golf clubs, beginning with the first established club in Virden in 1892. AGRICOLA AND THE CONQUEST OF THE NORTH., Hanson, W.S.
83 Hanson, W.S. AGRICOLA AND THE CONQUEST OF THE NORTH.
B.T. Batsford, London, 1987, first edition.
210 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0713406070 B&w maps, plans, photographs. "Under the governorship of Agricola (AD 77-84) the Romans extended their conquest of Britain to North Wales, northern Britain and, with the vi ctory at Mons Graupius, to northern Scotland. In this thorough - yet eminently readable - reassessment of the literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence, William Hanson shows just how this rapid progress was achieved and at the same t i m e c o n s iders how far the governor himself was responsible for the Roman successes. The major theme running through his study is that the exceptionally full literary evidence, in the form of Tacitus' biography of Agricola, should not be g i ve n un du e w ei gh t against the archaeological evidence - particularly as Tacitus was writing about his own father-in-law. Indeed, the book's conclusion is that, contrary to the impression deliberately created by Tacitus, Agricola himself was n ot a maj or fi gur e o f h is day and his achievements in Britain were in no way extraordinary. In particular it shows that the effects of the brief Roman presence in Scotland was negligible. Throughout, Dr. Hanson....uses the latest archaeolo gic al ev iden ce to full adv anta ge in constructing this period of British history under the Romans. In particular, he is able to draw on his experience excavating the important Agricolan site at Red House, Corbridge and the recently discovered Agri col an fort at Elg inhau gh, j ust o uts ide Edinburgh." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light rubbing, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of sp ine, soft cr ease alo ng t op edg e of r ear pa nel. Very Good+/Very Good

A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS., Heal, S.C.
87 Heal, S.C. A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS.
Vanwell, St Catharines, Ontario, 1999, first edition.
312 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1551250233 B&w photographs, drawings, plus large fold-out plan: "General Arrangement Standard Steamer" in pocket at rear. "The era of the Canadian Forts and Parks has long since passed into history. While it lasted, it engaged a great deal of effort and capital on a scale never seen before in our country; from the men and women in the shipyards, to the crews who manned the ships, and the industrial leaders who transformed the s h i p y a r ds from very small-scale producers into world-scale shipbuilders for their day. By 1941 Canada's small shipbuilders had begun to turn out a fleet of 10,000- and 4,700-ton merchant ships which in every way were the equal of those from Br it is h an d Am erican shipyards. At the height of this great effort the Canadian yards were delivering one new ship every three days. Not only did we send to sea a large fleet of Park ships under the Canadian flag, manned by Canadian crews and ma nag ed by Ca na dia n managers, but we also bare-boat-chartered a similar size fleet of Fort sister ships for British management and operation. These Fort and Park ships were to be found in every theatre of war from 1942 on, at all times willi ng w orkh ors es of t he ocea ns, unheralded, unsung and later, like their crews, usually ignored by historians and government alike. While the postwar survivors of this fleet sailed under many flags, they did constitute an important element in reb uildi ng th e pe ace that fo llowe d. And now that Canada is no longer an owner of deep sea ships under the Canadian flag, it is timely that we remember our achievement of over fifty years ago. It was a unique undertaking that will never be repe ated i n a wo rld n ow s o diff eren t." M oderate bump at top of spine/rear hinge area. 88 Heming, Arthur. THE DRAMA OF THE FORESTS: ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.
Toronto S.B. Gundy 1924 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good+ No Jacket Arthur Heming.
324 pp, 7 3/4" H. 14 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated). "(I) travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack-train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and 'alligator'. (B)ack again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains - (but) I wish to explain that in compliance with the wishes of the leading actors - who actually lived their parts of this story - fictitious names have been given to the principal characters and to the principal trading posts, lakes, and rivers herein depicted. Furthermore, in order to give the reader a more interesting, complete, and faithful description of the daily and the yearly life of the forest dwellers as I have observed it, I have taken the liberty of weaving together the more interesting facts I have gathered - both first- and second-hand - into one continuous narrative as though it all happened in a single year. And in order to retain all the primitive local colour, the unique costumes, and the fascinating romance of the fur-trade days as I witnessed them in my twenties - though much of the life has already passed away - the scene is set to represent a certain year in the early (1890s)." Separation between some page gatherings (mainly at illustration locations) - pages are firm in binding, very slight bump at top corner of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block, three very small stains on top of text block, minor rubbing on boards. Book is protected in a stiff mylar sleeve.

668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...."
