Belfast Appletree 1993 0862814324 / 9780862814328 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Liisa Hindsberg.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w drawings, music notation. "The material in this book has been culled from many sources and I have brought together a comprehensive range of children's games played throughout Ireland, complete with music notation, game instructions and background notes setting each game in its historical perspective. In this collection I have included long forgotten games, such as 'Thread the Needle' and 'Here Is One Knight' - games of great antiquity that give us glimpses of the Middle Ages. There are also the more popular games, such as 'Nuts in May', 'The Farmer's in His Den' and 'Briar Rosebud' that are as familiar to the children of Europe and America as they are to the children of Ireland. These are the games that have survived 'the usual rubbing or blurring consequent on long use among unlettered people'. The versions I have given are not the definitive ones and, inevitably, readers will have different ways of playing the games. This does not detract from them but emphasises the tenacity of children's folklore, the survival of which has defied time and place." Interior - very light toning to inside of covers, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light rubbing, minor edge wear, small scuff on bottom of text block.

90 Matthews, John. Foreword by Mildred Leake Day. GAWAIN: KNIGHT OF THE GODDESS. RESTORING AN ARCHETYPE.
Wellingborough Aquarian Press 1990 085030783X / 9780850307832 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
208 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Gawain was once the most important knight at Arthur's court, a shining example of all that was best in chivalry at the time. However, as the popularity of the Arthurian romances grew the character of Gawain diminished, leaving him represented as a villain rather than as Champion of the Goddess. How this transformation came about, and the reasons why, are explored here. In this deeply researched volume (Matthews) examines all the known texts relating to Gawain, beginning with early Celtic references and working through the Latin romances and the vivid stories of the Middle Ages, including the famous 'Morte d'Arthur' of Sir Thomas Malory. From these texts the author has rediscovered the original Gawain - a figure of great mythical, magical and historical importance. Gawain's many adventures and several identities are studied in detail, providing a completely fresh and exciting appraisal of the texts in question, and this works adds considerably to our understanding of the Arthurian cycle and Gawain's part in it. It also contains a thorough investigation of the actual site of the famous 'Green Chapel' and the first English translation of the fragmentary medieval text 'The Childhood of Gawain'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - migrates into page margins, light remainder mark on bottom of text block, previous owner's bookplate on free front endpaper, very small printing ink stain in margin of page 169. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing and faint line indents on rear panel.

Christabel Maxwell is a grand-daughter of Mrs Gatty and a niece of Mrs Ewing. This biography of two remarkable (Victorian) women (authors), based on letters and diaries seen by no one these last fifty years and hitherto never fully utilised, can therefore fairly claim to be a 'standard family biography' in the completest form. Mrs Gatty...was a naturalist of repute, the founder and editor of 'Aunt Judy's Magazine' and the author...of five series of 'Parables from Nature'...Mrs Ewing...(was) one of the best-loved writers of books for children. 'The Brownies', 'Lob-lie-by-the-f i r e', 'Jackanapes', 'Jan of the Windmill, 'Daddy Darwin's Dovecot' - these and half a dozen other stories are an inablienable part of the childhood memories of most persons of fifty or more years of age..." ROAD TO RESISTANCE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY., Millar, George.

London Bodley Head 1979 0370302052 / 9780370302058 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
412 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, map. "In this remarkable autobiography, one of the universally recognised and most individual heroes of the Second World War retravels the course of the first thirty-four years of his life, a road that led from his childhood amid two wealthy Scottish families to his war-time exploits as an escaper and as a terrorist in the Resistance. Just as the war came to an end George Millar wrote two books about his experiences, 'Maquis' and 'Horned Pigeon'. Both were best-sellers, but both were bridled by the Official Secrets Act. It is only now that his full story can be told. 'Josh' Millar's real education was accomplished on the hunting field, in France, and at his London base in Jermyn Street, the Cavendish, under the kindly eye of Rosa Lewis. He trained as an architect at Cambridge but then joined the merchant navy as an ordinary seaman. Persuaded to try his hand at journalism, he engineered a scoop aboard the 'Nahlin' and joined the 'Express', where he became one of 'Lord Beaverbrook's young men'. The outbreak of war found him as a member of an elite Paris 'Express' team that included Alan Moorehead, Geoffrey Cox and Sefton Delmer. Evacuated after the fall of France, he joined the Rifle Brigade, was captured in the Western Desert and interned in an Italian POW camp. After many escape attempts he jumped a prison train, spent months being passed secretly from contact to contact within France and finally got away via Gibraltar. Joining the SOE, he parachuted back into Eastern France just before D-Day, his instructions being to organise local Resistance groups and to sabotage German communications. It proved to be, in personal terms, one of the happiest periods of his life." Book slightly cocked, a few minor light foxing marks and minor browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling.

London Hodder and Stoughton 1994 0340485620 / 9780340485620 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
316 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "Sir Alec Guinness's performances in films such as 'Oliver Twist', 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', and 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', as well as in countless plays in the Theatre and on television, have ensured his position as one of the greatest actors of the post-war era. He seems able not so much to portray the characters he plays as to become them. But the gift is deceptive. How can he really be all the different people he has played? How does he do it? (This book) delves into the actor's complex, enigmatic personality and into the nature of his remarkable talent. (O'Connor) probes the formative spiritual and emotional events in his life - his illegitimacy, his unanchored childhood, and his conversion to Roman Catholicism. Drawing on interviews with scores of friends and colleagues, (he) traces Guinness's acting roots and, closely relating the man to the roles he has created, renders the drama of his development. With portraits of notable figures in Guinness's life including John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, David Lean, Tyrone Guthrie, George Lucas, T.S. Eliot, John le Carre and Alan Bennett, O'Connor recreates a remarkably diverse, long and distinguished career. His penetrating analysis is one which celebrates, and preserves, the integrity of the actor and the man." 174 pp, 10 3/4" H. B&w photographs, colour and b&w reproductions. "Throughout (this book) Daphne Odjig's story has been told by herself as related through R.M. Vanderburgh and M.E. Southcott. As a product of an oral tradition that was still flourishing during her childhood in the village of Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay, Daphne became a superb storyteller, in the tradition of her elders. It is this inheritance that she has built on as she told her stories to her two collaborators. Odjig's skills as a storyteller are reflected in the impressionistic introductions to many of the chapters. Her lively expresion of events and activities in her life come vividly alive for Vanderburgh who has maintained as much as possible the authenticity of Odjig's narratives and tried to pass these impressions along to the reader. Odjig's skill in visual communication is evident in the paintings reproduced here. Southcott has tried to pass on to the reader the thoughts and emotions the artist experienced in the creation of these paintings." Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, small tear on front panel near hinge - archivally taped, tiny dent on front hinge, tiny sticker removal mark on front panel.
