London Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations 1967 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Good+
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In this careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the political developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945., Barclay, Glen St. J.
89 Barclay, Glen St. J. THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1976 0297771256 / 9780297771258 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good
276 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) study of the military strength of Britain and her Empire during the Boer War, First World War and Second World War. Dr Barclay evaluates the contributions of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and the changing roles played by the colonies during times of crisis. He explains British attitudes to colonial troops - Australian indiscipline and New Zealand thoroughness - and the lack of diplomacy on the part of British military leaders when dealing with their colonial counterparts. After the South Africa War the British government should have seen clearly the advantages of an Empire Military Force, but reports on empire defence from eminent naval officers such as Fanshawe and Jellicoe were repeatedly ignored. The colonies themselves all reacted differently to the threat of war. Australia was often at odds with New Zealand - the former worried about defending her own vulnerable coastline, the latter primarily concerned to maintain friendly relationships with Britain; Canada was slow to become involved - but Canadian troops were a stirring sight, well-disciplined fighting men who obeyed their superiors without question; South Africa made little contribution to the war effort, although her Prime Minister, Jan Smuts, gained great favour with the British Government by always agreeing, in principle, to every new plan put forward by the British. Dr Barclay has written an outstanding account of the achievements of the British Empire during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, using a vast number of published and unpublished sources." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on free front endpaper; light edge wear; tiny bump on top edge of front board; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 69 pp, + large b&w plate section (photographs, reproductions), 11 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth with gold lettering on spine, gold crest on front board. "(C)elebrates the quincentenary of the introduction of printing at Oxford with a pictorial history of its subsequent progress, illustrated by the books, documents, and pictures which are its tangible record. The story, although it properly begins with the arrival of Theodoric Rood and the first learned and educational books that he printed, stretches back to the early thirteenth century when scribes, illuminators, and binders of books were already found in Oxford; but it was not until the seventeenth century that, at the initiative of two great men, Archbishop Laud and Bishop Fell, the University Press in its present form was established. It is the dark, dominant figure of John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, and then Bishop of Oxford, who emerges as the real founder of the University Press, and the man who determined the type of books which still preoccupy the Press: learned and educational books, and the Bible." Tiny soiling mark on top of text block, small shallow bump to top of both boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has old tape repairs at top/bottom inside of spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small surface paper loss on front panel, minor soiling.

BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
95 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE., Barr, Luke.
96 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

THE MEASURE OF THE RULE., Barr, Robert. Introduction by Louis K. MacKendrick.
97 Barr, Robert. Introduction by Louis K. MacKendrick. THE MEASURE OF THE RULE.
University of Toronto Press, (Toronto, 1973).
308 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover. ISBN 0802020720 'Literature of Canada - Poetry and Prose in Reprint' series. "(This book), originally published in 1907, is the nearest (Barr) came to writing an autobiographical novel. It concerns the Toronto Normal School and the experiences there in the 1870s of a young man who undoubtedly is Barr himself. In this novel, Barr is exorcising unhappy memories and is ironic, even bitter, about the school's quality of education, the rigid discipli n e o b s e r ved by its staff and their indifference to their students, and the sexual segregation practised...As a realistic study of Ontario's only central teacher-training institution in the late nineteenth century, (it) will appeal both to th os e i nt er es te d in Canadian fiction of the period and to those more concerned with the evolution of the system of education established by Egerton Ryerson. Also included with this reprint of the novel is an essay originally published in 1899 a nd en ti tle d ' Lit era tu re in Canda'. In this essay, Barr elaborated upon his opinions of the school system and its quality of education." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light fading at e dge s a nd on s pine , li ght edg e wear/wrinkling, three tiny tears archivally taped. Near Fine/Very Good

98 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

100 Bayne-Powell, Rosamond. HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.)
London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were."
