81 Innes, Michael. THE MYSTERIOUS COMMISSION.
London Gollancz 1974 0575018577 / 9780575018570 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Charles Honeybath's clients are usually successful businessmen, and he does very well out of them, but his latest commission is a most unusual one. He is offered twice his standard fee if he will agree to spend a fortnight in the country, at a place unspecified, painting the portrait of a client who must remain unidentified. Curiosity, rather than cupidity, impels Honeybath to accept the strange terms. Whereupon he is drawn into an extremely bizarre, and for some people fatal, adventure. To give away even the plot's first surprise would be to give away far too much. But when Honeybath discovers the startling motive for the extraordinary commission, this is only the beginning of his own intrepid venture into the field of criminal investigation. True, the police are by now investigating too, and most urgently, for the crime is a big one. But Honeybath goes it alone, with his own private clues, which include the main line from Paddington to Swansea - and Michael Innes fans know that whenever one of his characters boards a train, something interesing happens. Innes is, as ever, delightfully relaxed, and his criminals are an engaging gang - or two gangs, to be precise; but in this novel there are darker colours too, and hints of terror." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump at top corner of rear board, book is lightly cocked a few tiny foxing marks on top of textblock. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
Price: 15.00 USD

At El Alamein, General Montgomery's Eighth Army is preparing for the big push that will drive Rommel's Afrika Korps back through the Libyan Desert. But a vital initial task has to be undertaken: the destruction of Rommel's communications and supply dumps far behind the enemy lines. The mission is entrusted to two elite forces, the Long Range Desert Group and the Special Air Service. The e x p l o i t s of the SAS, less than two years old, have already become legendary. Lieutenant Callum Douglas, fresh from the desert battles as a tank commander with the 20th Hussars, counts himself fortunate to be selected to join this tough band o f fi gh te rs - a nd soon proves himself in action. Beaten in Libya, the Germans plan to make a formidable last stand in Tunisia, and Douglas finds that the work of the SAS is only just beginning. By boat, the SAS commandos infiltrate into ene my te rri tor y t o s tri ke hard at the headquarters of Germany's own elite, the Brandenburg Division. With only a handful of men, Douglas cannot afford to lose the advantage of surprise, but the route to Tunis is hampered by betrayal, and the ing enu ity and cou rage of the hig hly-trained men is tested even beyond their expectations...." 305 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "(S)trips away the glamorous image of the notorious gang and reveals its 'brothers' for what they are: murderers, drug dealers and big businessmen with an eye to expanding their territory. (This) is the incredible story of one man, FBI informant Anthony Tait, who accomplished what law enforcement officials had believed was impossible - on a bet with two Alaska police officers for a steak dinner and a bottle of bourbon, he became the only person ever to infiltrate the Hells Angels organization. After only six years as a Hells Angel, Tait rose up in the ranks to become the right-hand man of Sonny Barger, the famous leader of the Club. By the time the FBI sting operation had reached its conclusion, 42 Hells Angels - including Sonny Barger himself - were jailed on various drug, weapons and murder charges. With the threat of Hells Angels expansion ever-present, and biker wars erupting in cities where the influence of the Hells Angels was once invisible, 'Into the Abyss' is both a chilling true-crime story and a timely warning about the danger in our own backyard." Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
262 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John A. McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). During his lifetime he saw the Indians signing their lands over to the Crown; watched the hamlet of Edmonton by-passed by the railroad and later cut off for weeks by hostile Indians during the second Riel Rebellion. He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed. (This book) throws new light on an important section of Canadian history and illustrates the magnitude of the changes that have taken place in the West in the past hundred years." THE BIG M: THE FRANK MAHOVLICH STORY., Mahovlich, Ted. (Frank Mahovlich) Signed and Inscribed. Foreword by Red Fisher.
100 Mahovlich, Ted. (Frank Mahovlich) Signed and Inscribed. Foreword by Red Fisher. THE BIG M: THE FRANK MAHOVLICH STORY.
Toronto HarperCollins 1999 0002000105 / 9780002000109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Inscribed by Subject & Signed by Author.
244 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs. Inscribed on half title page: "To P___ B___ Merry Xmas Frank Mahovlich 27" and signed "Ted Mahovlich". The black marker used in the signing/inscription has bled through the page somewhat. "Hockey fans who saw Frank Mahovlich play will never forget the combination of power and grace that defined the on-ice presence of a hockey superstar. Growing up in Schumacher, Ontario, Frank graduated from the St. Michael's Majors to the Toronto Maple Leafs at age nineteen. In his first year in the National Hockey League, 1957-58, he beat out Chicago sensation Bobby Hull for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. And so began a career that spanned twenty-one years in the NHL and World Hockey Association. Rich with anecdotes, 'The Big M' captures the spirit and times of a Hall of Famer career: four Stanley Cups with the great Leafs teams of the '60s'; his bitter struggle with Punch Imlach; the infamous million-dollar deal with the Chicago Blackhawks; the Leafs-Red Wings trade that saw Frank hook up with Alex Delvecchio and Gordie Howe to form the Production Line II; the end of the six-team era; glory years in Montreal and two more Stanley Cups; the 1972 Canada/Russia series; his move to the WHA's Toronto Toros and the wild stories from a league of a different kind; the Senate appointment and personal reflections." Previous owner's place, Christmas notation, date and signature on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
