Melville Henry Cane, 1879-1980, was a graduate of Columbia University and partner in the law firm Ernst, Fox & Cane in New York, where he was legal counsel to Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ayn Rand, William, Saroyan, Thomas Wolfe and others. He was also a poet, producing several volumes of verse, writing "Making a Poem" in 1953 and winning the Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in 1971. The books: 1. January Garden, 1926, 70 pp, 8 1/2" H, black cloth spine with white paper title label/black lettering on spine, black paper covered boards, top edge orange, orange endpapers. Inscribed on title page: "For Tommy Atkins / From his old friend, / Melville Cane 4/1/26". Orange dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 2. A Wider Arc: Poems, 1947, 186 pp, 8 5/8" H, black cloth with gilt lettering on spine, white endpapers. Inscribed on title page (Cane has crossed out his printed name): "For Tommy / From Melville, / April '47. This volume includes a prose piece, "Making a Poem". Dust jacket has red spine/front panel with white lettering, white rear panel with red lettering. ALSO: 5 letters/notes on Ernst, Fox & Cane letterhead to G.C. Atkins (George Chew "Tommy" Atkins), a fellow Columbia graduate and lawyer who moved to a farm in Ontario, Canada in 1921. 1. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated March 31/26. References the "sporty" proposition of exchanging Cane's first book of verse for some of Tommy's apples, commenting on Tommy's giving up of "this unproductive law activity and grow(ing) something worthwhile." In response to an invitation to visit Ontario, Cane says that he happens "to be the only person in America out of jail who hasn't a car." 2. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated April 7/26. References the arrival of the apples and the finding of three with soft spots, but continuing "if you find only three poems with soft spots, it'll be a stand-off." 3. Full sheet, typed, signed "Melville Cane", dated April 20th, 1926. Comments favorably on Tommy's idea of raising turkeys, but "do not expect epics from me in exchange." Mentions he has conveyed Tommy's greetings to Harcourt and Brace (Cane was on their board of directors). 4. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated 3/9/33. Comments on the university's (Columbia's), and the general, lack of appreciation for poets and mentioning that he is sending "a couple of specimens (of poetry) of different moods." (see below). 5. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville', dated 6/25/51. Mentioning the death of a mutual acquaintance and hoping Tommy will visit. The first two pieces in this group have pencil notations at the bottom, probably by Tommy. WITH: a group of four poems. Three are typed on full sheets of paper, each with one correction in pen and one with a pencil quotation from a poem by John Erskine (a mutual friend). "Melville Cane" is typed at the bottom of each of these sheets, but they are NOT signed. The three poems ("Hymn to Night", "Petition" and "Ancient Organ Grinder") were later published in "A Wider Arc". "Hymn to Night" and "Ancient Organ Grider" were included with Cane's letter to Tommy of 3/9/33. The fourth poem, on a 3 1/4" square scrap of paper, is handwritten in ink, with crossings out and smears and refers to honeybees - it was tucked into "Behind Dark Spaces", at the dedication page, where Cane gives Tommy directions on where to send his honey. WITH: Three items relating to Bernard M.L. Ernst, Cane's long-time friend, fellow Columbia graduate and partner in the law firm of Ernst, Fox & Cane. Ernst was also president of the New York Branch of the Society American Magicians and Vice President of the Magicians' Club of London. 1. "an address / by Melville H. Cane / delivered at the funeral of / Bernard M.L. Ernst / at Earl Hall, Columbia / University, November 30, / 1938" - [8] pp (not including covers), stapled, 7 3/4" H. 2. CORNELL CAPA: PHOTOGRAPHS., Capa, Cornell and Whelan, Richard, editors.
83 Capa, Cornell and Whelan, Richard, editors. CORNELL CAPA: PHOTOGRAPHS.
Boston Bulfinch Press / Little, Brown 1992 0821217771 / 9780821217771 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Cornell Capa.
216 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w. "Cornell Capa, world famous for his photo-journalism as well as for his founding of New York's International Center of Photography, has had a long an d productive working life. His career has spanned several key decades of the twentieth century, and his work has taken him around the globe to cover political events and chronic social problems, to photograph the famous and the unsung. As a self-described concerned photographer, Cornell Capa has always been led by his instincts to photograph people - all kinds of people - with a humanitarian commitment. This book reflects that commitment in unforgettable pictures of missionaries in Central and South America; religious and tribal rituals; the presidental campaigns of Adlai Steven-son and John F. Kennedy; political upheavals, refugees, and wars; the historic and the marginal. Here, too, are moments of whimsy and joy, from Harlem to London to Peru, and memorable images of celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Alec Guiness, Grandma Moses, Billy Graham, and Boris Pasternak. Despite the wide recognition of Cornell Capa's achievements, and the fact that he has spent his lifetime furthering the art of photography, this book is the first retrospective collection of his work to be published in the United States. All these photographs transmit crucial aspects of the political, social, cultural, and religious history of our times." Very minor cocking to book. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

London Bison 1990 0861246209 / 9780861246205 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
192 pp, folio (14 1/2" H). "Created, ordered and led by Hitler, the state apparatus of Nazi Germany rigorously controlled all aspects of life in the Third Reich from cradle to grave. To maintain his iron grip on the German people through the ministries of his dictatorial government, Hitler surrounded himself with a small clique of fanatical, devoted acolytes. Men such as Heinrich Himmler, the much-feared chief of the Waffen-SS and organiser of the Holocaust, and Hermann Goering, the bombastic head of the Luftwaffe, wielded enormous power and held the fate of millions in their corrupt hands. (This book) tells the inside story of the Third Reich, looking at the personalities, roles and rivalries of Hitler's closest associates: Joseph Goebbels, the astute propaganda minister; Joachim von Ribbentrop, the Reich's chief diplomat; Rudolph Hess, Hitler's disgraced deputy; Albert Speer, the manager of the Reich's economy; Baldur von Schirach, the fanatic who moulded the thoughts of the youth of Germany; Alfred Rosenberg, the man who created the philosophical framework for the ideology of Nazisim; Martin Bormann, Hitler's enigmatic advisor; and Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress. Written by ( two) noted Dutch historians, (it) reveals the truth behind the fascade of the Third Reich and is an important contribution to the literature of the Nazi era. Illustrated with 300 photographs, many in colour, this book is a must for any student of the rise and fall of the Third Reich and its leaders." 197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." Very light rubbing on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.

CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
90 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

And so to bring this greatest dream to life Elin works at the grocery store for kind old Mr. Kurtcheff. "This book consists of a cluster of epigrams, forty-nine essays on various subjects, a poem dispraising dogmata, and several selections from an unfinished play. Taken ensemble, the forty-nine astonish and cheer and enlighten their progenitor. He's astonished that, as nearly as anyone can make out, I wrote them. He's cheered because, while re-reading them, I've encountered a great deal of liveliness and nothing dead. Last but not least; he's enlightened via the realization that, whereas times can merely change, an individual may grow." From the author's Foreword.
