"OUR SPECIAL ARTIST": ALFRED R. WAUD'S CIVIL WAR., Ray, Frederic E.
82 Ray, Frederic E. "OUR SPECIAL ARTIST": ALFRED R. WAUD'S CIVIL WAR.
Mechanicsburg, PA Stackpole 1994 0811711943 / 9780811711944 Second Hardcover Edition. Near Fine Very Good+ Alfred R. Waud.
192 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions, photographs. "Waud covered the war from the first to the last, initially for the 'New York Illustrated News', and later for 'Harper's'. From the formation of the Confederate government in Montgomery, Alabama, to the last campaigns of Grant's army leading Appomattox, 'Alf' Waud was there, pencil in hand. Waud even went into battle alongside the Yankee troops he accompanied in the field. He was under fire almost as much as they as he frantically sketched the rudiments of the brutal scenes before him, then polished them after the fight to send them to the publisher. Teams of engravers worked through the night when his sketches arrived, turning them into wood block engravings used to print the next week's edition. Portraits of great generals, scenes in camp and field, the look of battle - all came from Waud's pencil. Along with his drawings he often sent firsthand accounts of what he had seen, acting as an informal reporter as well as an artist. He went where even the photographers could not go, and the result is that while several other battle artists also worked for 'Harper's' and its competitors, Alfred Waud is the one whose view of the conflict dominated the public mind in the North. People of the Union literally saw the Civil War through his eyes. Here Waud's sketches are taken from battlefield to sketch, engraving and final publication, showing the methods by which he worked, and comparing the accuracy of what he drew with what is known of the actual events. Also included, to provide a picture of the world in which Waud worked, are some drawings by his peers, including his brother William Waud - also a noted artist of the era. And Ray takes Waud beyond the war: the artist carried his pencils into the peace that followed, drawing right up to the time of his death." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, 2" soft crease on front panel.

MAURICE SENDAK - FANTASY SKETCHES., Sendak, Maurice.
85 Sendak, Maurice. MAURICE SENDAK - FANTASY SKETCHES.
Philadelphia Philip H. & A.S.W. Rosenbach Foundation 1970 First Edition Very Good Maurice Sendak.
Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Published for an exhibition of original drawings and other materials illustrating the art of Maurice Sendak, with an introduction by the artist. Sendak describes the work as "fantasy sketches, stream-of-consciousness doodles, dream pictures, and probably most apt, homework drawings" which he drew between roughly 1952-1957. "In one way or another, all such drawings of this period hint at themes that later were developed in my books for children. In fact, they touch all the obsessions and ideas that eventually bore fruit in what I consider my best and most personal work." We certainly see hints of "Where the Wild Things Are" and other works that were then in Sendak's future. Also included is a blank Christmas card and envelope with a lovely Sendak illustration, published by the Rosenbach Foundation, with a copyright date of 1971. Interior - a slight small bump at top corner of the first few pages, two soft creases to top edge of 6 middle page leaves, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - a 1" strip of light browning at bottom of rear cover, very light edge wear, small soft crease at top corner of front cover.

"This book demonstrates how two strains of influence - the resurgence of Classicsim and the impact of 'pri mitivism' on Western culture - provide links between Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and the birth of Modernism. Certain polarities generated by these two different strains - tradition versus innovation, Western versus non-Western c u l t u r e , t he timelessness of myth versus the experience of modern life - were driven by ideas that developed formalist parallels. This can be seen in the struggle between the figurative and abstract in art, and in the contrast between the pa st or al i dy ll a n d the contemporary landscape...." WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
90 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Spring Books, London, nd.
195 pp, large square 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour plates. "One of the most fascinating periods in European art history, the Baroque marks a triumphant break with the rules and restrictive for mulas of the Renaissance. Its genius was Bernini, whose sustained imaginative powers and incredible technical skill brought the Baroque style to its fullest maturity. In lesser hands, where the mastery of technique was not so assured and the cr e a t ive imagination not so well disciplined, the pitfalls are all too obvious. No style perhaps has ever captured the imagination quite so quickly; throughout Europe commissions poured in, wealthy landowners and rich merchants vying with each oth er t o express their ambitions and achievements in building, painting and sculpture, in itself an interesting sidelight on social history. The Czech lands were no exception, and the variety and high level of achievement in the contemporary Baroque st yle a re amply illustrated by the plates in this present volume. The accompanying text supplies a full documentation of Czech sculpture of the period and discusses in detail a number of important artists whose work deserves to be more widely k nown ." London Jonathan Cape 2007 0224078755 / 9780224078757 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
496 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "The first full-scale biography of one of Britain's most important twentieth-century painters. Edward Burra never followed fashion: in the thirties, when modern art was dominated by abstraction and landscape, he painted people; in the sixites, when landscape was completely out of fashion, he started to find it interesting. His life was an unusual one: profoundly disabled, he lived with his parents, and was in constant pain. Only when he was painting could he forget his body. At the same time he was a man with a rich and full life. He was a letter-writer of genius, writing every afternoon to a wide circle of friends. His letters are camp, witty, full of the energy and delight in life which he could not express physically. Inventive, entertaining, and extraordinarily original, his writing expresses a man who combined profound personal loyalty with distaste for any kind of emotional grandstanding." Dust jacket has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, small shallow bump on rear panel.

160 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive exploration of Blumenfeld's work, (this book) forms a uniquely detailed study of her development. Dividing her sculpture into eight themed chapters, it concentrates on the major ideas and technical concerns that have preoccupied the artist from the beginning: Two Sides of a Woman; Creation; Metamorphosis; Options; Shadow Figures; Dreams; Souls; and, finally, Mythology. Early and recent works are illustrated side by side, highlighting the aesthetic and conceptual growth which has earned her respect from critics and collectors throughout Europe and the United States. (Upson's) text illuminates Blumenfeld's intense working methods and reveals how her life - divided between Italy, where she works, England, where she now lives, and the United States, where she was born - contributes to her creativity. Each chapter provides an introduction to the individual pieces, a review of Blumenfeld's contribution to twentieth-century sculpture, and concludes with Blumenfeld's own thought-provoking comments on her work."
