211 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "The first section gives a detailed account of chronometer testing for wristwatches in Europe, primarily Swi tzerland. Information about testing methods, procedures, and guidelines, as well as participating makers, are based on research from the yearly reports of Swiss testing agencies between 1925 and present, and from the Swiss Observatories' reports ke pt between 1941 and 1967. The second part presents chronometer wristwatches by known makers each of which has been tested according to the guidelines of Swiss testing agencies. The types of errors found in the testing process and their possible reasons are pointed out. Follwing the theoretic-scientific presentation of the different testing methods, the reader learns the practical side of chronometer testing. At the end, the reader will want to test his own chronometer wristwatch. (A)lso will teach the collector to distinguish chronometer wristwatches and non-chronometer wristwatches from various countries. In addition to the many photographs in the illustration section, a list of over 300 Swiss watch manufacturers who made chronome ter wristwatches will be very useful. The reader also receives hints about fakes and forgeries." A heavy book which may require extra postage depending on destination. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE AGE OF CHANGE, 1770-1870: DOCUMENTS IN SOCIAL HISTORY., Ward, J.T.
83 Ward, J.T. THE AGE OF CHANGE, 1770-1870: DOCUMENTS IN SOCIAL HISTORY.
London Adam and Charles Black 1975 0713615761 / 9780713615760 First Edition Good+ Very Good -
199 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Between 1770 and 1870 Britain underwent a series of revolutions: agricultural, industrial, political and social. The whole country and the whole population, whether urban or rural, were affected to some extent by the far-reaching changes of this period and their legacy still has its influence in Britain today. This book is an enlightened selection of extracts from contemporary writings (including Anthony Trollope's novels and Royal Commission Reports as well as letters and diaries) charting the changing attitudes, policies and achievements of this important century in the growth of our modern industrial society. There are sections devoted to rural life, urban and industrial life, changes in transport, social policies and religious questions. John Ward, who is Professor of Modern History at the University of Strathclyde, has compiled a scholarly, and entertaining, picture of social life in Britain during a time of social change which will be of value to anyone with a personal or professional interest in the period." Subjects covered include: Free trade; Class conflicts; High society; The Army; Rural Poor; Landownership, Turnpikes; Canals; Sunday trains; Manchester; Leeds; Birmingham; Bardford; Trade unionism; Poor Law; Factory reform; Public health; Education; Life in the Mines; Religion; etc. Some random text highlited in yellow - up to page 41, slight wrinkling at bottom of spine. STORIES OF FAMOUS REGIMENTS., Warner, Philip.
84 Warner, Philip. STORIES OF FAMOUS REGIMENTS.
Arthur Baker, London, (1975).
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps, photos, reproductions. "...drawing upon contemporary diaries and reports of campaigns ranging from the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea, South Africa and India to the First and Second World Wars, (the author) has recreated some of the many acts of heroism performed by the British soldier. Futile though some of them may have eventually proved, such as the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade and the tragic stand at Maiwand, there is no doubting the outstanding courage of their perpetrators. The words of men who were present at the scenes of conflict described here, successful or otherwise, speak more clearly and movingly than any second hand account." Previous owner's name/date on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has minor edge wear. VG+/VG+

UNFINISHED DREAMS: COMMUNITY HEALING AND THE REALITY OF ABORIGINAL SELF-GOVERNMENT., Warry, Wayne.
85 Warry, Wayne. UNFINISHED DREAMS: COMMUNITY HEALING AND THE REALITY OF ABORIGINAL SELF-GOVERNMENT.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1998.
323 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0802079172 "In this book Wayne Warry argues that self-government can be realized only when individuals are secure in their cultural identity and can contribute to the transformation of their communities. (He) draws on his reasearch among Nishnawbe communities, as well as on the reports and recommendations of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Case studies are used to illustrated the proceses of community development and cultural revitalization that are essential precursors to self-government. Warry's notion of 'community healing' involves efforts to rebuild the human foundations for self-governing Aboriginal societies. The book analyses key areas such as health care and the judicial and political systems where Aboriginal peoples are engaged in practical everyday struggles to improve their communities. Central to these Aboriginal approaches to change is the need for holistic solutions to complex social problems. The sear c h f o r t h ese solutions is set against the broader political environment, which includes Euro-Canadian assumptions, government, policy, and post-colonial practices. (It) also addresses the nature of applied social scientific research in Abori gi na l c om mu n it ie s and the need for collaborative, culturally appropriate research methods." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing. Very Good+
