GREENBANK: COUNTRY MATTERS IN 19TH CENTURY ONTARIO., Graham, W.H.
61 Graham, W.H. GREENBANK: COUNTRY MATTERS IN 19TH CENTURY ONTARIO.
Broadview Press, (Peterborough, Ont., 1988).
326 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Using the fascinating histories of four neighbouring farms as its focus, (this) book broadens to explore all aspects of the social and economic history of rural Ontario over the hundred years 1835 to 1935. It details the development of agriculture and the decline in pioneer energy in the third and fourth generations; it describes the creation of a system of formal education from scratch; it brings to life the sports, music and other forms of 19th century Ontario recreation; and captures the flavour of daily custom and routine. A recurring theme is the harsh ethic of evangelicalism, which surfaced dramatically in the temperance movement and in attitudes toward entertainment, sex, and the place of women in society. All this is woven in with the often amusing, often deeply moving stories of the remarkable individuals who inhabited the microcosm of Greenbank." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, three very small corner creases, minor rubbing, corner crease on rear cover with migration into last few pages, spine flat and uncreased. VG

62 Grauerholz, Angela. APORIA: A BOOK OF LANDSCAPES.
Oakville, Ontario Oakville Galleries 1995 0921027559 / 9780921027553 Soft Cover Very Good Good
Unpaginated, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Opaque printed mylar dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." Book is cocked, minor soiling marks on bottom of textblock. Dust jacket has a few small chips and creases, 2" tears at top of flap-folds, small soiling mark at top corner of front panel very light browning to spine/hinges.

London Macdonald 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Peter Endsleigh Castle.
132 pp, 10" H. "(Describes) the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes, the little Gloster Gladiator, which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters, the Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair, which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen, the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa, and its successor, the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which, but for ministerial muddle and confusion, would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. These and many other fighters, both successful and unsuccessful, but all 'famous', are surveyed with hundreds of rare photographs, highly detailed full-page tone drawings by Peter Endsleigh Castle, and comparative side views of the many variants of each aircraft by Dennis I. Punnett." Very small bump at top of spine, very small dent/tear on spine near rear hinge, areas of minor browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small area of delamination at top of front hinge, one small edge tear archivally taped.

178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." "Transformed almost overnight from third mate on a tanker into a Royal Naval Reserve lieutenant, Murdoch Murray Magnusson found that with 1939 drawing to a close ne ither he nor the war itself seemed to be getting anywhere. But then a summons to London from Admiral Sir James Cockayne radically changed all that. The admiral wanted to know about Magnusson's knowledge of certain Scandinavian languages a n d a b o u t his apprenticeship in sail. The Navy needed information about German raiders and blockade runners operating in northern waters, and one of the places to get it was the neutral port of Narvik. Magnusson was to go there in a windjamm er : t he b ar qu e ' Oulu' which, furthermore, was to sail under false colours. On arrival, he was startled to find that 'Oulu' was not the only windjammer in the northern fjord. Soon he and the crew of the old sailing ship were to play a key ro le in t he his tor ic re sc ue of British prisoners from the notorious prison-ship 'Altmark', and then to plunge into the maelstrom of the German invasion of Norway...." Shambhala, Boston, 2003, Ist printing.

"In just 196 short aphorisms, this classic work of Indian philosophy spells out succinctly how the mind works, and how it is possible to use the mind to attain liberation. A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813., Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover.
71 Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover. A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813.
Heinemann, London, (1979), first edition.
181 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w reproductions, maps, battle plans. "George Hennell, born about 1785 the son of a Coventry ribbon manufacturer and tradesman, joined Wellington's army in the Peninsula as a Volunteer, was commissioned in the field in the Forty-third Light Infantry, and served through the campaigns of 1812-13. Of his letters home twenty-six (all but two of them unpublished) survive, and these have been edited by the historian Michael Glover with a ge neral introduction, summaries of the events in the campaign covered by the letters, notes and appendices. The discovery of the letters represents a considerable find. Hennell is particularly good at conveying the detail of everyday life i n t h e f i e ld and camp and from his vivid pen the reader can gain a first-hand impression of what it was like to be a young officer on active service more than a century and a half ago. He is exceptional as a reporter because he not only rec ou nt s e ve nt s a s th ey happen but tries to analyse his own reactions to the dangers and horrors through which he is passing. He sometimes illustrated his letters with diagrams and fluent sketches, several of which are reproduced in this book . Hen ne ll' s s tor y beg in s d ramatically in the thick of the action when as a raw recruit armed only with a letter of introduction to General Picton he joins the British camp just two days before the bloody storming of the citadel of Badajoz. It end s w ith the vict or ious ar my d escending the Pyrenees to invade the soil of France shortly before the fall of Napoleon." Joynt, V.C.) begins by outlining the Australian role in the events of March, April and May 1918, when the British 2nd and 5th Armies were near collapse following the German Spring Offensive. Colonel Joynt's personal diary covering the period January to August 1918, here published in full, adds immediacy to the account of these days...gives the most vivid and accurate picture of the situation at this time, so far as the Ist (Australian) Division was concerned in it. 76 Judd, David W. Illustrations from drawings by Lieut. L.C. Mix. THE STORY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD N.Y.S. VOLS: OR TWO YEARS CAMPAIGNING IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND.
mBenton & Andrews, Rochester, 1864, Ist edition.
349 pp, + 76 pp. (Appendices) + ads, small 8vo, hard cover (dark green boards with embossed floral design at corners, gilt decoration - sabre, rifle and wreath - on front cover, repeated on rear cover without gilt) - no dust jacket. B&w illustrations, including tissue-covered frontispiece. "This volume does not propose to review the causes, rise and progress of the unhappy civil strife, which for more than two years has rent our land; neither is it designed to describe all the operations which have marked the war in the single department of Virginia and Maryland. It aims merely, as the title page indicates, at giving a narrative of one of the many Regiments which the Empire State has sent into the field, together with a description of the various campaigns in which it participated...The plan, as will readily be seen, comprises separate sketches of each company until merged into the Regiment; the regimental history from the period of its organization at Elmira in May, 1861, until its return from the war, May, 1863; brief biographies of the various officers, and muster rolls of the men...A double interest attaches to the numerous engravings which embellish the volume, from the fact that instead of being gotten up to ordr, they were 'drawn on the spot' by a skilful artist - an officer of the Regiment - who participated in all the scenes through which it passed. They constitute in themselves a pictorial history of the first two years of the Eastern campaign." The Regiment participated in the battles of Williamsburg, Mechanicsville, Golden's Farm, Second Mechanicsville, Gaines' Farm, Malvern, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Heights among others. Interior - pages browning lightly, free front endpaper missing, ghost signature on preliminary, light scattered foxing on rear endpapers, erased pencil numbers on rear pastedown, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - wear at corners, cloth missing from top edge of spine, bottom edge is fraying but basically all there, slight fading to spine color, protected in mylar sleeve. G+
