NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809., Deane, Anthony.
61 Deane, Anthony. NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809.
London Caxton 2003 184067430X / 9781840674309 Reprint Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Geoff Hunt cover art.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, two small faint scratches on rear panel.

449 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Northrop Frye was one of the most influential critics of the twentieth century. His output was prodigious: his publications include thirty-eight books and monographs, nearly 300 essays and articles, and some 15 reviews and miscellaneous pieces. His reputation is international: he has been the subject of numerous books, a forthcoming biography, and thirty doctoral dissertations from universities as far-flung as Freiburg, Oxford, and Texas. With this bibliography, the massive body of work by and about Frye is now made readily accessible for the first time. More than 2500 entries are included, organized in a practical and straightforward structure. Part One, covering works by Frye, is arranged in chronological order. Part Two, which deals with secondary sources, is presented in alphabetical order. (The author) has provided ample notation for the many hundreds of entries; with the primary sources, he has quoted from Frye's own words as far as possible to illuminate the tone as well as the content." Minor soiling to top/bottom edges of text block, one small and one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

180 pp, square small 4to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0879389206 Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "The Bomber Command was the heart of the US Army Air Force's operations against Nazi Germany in World War I I. At its peak, the USAAF boasted 2,411,294 men and women in uniform with 230,000 aircraft flown by 193,440 pilots. And statistically, there was no more dangerous place to be in World War II than in a bomber over Germany. (This book) tells th e s t ory of the USAAF in the European and Mediterranean Theaters during World War II. But instead of another gray history of armies and campaigns, (it) relives the color of the operations both in terms of first-person accounts and anecdotes as we ll as w ith original World War II color photography of the events." 75 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1979, first edition.
255 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340234334 " 'Schwerttrager!' It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. Through it all the mystery behind 'Schwerttrager' lure s h im on unt il he sta kes his car eer and his life in a desperate attempt to solve it." Faint cigarette odor. 79 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.

Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before.
