67 Mosier, John. THE MYTH OF THE GREAT WAR: A NEW MILITARY HISTORY OF WORLD WAR I
New York HarperCollins 2001 0060196769 / 9780060196769 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w maps. "Based on a decade of research into previously unused French and German sources, (this book) shows what actually happened at the front as the participants perceived it at the time, as opposed to what French and British commanders and governments claimed. John Mosier, who visited all the major battlefields, describes and analyzes campaigns that are routinely neglected or ignored and shows why conventional accounts of such major battles as Verdun are incorrect. He explains how German tactics, weapons, training and leadership were consistently superior, and why the endless, ineffective attacks of the French and British with inferior weapons and battle tactics of the previous century resulted in mindless slaughter and defeat. Mosier also discusses the major military leaders on both sides - including Joffre, Petain, Foch, Gallieni, French, Haig, Wilson, Moltke, Ludendorff, Falkenhayn, Mudra, and Pershing. The French and British military controlled, suppressed, and manipulated all battlefield reports. German losses were magnified; failures became successes, defeats victories. Allied intelligence was grossly inaccurate and inadequate, and the result was a distorted picture of what was really happening. Absorbing and persuasive, 'The Myth of the Great War' is a striking new assessment of the military realities of World War I." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint finger print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, minor rubbing.

Poole Blandford Press 1983 0713713925 / 9780713713923 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
227 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "(T)here is an essential uniformity of armament, organization, tactics and purpose without which individual battalions could not act together effectively. It is this aspect (of the British Infantry) with which Frederick Myatt is most concerned. The English Civil War saw the first formation of a professional standing army in Britain. This book chronicles 300 years of the major campaigns, successes and failures of the British Infantry and also charts the organizational and tactical changes that the Infantry underwent. The Seven Years War, the Peninsular War, the South African War and the two World Wars are described in considerable detail. A recurring theme is the running down of the Infantry after each campaign, often leaving it unable to cope with the demands of an expanding Empire and the threats to its security. The author also highlights the importance of the American War of Independence, the various colonial wars of the nineteenth century and the South African War - wars fought against unconventional enemies and requiring radical changes in tactics and regimental structure. Another important aspect in the Infantry's development was the systematic introduction of its weapons - the bayonet, the flintlock musket, the rifle, the machine gun and the mortar. These changed the shape of the Infantry, eventually producing one of the finest fighting corps in the world." Place, date and initials written in ink on front free endpaper; minor soiling on top of text block and at top of front pastedown; light waviness to fore-edge of text block; tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light rubbing, small dent on spine, a series of light line indentations on front panel, very light edge wrinkling.

"To find the origin of the Gurkha soldier we must go back to the year 1814 - a year in which the British Army fought a war agaisnt one of the toughest enem ies it had ever encountered, before or since: the Gurkhas. Since that year, when they were finally forced to unwilling subjection, the Gurkhas have been 'on our side' in every war fought by Great Britain. One regiment of Gurkhas became te n , a n d i n the latter part of the nineteenth century they fought shoulder to shoulder with British soldiers at Bhurtpore, in the Sikh War, in the Indian Mutiny and the Afghan War. In the First World War, Gurkha battalions were to be found wh er ev e r th e f ig ht ing was most deadly: in France, at Gallipoli, in Palestine and Mesopotamia. For Gurkha regiments there was no 'peacetime' in its literal sense between the two world wars, for they constantly stood watch on India's North-West Fro nti er . An d in th e S econd World War Nepal sent nearly a quarter of a million men to fight against Germany and Japan. The end of the war against Japan brought no peace to the Far East; it also produced the partition of India and the inevit able run dow n of t he In dian Arm y Gurkha regiments. Great Britain retained the 2nd, 6th, 7th and 10th Gurkha Rifles, while the remaining six regiments remained in the newly consituted Indian Army. Brigadier 'Birdie' Smith - himself a distin guish ed an d mu ch deco rat ed G urkha offi cer - tells the story of these four regiments, now known as Britain's Brigade of Gurkhas. It is a story of gallantry in battle, of unswerving loyalty and fortitude." "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West.
