PEACEKEEPER: THE ROAD TO SARAJEVO., MacKenzie, Lewis.
61 MacKenzie, Lewis. PEACEKEEPER: THE ROAD TO SARAJEVO.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1993 155054098X / 9781550540987 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." Slight bump at bottom of spine with a tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor crease at bottom of front flap.

Phonix House, London, (1962), first edition.

"...(written) for older children who would like to hear about their forefathers and the people who made and built the places they see around them. In 'The Book of the Village' we read the story of the growth of the pattern and ways of our villages, from Saxon to our own times, from the ox-plough to the combine harvester, and from the darkling hills and forests of the earliest farmers to the settled and tidy England of today. We learn about the early village and its lord of the manor, the village before factories and mass production killed cottage crafts, of the squire, of the parson - and the squarson - of the high farming of the eighteenth century, of Coke of Norfolk; Jethro Tull, and Turnip Townshend; of the enclosing and stealing of common land, and of the village today." 64 Martin, Gwen L. GESNER'S DREAM: THE TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS OF EARLY MINING IN NEW BRUNSWICK.
Fredericton, New Brunswick Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum 2003 1894475461 / 9781894475464 Soft Cover Very Good+
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, reproductions - colour maps. Inscribed by author on half title page. "Whenever you read this book, whether by day or by night, miners are at work in New Brunswick. Their underground world is magical and terrifying. Caverns traced by fragile points of light recede into utter blackness, and the stone walls expose swirls of rock frozen in three dimensions. Overhead are vaulted ceilings, silent and beautiful as a Gothic cathedral. The heritage of New Brunswick mining reaches back over three action-packed centuries. Gypsum smugglers sailed down the Bay of Fundy by midnight. Mine developers battled each other using fists in the boardroom and pisols in the field. Many prospectors died without making a dime, while others lost their rightful holdings at gunpoint. And a lucky or skillful few hit the jackpot. The romantic, lively and ultimately triumphant tale of mining in New Brunswick is revealed here for the first time, richly illustrated with more than 140 historical photographs gathered from archives and attics across the province." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very small crease at fore-edge of front cover.

66 Matthews, John, editor/compiler. Foreword by Philip Carr-Gomm. (P.W. Joyce, J.A. MacCulloch, Julius Pokorny, T. Rice Holmes, Lewis Spence, John Toland, Edward Davies, Godfrey Higgins, Algernon Herbert, W.A. Winwood Read, Iolo Morgannwg, et al. THE DRUID SOURCEBOOK: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE PRESENT DAY. (SOURCEBOOK.)
London Brockhampton 1998 1860198422 / 9781860198427 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
384 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "The Druids have long been misrepresented and misunderstood. The only true records that survive from when the Druids originally flourished are those of the classical writers, who were completely opposed to Druids and their practices. Julius Caesar wrote disparagingly about them and sought to destroy them. The historical reality is that Druidism and early Christianity lived side by side for a long period, and a considerable amount of Druid philosophy was absorbed into Christianity itself. Whether Druidism is regarded as a Celtic priesthood in origin and name, or a religion, it is clear that Druids and Druidism were important aspects of the life of the early European peoples, especially in Britain. In this comprehensive and brilliantly researched book, John Matthews presents a cross-section through the diverse layers of Druid history and custom. Using rare sources - often lost or forgotten texts and translations - he shows how various aspects of Druidism originated and how these contributed to practices we see today. A Druid himself, (he) has expert knowledge and avoids the popular misinterpretation of Druidism as 'wanting to live in the past'. Instead, this book reveals the truth about Druidism, its ideas and customs, and makes a vital contribution to current interest in the Druids." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, very minor eubbing on boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

THE BATTLE OF FRANCE., Maurois, Andre. Translated from the French by F.R. Ludman. Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone.
67 Maurois, Andre. Translated from the French by F.R. Ludman. Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. THE BATTLE OF FRANCE.
John Lane, The Bodley Head, London, (1940), Ist edition.
210 pp + ads, 8vo (8 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 8 b&w plates by Edward Ardizzone. "The first part...is made up of sketches of the B.E.F. which were published in Paris each week from the beginning of November (1939). I had been asked by the Army Council to acompany the British forces as French official eye-witness. I was delighted to have the opportunity of joining my old friends again. We were full of hope. I spent at G.H.Q., and with the armies, several happy months. When I read what I wrote then, in perfect good faith, I wonder why and how we did not realize at once that our numbers were too small, our equipment scanty, our defence inadequate. As a matter of fact, we did realize it from time to time, but there was aconspiracy of optimism...If these sketches are now still worth reading, it will be mainly because of their significant omissions. The second part of this book is a diary of The Thirty Days War. Most of it was written, not for publication, but for my self. It is not perhaps the whole truth, but all of its true - too terribly true." Light browning to endpapers, moderate rubbing to cloth, light fading to top/bottom edges of spine, a few tiny soiling specks on boards. Dust jacket is worn with a few small tears and chips, is clipped at all flap corners, heavy edge wear, browning, light soiling, old tape repairs on inside surface, now in a mylar sleeve. G/Poor

BINARY OPPOSITION BETWEEN ABORIGINAL AND NON-ABORIGINAL HOLISTIC METHODS IMPEDES SUCCESS IN NATIVE LITERACY., McClain, Karen B. (Inscribed)
68 McClain, Karen B. (Inscribed) BINARY OPPOSITION BETWEEN ABORIGINAL AND NON-ABORIGINAL HOLISTIC METHODS IMPEDES SUCCESS IN NATIVE LITERACY.
N.P. Self-published 2005 Hard Cover Near Fine No Jacket
112 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H), simulated dark brown leather covers with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper. This is a bound thesis, printed on one side of each leaf. "This thesis presents original, holistic Aboriginal socialization as the foundation of literacy for the Aboriginal population. A definition representing the worldview and reality of Aboriginal society is offered to specifically meet the literacy needs of the Aboriginal community. Intergenerational trauma presented as the origin of several levels of underlying needs in the Aboriginal community clarifies the call for literacy training that will guide the individual to read their history and 'read situations, social structures and social locations' to enable better access to mainstream institutions and to build success and identity. Literacy is discussed in the context of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University program, under which Native literacy practitioners have disclosed policy that does not represent Aboriginal stakeholders."

EINSTEIN WROTE BACK: MY LIFE IN PHYSICS., Moffat, John W.
70 Moffat, John W. EINSTEIN WROTE BACK: MY LIFE IN PHYSICS.
Toronto Thomas Allen 2010 0887626157 / 9780887626159 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
244 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "John W. Moffat was a poor student of math and science. That is, until he read Einstein's famous paper on general relativity. Realizing instantly that he had an unusual and unexplained aptitude for understanding the complex physics described in the paper, Moffat wrote a letter to Einstein that would change the course of his life. Einstein replied to Moffat and they exchanged a series of letters in which they discussed the theory of general relativity and Einstein's current work on unified field theory. Moffat met with Einstein's longtime colleague, the legendary Niels Bohr, at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Astonished by the young man's self-taught knowledge of theoretical physics, Bohr directed Moffat to Britain, where, after interviews with influential physicists including Erwin Schrodinger, he was enrolled in the graduate physics program at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1958, Moffat was the first student in the College's more than 400-year history to earn a physics PhD without a prior undergraduate degree. Moffat and Einstein did not continue their correspondence, as the great man died shortly after Moffat began his studies. However, Moffat continued, over the next fifty years, to modify and expand on Einstein's theory of gravity. (This book) tells the story of Moffat's unusual entry into the world of academia and documents his career at the frontlines of twentieth-century physics as he worked and associated with some of the greatest minds in scientific history. Taking readers inside the classrooms and minds of these 'giants' of modern science, Moffat affectionately exposes the foibles and eccentricities of these great men, as they worked on the revolutionary ideas that, today, are the very foundation of modern physics and cosmology." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN., Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan)
71 Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan) LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405943 / 9780195405941 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
562 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Marshall McLuahn (1911-1980) became one of the most famous men of the sixties and seventies and the involuntary founder of an unofficial cult. His reputation as a communications theorist was established by two of many books. 'The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man' (1962) explains how society and human psychology were changed when pre-literate oral culture was supplanted with the invention of the phonetic alphabet and a manuscript culture gave way to the Gutenberg era of movable type, the printing press, and mass-produced books. 'Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man' (1964), McLuhan's most widely read book, explores the electronic age and its effects on individuals and society. The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussions of ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electronic age they lived in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his staggering knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe. The letters are organized in three sections, each with a period introduction: 1931-1936 takes McLuhan through the University of Manitoba and Cambridge University. 1936-1946 covers one year's teaching at the University of Wisconsin; two years at Saint Louis University; one year, with his bride, at Cambridge for work on his Ph.D.; four more years at Saint Louis; and two at Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. This period includes many letters to Wyndham Lewis. The last section begins in 1946, when McLuhan joined the staff of St Michael's College, University of Toronto. (Two years later he began a long correspondence with Ezra Pound.) Covering the period of McLuhan's fame, it ends in September 1979 with a letter to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, written shortly before McLuhan suffered a stroke that rendered him speechless. This rich and varied collection of over 450 letters, by a man whose thought exerted a singular influence throughout the western world, is an important contribution to the cultural history of the twentieth century." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

202 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions."(A) lighthearted but true-to-life account of Canadian home front living during the war years. When teenaged boys put on uniforms and sailed, flew, and marched off to fight in the Second World War, the teenaged girls they left behind them were in uniform too: a Sloppy Joe sweater, a string of pearls, skirt, bobbysox, and saddleshoes. Meet Mary, one of those girls in a Sloppy Joe sweater; her best friend Cath, and their friends; and follow their fortunes through these six significant years in history that paralleled six of the most formative years of their lives. Through Mary you will learn what they were like; how they passed their time as they waited for the boys to come home; their code of manners and mores; what they talked about at their 'hen parties'; the music and radio programs they listened to; the movies they watched; the books and magazines they read; their fashion 'fads'; their humour; and their contribution to the 'war effort'.
