St James' Cathedral / Toronto University Press, Toronto, 1998.
326 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802047149 B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings, plans, elevations. "St James' Cathedral can justly be called the Mother Church of the city of Toronto as well as of the Anglican diocese centred there. Its congregation perpetuates one that began worshipping in Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe's tent at the very founding of the town of York in 1793. Its grounds were set aside for a place of worship in 1797, and the wooden church tha t o p ened there ten years later was the first to be built in the town. Four successive Anglican churches have stood on this site, which is now in the heart of downtown Toronto. This history, commissioned as part of St James' 200th-anniversary ce le b ra ti ons in 1996-7, represents a collaboration by seven respected amateur and professional historians. It is lavishly illustrated with over one hundred pictures from the cathedral's own archives and the holdings of other institutions, as well as e igh t p ages of specially commissioned colour plates. Alongside a general history of the church as both parish and cathedral and its ministry to the community through two centuries, there are chapters specially treating the architecture of t he s ucc essi ve b uildings and the development of St James' renowned music and liturgy. This book will appeal not only to students of religious, cultural, and architectural history but to all who take an interest in Toronto's heritage, and Canada' s." F our page leaves with tiny crease at top corner. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Near Fine/Very Goo d+

65 Berger, Howard, introduction. TORONTO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE.
B. Mitchell, Godalming, Surrey, 1989.
96 pp, 4to (11 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0886655811 Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "From its modest importance in the late 1960s, Toronto has developed into one of the world's greatest financial and communications capitals. 'Toronto' chronicles the city's rise to corporate power by outlining the large-scale development of the downtown core, which spawned Bay Street as Canada's answer to Wall Street. Tracing Toronto's history from its humble beginnings as a fur-trading post in the 1600s, the following pages detail the construction of Toronto's important rapid-transit system, which features one of the world's most extensive subway lines, and looks at the city's exciting Harbourfront development. From the world-renowned Canadian National Exhibition and the Roy Thomson Hall to the man-made islands of Ontario Place and the SkyDome, stunning colour photography and an authoritative text portray Toronto as the ever-growing metropolis it truly is. Canada's largest city has come a long way in a short time. 'Toronto' shows you exactly how far and how fast." Light waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light browning to panels. 66 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Bowman was fighting in a war, but then on Ap ril 23, 1945, David encountered an unexpected and terrible twist of events that changed his life forever. After a fairly routine enemy target attack on a munitions dump near Rangoon, Burma, his Liberator aircraft was making its way back across t h e Bay of Bengal, bringing David and his comrades back to home base for a debriefing and a beer. Ten miles from the shores of Burma, David suddenly heard his skipper say these chilling words: 'Dinghy! Dinghy! Prepare for ditching.' David Bow ma n, i n his easy, humourous style, shares his true life story experiences of that fateful day in 1945 and the days following. 310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman .
