KING OF THE CASTLE. THE MAKING OF A DYNASTY: SEAGRAM'S AND THE BRONFMAN EMPIRE., Newman, Peter C.
61 Newman, Peter C. KING OF THE CASTLE. THE MAKING OF A DYNASTY: SEAGRAM'S AND THE BRONFMAN EMPIRE.
New York Atheneum Books for Young Readers 1979 0689109636 / 9780689109638 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
304 pp, 9 1/2" H. "It is one of the world's great fortunes, the empire founded by Sam Bronfman and carried on through his family, a kingdom worth more than $7 billion nurtured on bootleg alcohol and sustained through decades of deals, scandals, legal explosions and interfamily warfare. At its heart is the Seagram Company Ltd., the world's largest distilling operation, responsible for more than one million bottles of liquor per day sold in the U.S. alone, but it also reaches far beyond that - to oil companies, hotels, mines, factories and real estate all over the world." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor bump to top edge of both boards, minor fading at top/bottom edges of boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small tear archivally taped.

62 Nichol, Eric, editor. (Francis Dickens.) DICKENS OF THE MOUNTED: THE ASTONISHING LONG-LOST LETTERS OF INSPECTOR F. DICKENS NWMP, 1874-1886.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771068077 / 9780771068072 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map on front endpapers, reproductions of letters on rear endpapers. "Few people know that Charles Dickens had a son who served in the North-West Mounted Police in the days when the Canadian West was wild. Those historians who mention his twelve years in the force (1874-1886) dismiss him as a round peg in a square hole, a fat, stammering, slightly deaf, alcoholic Englishman with a tendency to fall off his horse in the course of tense confrontations with Indian warriors. These recently discovered letters home to England set the record straight, and reveal the true Dickens. Not only do these letters tell us much about the Dickens family, even to the point of parodying 'Pa's' purple prose, they also tell us a great deal about early Canada as Dickens saw it in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg, and in forts all across the prairies. Dickens met everyone worth meeting in the West - including Crowfoot, Gabriel Dumont, Sam Steele, Jerry Potts, and Louis Riel - and even encountered famous visitors such as Sitting Bull, the Governor General, and Col. Harry Flashman (whom he calls 'a humbug'). And while he may have blotted his copy-book surrendering Fort Pitt to Riel's rebels, we learn here that he deserves credit for inspiring the Mounties' Musical Ride and the phrase 'a Mountie always gets his man'. Editor Nichol's wonderful skills have brought this man so alive that when we part from Frank Dickens at the end of the book, we do so with the sense of having lost a friend." Small area of light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has tiny dent on rear panel, very minor edge wrinkling.

63 Nish, Cameron; Waite, P.B.; Brown, R.C.; Prang, M.E., editors. CANADIAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS SERIES - 3 VOLUME SET. VOLUME I. THE FRENCH REGIME. VOLUME II. PRE-CONFEDERATION. VOLUME III. CONFEDERATION TO 1949.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1965 Very Good Good
Three volume set - volumes I & III are hard covers in dust jackets, volume II is soft cover. Volume I: The French Regime - 176 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - "(C)ontains a fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by individuals involved in the founding and settling of Canada. Through their own words these men chronicle their ambitions, deeds, and frustrations, from the time of Jacques Cartier's first voyage of exploration in 1534 to the surrender of Montreal to the British in 1760. Consisting mostly of translations from the original French, this book of documents was compiled with the purpose of placing an emphasis on the social and economic aspects of life during the French Regime in Canada." Volume II: Pre-Confederation - 242 pp, soft cover, 8 3/4" H - "(C)overs the history of British North America from the end of the French regime to 1867. Thus the history of Nova Scotia begins with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713; that of Canada with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. New-foundland I have commenced, a little arbitrarily, in 1713; for the Hudson's Bay Company and the West I have included the Charter of 1670. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick begin with their official establishment as provinces carved out of the old Province of Nova Scotia, in 1769 and 1784 respect-ively. The basic element in the story illustrated in this book is preforce political and constitutional history (but) at the same time I have tried to present the way various societies in British North America lived and worked." Volume III: Confederation to 1949 - 334 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - (A) fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by some of the individuals who were actively involved in the events that led from consolidation of Confederation to Canada in the era of Post World War II. (It) indicates how Confederation was consolidated between 1967 and 1896. The emergence of modern Canada up to 1914 is then discussed. The First World War and the new economy that followed it then leads into the depression, the Second World War and industrialism. In the last part, external affairs are traced from 1914 on and Canada's international position is evaluated." Volume I has small ghost sticker mark on free front endpaper, very light browning on free endpapers, light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, small edge chips and tears, small area of surface paper loss on rear panel, slight fading to spine color, light rubbing, protected in a mylar sleeve. Throughout Marlborough's campaigns they distinguished themselve s as steady, reliable fighting troops, and by the end had earned themselves five battle-honours. The long list of foreign stations includes Canada, America, India, Chitral, South Africa, where the Regiment's mounted infantry company played a l a r g e part in the final surrender of the Boers; and so up to the Great War. Twenty-two battalions were raised by the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, battalions who saw action from Flanders to Gallipoli, from Egypt to Jerusalem. T h e S ec on d Wa r b rought the Regiment glory at Dunkirk, in Singapore they lost a whole battalion, their skill as part of General Orde Wingate's Chindits was a source of bewilderment to the enemy; from North Africa to Italy they were an omnipresen t me na ce to wh oev er t ried to stop them. These, then, are the men of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, brave, thorough and skilled, and this book is worthy of them." Includes music of the Regimental March. ARMIES AND WARFARE IN THE MIDDLE AGES: THE ENGLISH EXPERIENCE., Prestwich, Michael.
66 Prestwich, Michael. ARMIES AND WARFARE IN THE MIDDLE AGES: THE ENGLISH EXPERIENCE.
New Haven Yale University Press 1996 0300064527 / 9780300064520 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
396 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions, maps. "(R)e-creates the real experience of medieval warfare, examining how men of all ranks of society were recruited, how troops were fed, supplied and deployed, the development of new weapons, and the structures of military command. (The author) challenges many common assumptions about medieval warfare. He shows that medieval commanders were capable of far more sophisticated strategy than is usually assumed: spies were an important part of the machinery of war, and the destruction of crops and burning of villages were part of a deliberate plan to force a foe to negotiate, rather than an indication of lack of discipline. Sieges, often lengthy and expensive, were more prevalent than physical battles. And in actual engagement the mounted knight was never as dominant as is often supposed: even in the twelfth century, many battles were won by unmounted men. Written by a leading scholar of the period and rich with anecdote and illustrations, this book will appeal to anyone interested in the social history of war in the Middle Ages." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

67 Prucha, Francis Paul. THE SWORD OF THE REPUBLIC: THE UNITED STATES ARMY ON THE FRONTIER, 1783-1846.
Macmillan, (Toronto, 1969).
442 pp, large 8vo (9 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w maps, plates. "....the story of federal troops called up to enforce paper possession with physical occupation when treaty and purchase opened up the region from the Appalachians west to the Mississippi and the vast new frontiers in the Louisiana Territory. The duties of these soldiers were to protect the settlers and to establish a military presence that maintained American rights with honor in the face of Indian intransigence and British and Spanish scheming. These soldiers, in accomplishing their mission, became farmers, roadbuilders, scientists, and lumbermen: pioneers of the new West. At Fallen Timbers, Tippecanoe, and the Thames, the federal military forces met the early challenge from the Indian nations and their British allies. Military control of strategic points on the Great Lakes and western rivers enforced American control of the fur trade. Army endeavors shored up crumbling territorial edges where Spanish and British officials or traders weakened American power. (This book) recounts vividly the Blackhawk War and the Florida War. It details the construction of western forts and tells the tragic story of the removal of Indians from the East. It is a chronicle of the transition from wilderness to hard-core settlement." Two imprints of previous owners stamp on free front endpaper, light browning to fore-edge of textblock, light wrink ling at top/bottom of spine, light waviness in cloth at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edge wear, light to moderate edge wrinkling, small tear with creases at top of rear panel, tiny tear at top of spine, small closed puncture on front hinge, crease down rear flap, light rubbing. 69 Reeman, Douglas. (a.k.a. Alexander Kent.) WINGED ESCORT
London Hutchinson 1975 0091247403 / 9780091247409 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Chris Mayger, cover art.
286 pp, 8 3/4" H. Military fiction. "During the Second World War, the losses of ships and men in Allied convoys rose to such proportions that sinkings often far outpaced replacements. As the toll of ships mounted, the escort carrier was born. She had the hull of an uncompleted merchant ship, but had a flight deck and upperworks of a conventional carrier. These makeshift vessels, single-screwed and with only wooden flight-decks to protect them from dive-bombers, performed miracles in every theatre of war. This is the story of one of them, HMS Growler, seen through the eyes of Tim Rowan, a naval pilot - a story which takes Growler through the long drawn out misery of Russian convoys to the terrifying onslaught of Japanese Kamikaze in the Indian Ocean." Dust jacket has light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on front flap, 1" edge tear with old tape on inside, one very small edge tear with crease - archivally taped, slight browning at top edge.

Among his many accomplishments, Tyrrell discovered Canada's first dinosaur, Albertosaurus, and an Ice Age glacier he named Keewatin. He risked his own and his companions' lives charting the Dubawnt and Kazan river networks west of Hudson Bay, and rescued the maps and records of Canada's great geographer, David Thompson, from oblivion. 555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

Mr. Spettigue then takes us to the school at Rockcliffe, where recruits...undergo the rigorous training that will fit them for the strenuous duties to come...We are taken on a tour of the fabulous Identification Branch in Ottawa...We visit laboratories where scrapings of blood, samples of hair, or tiny bits of cloth are examined microscopically to provide evidence that may convict or free a suspec t; where bullets are inspected under the comparison microscope to determine whether they were fired from the same gun; where experts can tell what typewriter was used to produce an incriminating letter...we visit the Mounties on their lonely patrols of the Canadian North - taking a sick Indian to hospital, bringing news and the warmth of human companionship to isolated trappers, or tracking down a criminal across miles of wilderness. Two chapters on the Marine Division tell thrilling tales of the pursuit and capture of smugglers, and of the rescue of ships in distress...The final chapter, 'On Being a Mountie', sums up what it is to be a member of the Force, and contains the inspiring story of the work that the Mounties have voluntarily undertaken in befriending underprivileged youths and helping to combat juvenile delinquency." Budding, Stroud, 1997, reprint.
185 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840150149 "At first a spontaneous and temporary response to threats of invasion and internal rebellion, the British Volunteer became a permanent feature of military organization in the mid-Victorian era, eventually evolving into the territorial soldier of the twentieth century. Presented here is a general history of the Volunteer forces together with a detailed account of the experience of two Midland counties - Leicester s h i r e a nd Rutland. Thus both the intensely local dimension of what were initially ad hoc town and village corps, and the national significance of the British volunteer tradition are explored. Spanning three centuries, from the early eighteen th t o th e m id -twentieth century, this book charts the evolution, and the persistence, of a recurring phenomenon. It explains the exact origin and nature of the Napoleonic Volunteer Force and its mounted arm, the Yeomanry; the Victorian Rifle V olu nte er s a nd t he Territorials of the twentieth century, as well as the Home Guard of 1940 and its little-known predecessor, the Volunteer Training Corps of the First World War. Illustrated with twenty-four pages of contemporary black-and-whi te i llus tra tion s a nd set firmly in its social and political context, with careful attention paid to the organization, development and military role of the Volunteer forces, this is the story of a distinctly British institution." His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history."
