65 Nish, Cameron; Waite, P.B.; Brown, R.C.; Prang, M.E., editors. CANADIAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS SERIES - 3 VOLUME SET. VOLUME I. THE FRENCH REGIME. VOLUME II. PRE-CONFEDERATION. VOLUME III. CONFEDERATION TO 1949.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1965 Very Good Good
Three volume set - volumes I & III are hard covers in dust jackets, volume II is soft cover. Volume I: The French Regime - 176 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - "(C)ontains a fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by individuals involved in the founding and settling of Canada. Through their own words these men chronicle their ambitions, deeds, and frustrations, from the time of Jacques Cartier's first voyage of exploration in 1534 to the surrender of Montreal to the British in 1760. Consisting mostly of translations from the original French, this book of documents was compiled with the purpose of placing an emphasis on the social and economic aspects of life during the French Regime in Canada." Volume II: Pre-Confederation - 242 pp, soft cover, 8 3/4" H - "(C)overs the history of British North America from the end of the French regime to 1867. Thus the history of Nova Scotia begins with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713; that of Canada with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. New-foundland I have commenced, a little arbitrarily, in 1713; for the Hudson's Bay Company and the West I have included the Charter of 1670. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick begin with their official establishment as provinces carved out of the old Province of Nova Scotia, in 1769 and 1784 respect-ively. The basic element in the story illustrated in this book is preforce political and constitutional history (but) at the same time I have tried to present the way various societies in British North America lived and worked." Volume III: Confederation to 1949 - 334 pp, hard cover in dust jacket, 9" H - (A) fascinating collection of first-hand accounts by some of the individuals who were actively involved in the events that led from consolidation of Confederation to Canada in the era of Post World War II. (It) indicates how Confederation was consolidated between 1967 and 1896. The emergence of modern Canada up to 1914 is then discussed. The First World War and the new economy that followed it then leads into the depression, the Second World War and industrialism. In the last part, external affairs are traced from 1914 on and Canada's international position is evaluated." 67 Pereira, Michael. MOUNTAINS AND A SHORE: A JOURNEY THROUGH SOUTHERN TURKEY.
Geoffrey Bles, London, 1966, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, map. "The Mediterranean coast of Turkey is a region of quite exceptional natural beauty. It is also rich in historical remains. Greeks, Romans, Seljuks and Crusaders have all le ft their mark. The author, who speaks Turkish fluently, wanted to see southern Turkey before the Government carried out their plans to develop it for tourists, and this book is an account of his travels. It is essentially about the present: a b o u t the land as it is today and the people who live in it, but there is a strong awareness of past events and personalities. Travelling by indigenous transport, bus, 'dolmus' and donkey, and staying in Third Class hotels by preference, he t a lk ed t o pe o ple along the coast from Marmaris to Mersin and also made a detour through the Taurus Mountains to the old Seljuk capital of Konya. Fortunately the Turks are appreciative of the natural beauty of their country and it is unlikely t ha t t hey wi ll le t tourism ruin it for those who are prepared to go in search of peace and unspoilt scenery." Minor soiling on bottom of textblock, very light edge wear, tiny bump to top of rear hinge, slight fading to color on top of textbloc k. Dus t ja cket ha s mo de rate edge wear/wrinkling, tiny to small tears and chips, faint watermark at lower part of rear hinge area, some light browning at edges and on spine. Very Good/Good

68 Pern, Stephen. THE BEACH OF MORNING: A WALK IN WEST AFRICA.
London Hodder and Stoughton 1983 0340262362 / 9780340262368 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
224 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, color photographs. "In 1980 Stephen Pern went for a walk in West Africa. From the papyrus choked shores of elusive Lake Chad, Pern and his Nigerian companion, Waziri, wander south, hopscotching the international border between Nigeria and the Cameroons. The lake and the fringes of the Sahara behind them, they cross featureless savannah and baking plain until they reach the Mandara Mountains. They traverse the entire length of the hill chain until they reach the River Benue, paddling across in a dug-out canoe. For company there are two donkeys and occasional guides who lead the way to the next village but seldom beyond. The route is by tracks which avoid wheeled traffic and which connect a still traditional world, part Islamic, part pagan, where medicinal vulture's feet mingle on market stalls with transistors and strident cassettes. Between them they muster enough of the local languages to communicate with villagers and to exchange news with other travellers on the road. But when two cultures meet Stephen Pern openly admits that far from cracking each other's codes, we may not even recognise that messages are being sent. It is this frank peeling back of preconceptions and a readiness to look directly at things which give this book its freshness and immediacy. (It) is full of unexpected and sharp detail, poignant vignettes and intriguing sidelights, as befits an account of a five-hundred-mile journey taken at a human pace and at human eye level." Very minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, light creases on lower half of front panel, light rubbing.

THE NAVY AND ITS CHAPLAINS IN THE DAYS OF SAIL., Smith, Waldo E.L. Foreword by Rear Admiral H.F. Pullen.
71 Smith, Waldo E.L. Foreword by Rear Admiral H.F. Pullen. THE NAVY AND ITS CHAPLAINS IN THE DAYS OF SAIL.
Ryerson, Toronto, 1961, first edition.
197 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the days of sail the sailor met his God upon the sea, for it was here that he was most aware of Him as Ruler of the elements. Towards this God he showed respect. But religion was a limited fo rce for those whose lives were hardened by discomfort, exposure to cold and wet, wretched food, medical neglect and harsh discipline. Chaplains with insight came to understand the Navy's own moral code and used it to build upon. On some sh i p s t h e y were welcomed. On others they had to overcome indifference and, sometimes, open hostility. Waldo Smith recaptures here the flavour of this rugged bygone era." Dust jacket has several small chips and tears - some with creses, light browning, light soiling, light water staining on lower half and on spine. Very Good/Good-

"In 1901 the Canadian Pacific Railway Company acquired control of the pioneering Canadian Pacific Navigation Company which for 20 years had provided the principal steamship services for the British Columbia coast and a major link between Puget Sound and Alaska. The CPR's palatial intercity liners of the famed Triangle Route between Seattle, Victoria and Vancouver captured the public eye but there were other less renowned aspects of the Princess fleet's history that could not go unrecorded: the coastal freighters; the tugs; the riverboats of the lower Fraser River; the war services of the 'Princess Kathleen' and 'Princess Marguerite'; the CPR's Atlantic Princesses; the pioneering automobile ferry 'Motor Princess', and the competition of Puget Sound Navigation, Grand Trunk Pacific, Union Steam, Canadian National, Black Ball, and finally, British Columbia Ferries."
