61 Mosier, John. THE MYTH OF THE GREAT WAR: A NEW MILITARY HISTORY OF WORLD WAR I
New York HarperCollins 2001 0060196769 / 9780060196769 First Edition Very Good Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w maps. "Based on a decade of research into previously unused French and German sources, (this book) shows what actually happened at the front as the participants perceived it at the time, as opposed to what French and British commanders and governments claimed. John Mosier, who visited all the major battlefields, describes and analyzes campaigns that are routinely neglected or ignored and shows why conventional accounts of such major battles as Verdun are incorrect. He explains how German tactics, weapons, training and leadership were consistently superior, and why the endless, ineffective attacks of the French and British with inferior weapons and battle tactics of the previous century resulted in mindless slaughter and defeat. Mosier also discusses the major military leaders on both sides - including Joffre, Petain, Foch, Gallieni, French, Haig, Wilson, Moltke, Ludendorff, Falkenhayn, Mudra, and Pershing. The French and British military controlled, suppressed, and manipulated all battlefield reports. German losses were magnified; failures became successes, defeats victories. Allied intelligence was grossly inaccurate and inadequate, and the result was a distorted picture of what was really happening. Absorbing and persuasive, 'The Myth of the Great War' is a striking new assessment of the military realities of World War I." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint finger print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, minor rubbing.

A MORE UNBENDING BATTLE: THE HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS' STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM IN WWI AND EQUALITY AT HOME., Nelson, Peter N.
62 Nelson, Peter N. A MORE UNBENDING BATTLE: THE HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS' STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM IN WWI AND EQUALITY AT HOME.
New York BasicCivitas 2009 0465003176 / 9780465003174 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. In a war where the vast majority of black soldiers served in the Service of Supply, unloading ships and building roads and railroads, the men of the 369th trained and fought side by side with the French at the front (America's segregation policy prohibited them from serving together with white American soldiers) and ultimately spent more days in the trenches than any other American unit. They went to war in defense of a country afflicted by segregation, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and racial violence, but a country they believed in all the same. Despite extraordinary odds, the 369th became one of the most successful - and feared - regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, showed extraordinary valor on the battlefield, with many soldiers winning the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor, and were the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine River. A riveting depiction of both social triumph and battlefield heroism." Tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

MOORE OF CORUNNA., Parkinson, Roger.
64 Parkinson, Roger. MOORE OF CORUNNA.
St. Albans Hart-Davis, MacGibbon 1976 0246107553 / 9780246107558 First Edition Very Good Very Good
245 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "Of all British generals who claim the admiration of future generations, Sir John Moore perhaps most truly embodies the ideal of the perfect leader. His courage, tactical brilliance, decisiveness, incorruptibility, and gift for firing the spirits of his men in battle were combined with a conscientious regard for the authority of his government at home - even when its dictates were at odds with his own sense of the military realities. Roger Parkinson portrays, with a vitality that matches his subject, Moore's extraordinary career: from the first taste of action against the rebel in America to his early personal triumphs against the French in Corsica, Holland and Egypt. Then came the clouds of controversy; Moore's involvement in uneasy and dangerous relationships with local authorities in Corsica, Sicily and Sweden brought criticism as well as fame, and foreshadowed the tragic role he would play in the Peninsular War. The desperate retreat to Corunna and the last heroic stand against Napoleon's armies are movingly and dramatically told. Dominating the tumult of events and intrigues is the character of a man in whom 'exertions amongst dangers and difficulties is preferred to idleness', whose private feelings were subordinated to loyalty to his country and the passionate love of his profession; a restrained eighteenth century gentleman who gave a captured French commander his own sword to make him feel more comfortable, and who continued to ask as the last life ebbed from his body, 'Are the French beaten?'." Book slightly cocked, light wrinkling at top of spine, small very light stain on text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, one tiny edge tear, light liquid stain at bottom inside spine.

66 Pigott, Stuart. LIFE BEYOND LIEBFRAUMILCH: UNDERSTANDING GERMAN FINE WINE.
London Sidgwick & Jackson 1988 0283995807 / 9780283995804 First Edition Near Fine Ian Ritchie, jacket Illustration. Maps by Katharina Kelly.
262 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions of labels. "In recent years German wine has earned itself the reputation of being little more than cheap wine for quaffing. Yet the days of crude commercialization debasing a nation's wines may be over: for German wine producers, claims wine expert Stuart Pigott, are now showing renewed commitment to quality and classic wine styles. The leaders of this revival, and their wines, occupy centre stage in this highly informative book. Through well over 100 fascinating profiles, the author guides us through the regions and charts a clear path towards an easy understanding of Germany's diversity of counry and fine wines. (He) introduces many little-known producers of excellent wines that offer astonishing value for money, and points the finger firmly at those famous names which can no longer be relied upon. Some of his findings will surprise: he shows, for example, how red wines are emerging alongside the white wines for which Germany has long been renowned. (This book) is the product of years of meticulous research in Germany. It constitutes a refreshing reassessment of some of the world's least understood wines." Clean and tight.

69 Ruge, Friedrich. Foreword by Lt. Gen. E.B. Roberts. Translated by Ursula R. Moessner. ROMMEL IN NORMANDY. REMINISCENCES BY FRIEDRICH RUGE.
San Rafael, California Presidio 1979 0891410104 / 9780891410102 First American Edition Very Good Good
266 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "As Rommel's naval adviser, Friedrich Ruge is uniquely qualified to bring out the man behind the legend. In the months before the Normandy invasion, Ruge accompanied Rommel on his tours of the French coast. He was a firsthand witness to the frustration and despair that frequently overcame German officers at the impossibility of the task imposed on them by Hitler's irrational optimism. Defeat was certain, yet Rommel did his best to defend the coast against imminent invasion. He encouraged his men and tried to instill some feeling of optimism about the eventual outcome of the war and the reconstruction of Germany. After the Allied landing Rommel fought against the corruption, petty ambitions, and jealousies of the high command. Implicated in the assassination attempt against Hitler, Rommel was secretly murdered, then given the mockery of a state funeral. In their time spent together, Rommel and Ruge became close. Their formal talks concerned problems of coastal defense and reserve forces, but their informal conversation was off the record and confidences were shared. Rommel carried a heavy emotional burden, the author recalls, 'He felt responsible for the fate of the whole nation'. Through Ruge's eyes Rommel emerges as a man to be respected for his personal qualities as well as his military exploits, a man of stature, facing the most difficult time in his life." Small dent in top edge of rear board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light soiling, a few small blue dye stains on rear flap, a few very small tears archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny chips, minor browning.

New York Gallery 1990 0831726725 / 9780831726720 Very Good+ Very Good
80 pp, 12 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "In August 1941 a handful of young Americans disembarked at Rangoon, Burma, the first contingent of fighter pilots of Claire Lee Chennault's American Volunteer Group. Enlisted from the US Army, Navy and Marine Corps to aid the Chinese Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-shek in their bitter war against the Japanese, Chennault's aviators were destined to gain worldwide renown as the Flying Tigers. Within the year the Flying Tigers' distinctive shark-toothed P-40 fighters would be credited with destroying nearly 300 enemy aircraft. Chennault was an innovative aerial tactician and, recognizing his unit's acute shortages of pilots and aircraft, decreed that his three squadrons - the Adam and Eves, Hell's Angels, and Panda Bears - were only to engage the enemy on the most favorable terms. His strict code of war paid dividends during the hard-fought air combats over Rangoon in which the Flying Tigers consistently outfought a numerically superior enemy, thereby preventing the Japanese from gaining air superiority over the Burmese capital and allowing the British and Imperial ground troops to make their escape to the Indian border. 'Flying Tigers' retells the full story behind one of World War II's most colorful fighting elite forces, from the recruitment of the first pilots, through their intial training in Burma and the savage dogfights over Rangoon, to their missions defending the retreating Allied forces. A final chapter looks at the demise of the unit and makes a critical assessment of its contribution to the Allied war effort." Minor corner wear. Dust jacket has light rubbing, some areas of very light edge wear/wrinkling, small tear wrinkling at top of spine - archivally taped.

RHODESIA., Todd, Judith.
79 Todd, Judith. RHODESIA.
London MacGibbon & Kee 1966 First Edition Very Good - Good+
170 pp, 8 3/4" H. "Judith Todd sets out some facts on the origins of the dispute over Rhodesia (the current Zimbabwe). As the daughter of a former Prime Minister she is in a good position to know part of the story from the inside. Her father is now 'restricted' by an order made by an illegal government. Miss Todd was brought up on a mission station in Rhodesia and while she understands perfectly well the European achievement in this part of Africa, she has seen also that it is not enough. Not at least while the great majority of the population is thwarted politically and socially underprivileged to an extreme degree. Their leaders are cajoled, penalised; their sympathisers are made victims of the most crude political enmity - amounting almost to hysteria. Miss Todd is devoted to the best and long-lasting aspirations of this beautiful country. She can, therefore, bear the revilement that the friends of the misguided and ultimately doomed Rhodesian government have to offer. Patriotism may well not be enough; but justicce and freedom are necessary foundations to any patriotism deserving of the name." Chapter headings: 'The Police and the Army are Ready'; In the Beginning; The Essence of Discrimination; Right Turn Ahead; Sowing the Seeds; Where the Banished Ones Sleep; White Myths and Black Realities; Civilised Standards; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness; 'The Respect for the Opinions of Mankind'; Happy New Year!; Not the End of the World; The Consent of the Governed. 48 pp, 8 15/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. 8 colour plates, 21b&w illustrations. "In this book (C.V. Wedgwood) has chosen, after a brilliant general survey of her subject, to describe the most important battles which have taken place in Britain - the battle of Hastings, Edghill, Marston Moor, Killiecrankie, Dunbar - up to the last battle of all, the Battle of Britain. The stories of these battles are fascinating and exciting and the qualities of the great leaders - of Harold, Rupe r t , M o n trose, Fairfax, Cromwell, Dundee - are freshly presented within this limited focus. Most people have at some time stood on the site of an old battlefield and wished to have a clearer and more accurate picture of the historic event than h is k n ow le dg e could command. This Miss Wedgwood now makes possible, and the reader of the book will look at Maiden Castle and the field of Naseby and all the sites of our historic battles with reawakened interest and pride."
