390 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0807823201 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "During the late summer of 1862, Confederate forces launched a three-pronged strategic advance into the North in both major theaters of t he war. The results of this offensive - the only coordinated Confederate attempt to carry the conflict to the enemy - were disastrous. In the eastern theater, Lee was forced out of Maryland after his defeat at Antietam, and in the West, Bra g g w a g e d a dismal campaign and had to retreat from Kentucky. The third prong of the Confederate offensive, the northern Mississippi campaign, culminated in devastating defeats at Iuka and Corinth that ultimately opened the way for Grant's cam pa ig n a ga in st Vicksburg. Peter Cozzens here presents the first book-length study of the battles of Iuka and Corinth...(and) details the tactical aspects of each battle, analyzing troop movements down to the regimental level. In addition to a v ivi d and de tai led battle narrative, Cozzens provides compelling portraits of the campaign's key leaders: Generals Grant, Rosecrans, Van Dorn, and Price. He exposes the consequences of their clashing ambitions and antipathies....Finally, (h e) a naly ze s th e la rger , st rategic implications of the northern Mississippi campaign, exploring the repercussions of the Confederate defeat suffered at Iuka and Corinth." Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

RINGING THE CHANGES: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY., De la Roche, Mazo.
77 De la Roche, Mazo. RINGING THE CHANGES: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good-
304 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "Jalna, the tremendous tribe of Whiteoaks, the distant Canadian background, with its maple trees, its great lake, its fascinating mixture of primitive outdoors and civilised comfort: was it from such a background that Mazo de la Roche sprang? In this long family chronicle stretching from generation to generation, has she been telling us something of herself? (This book) answers these questions. Here is a vivid re-creation of (her) life, in some ways so like the life of a Whiteoak, but always individual and characteristic. The background is the same, the beautiful section of Ontario that borders on one of the great Canadian lakes, but the experience is different. She gives us a spontaneously written account of the rather strange childhood of one who was born with the writer's eye, who grew to use her gifts, and for whom discerning Fortune gave the opportunity of finding a world-wide audience, approached in so many languages, retained through so many years. But (it) is not only about a writer's work. It is a story of friendships and travel, of animal friends as well as human ones; and of a perfect companionship that has endured nearly a lifetime, and is honoured in the dedicatory inscription to the book." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price clipped; has light edge wear and tiny chip/tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds; moderate browning on rear panel, spine and flap-folds, slight waviness along top/bottom edges of both panels.

Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1937 First Canadian Edition Very Good Poor A.H. Watson, dust jacket illustration. (Alice Helena Watson.)
258 pp, 7 1/2" H. Bright blue cloth with gilt lettering/decoration on spine. "(O)ne of those rare books which capture the elusive qualities of childhood with integrity and naturalness. From the moment of their arrival in Plymouth, with a great mound of luggage, throughout their journeyings in search of a home and their final coming to anchor in 'The Very House', the doings of this unconventional family are described with detached gaiety. The characters are lovable and very much alive, not least among them Dan and Robbie, the Scottie and the Cairn. In the sombre house, with its massive trees and views to the mountains of Wales, Gillian and Diggory lead their eager and sensitive lives that now mingle with the life of the grown-ups and now voyage to the remote realms of childhood. They still retain their individuality that so soon disappears when children are regimented into school life. Readers who remember the poignant delights and swift sorrows of their own childhood will find deep pleasrue in this penetrating record." 320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." Book is Fine.
