61 Gage, S.R. FORGOTTEN PLACES IN THE NORTH.
Mosaic, (Oakville, Ontario, 2001).
166 pp, 8vo, soft cover. B&w photos. "Across the broad expanse of Canada's North there are few physical reminders of the rich history of the land and its people. (This book) examines three rare cases where heritage structures have withstood the ravages of time and an unforgiving climate. York Factory was the key staging area of the Hudson's Bay Company for over two hundred years. From its construction in 1830, the 'Depot' warehouse held a wealth of trade goods that lured the trappers of the Northwest. Herschel Island, off the north coast of the Yukon, became the unlikely winter home to hundreds of Yankee whalers in the 1890s. The buildings of this abandoned settlement still remain. The Mid-Canada Line was an electronic Cold War bastion that stretched the length of Canada's 55th parallel. This national project stood against American ambition to the south and the Soviet threat from the north." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing to covers, tiny stain to fore-edge of textblock with slight migration into margin of a few pages, spine flat and uncreased. VG

WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?, Granatstein, J.L.
63 Granatstein, J.L. WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?
Toronto Phyllis Bruce / HarperFlamingo 2004 0002006758 / 9780002006750 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "With tragic helicopter crashes and out-of-date equipment, our military lurches towards irrelevance as our politicians dither. Our personnel are stretched far too thinly and are ill-prepared for the battlefield or increasingly dangerous peacekeeping. In truth, we rank 34th among nations in the provision of UN peacekeeping troops. And since 9/11 and the Iraq War, the United States is seriously re-evaluating our ability to defend our half of North America against terrorism. J.L. Granatstein argues that we are all too willing to hide behind anti-American sentiment, while ignoring the reality that we Canadians have failed our military. Who are the killers of the Canadian army, navy and air force? Granatstein fingers a series of governments since the Second World War who have never understood our military heritage and who have drained military expenditures for years. From Pierre Trudeau to Brian Mulroney to Jean Cretien, (this book) is a catalogue of prime ministers who have never supported adequate military spending. But Granatstein also places blame on ordinary Canadians who have allowed such changes to take place while clinging to the myth that we are the ultimate global peacekeepers. How can we expect the men and women of the Canadian forces to risk their lives for us when we are not prepared to protect and support them in turn? Here is an articulate and impassioned argument for a well- trained, well-funded military so that we can take our place among those who defend freedom in this century." Minor rubbing on boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

320 pp, large 4to (11 5/16" H). "Subtle, enigmatic patterns woven into Cambodian silk textiles speak of origins in an ancient past, with resonances continuing to the present. While Cambodian textiles may justifiably be regarded as works of art in Western terms, their cultural relevance and vitality, which defines their quintessential character, is only beginning to be be appreciated and understood. This is the first book to document and explain this rich textile and costume tradition. Written for collectors, curators, travellers, textile artists and aficionados, it identifies and explains the essential role textiles play in traditional Cambodian life, society and religious practices. Lavishly illustrated with over 300 colour images, the book includes images of antique textiles held in both private collections and major public institutions, historic images and specially-commissioned line drawings and diagrams.
