Green and white endpapers, four b&w illustrations by Harrison Cady, including frontispiece (collated). "There is nothing Bowser the Hound enjoys quite so much as to hunt someone who will give him a long, hard run. That is why one day he ran so far from home, while following the trail of Old Man Coyote, that he could not find his way back to Farmer Brown's. Fortunately for Bowser, Blacky the Crow was sorry for him and led him to a strange farmhouse where he was petted and fed. But Bowser was not happy. He knew all the time that he was a prisoner and missed his snug little house and his master. If crafty Blacky had not found a way of getting him back home, and if Reddy the Fox had not been so hungry for a fat hen, Bowser still might be lost." Soft crease down spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, moderate small edge creases - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap folds, several very small edge tears and a few very small edge chips, some old tape on inside, small taped tear on spine, a few tiny scuffs, three creases down front panel, some light toning on flap folds, very light soiling and rubbing on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

192 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "When Cedric Tremain is charged with murder-ing his father, by booby-trapping his fishing boat, all the locals agree that this wouldn't be his sort of crime. But the case against him is strong: he has the motive, the opportunity, the know-how; and there's some hard circumstantial evidence against him. So he is arrested. But there are things about the case which Chief Superintendent Wycliffe doesn't like. So he keeps nosing around. And his investigations lead him into the details of another murder case, one that is now twenty years old. Is it possible that there is some relationship between the two cases, and if so what? As Wycliffe, that most unorthodox of detectives, probes into the present and the past, our own suspicions and assumptions are being constantly challenged." ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES., Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young.
74 Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young. ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES.
Longmans, Green, London, 1968, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans, 2 portraits. "The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13) holds a special place in the annals of several European armies. The protracted struggle produced a number of great cap tains - John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, Prince Eugene of Savoy and the French Marshal Villars - and their respective martial achievements still exert a strong fascination. Two of their contemporaries who throw a considerable amoun t o f l i ght on the day-to-day conduct of Marlborough's most important campaigns, with their roll-call of famous successes - Blenheim, Raimillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the lines of Ne Plus Ultra - are Capt. Robert Parker of the Royal Regiment o f F oo t o f Ir eland (whose 'Memoirs', though often briefly quoted, have not been republished since they first appeared some time after his death); and the Comte de Merode-Westerloo whose 'Memoires' are hardly known outside Belgium. In almost ever y re spe ct t he y p resent striking contrasts, in birth, rank and character, and their differences are reflected in their writing. Parker, an Irishman of obscure origins, reached the relatively humble rank of Captain of Grenadiers. His whole mil it ary lif e w as int imat ely bound up with his regimental family. His feelings for Marlborough at times amount to uncritical hero-worship. From first to last he reveals himself as a highly competent professional soldier of modest and unpretenti ous cha racte r. The Com te de Merode-Westerloo, a great magnate in Flanders with a redoubtable ancestry behind him, eventually became a Field-Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire - not that he had begun the war in the Emperor's service, but in that of h is en emies. B rave to t he poi nt of folly, irascible, touchy, overbearingly arrogant, he was continually in trouble. He bore lasting grudges against the men who, he thought, had conspired to ruin his career - Marlborough and Prince Eugene . As a com mander it i s dou btful whether he possessed sufficient cool judgment to merit his appointment to posts of the highest responsiblity. Expertly edited and annotated, the relevant passages from these two memoirs provide a narrative of t his gr eat war of ext raord inary immedi acy and fascination. It will also be invaluable to students of the period." Small soiling mark on bottom of text block, light wrinkling and tiny tear at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate wear and archiva lly tape d tear a t bott om of spine, light ed ge wear/wrinkling at top of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds, slight browning, minor soiling. ISBN 0670817562 "In sight of green sugar-cane fields and the sea, the Rum Shop and the Tailor Shop are awash with buckshee rum and male talk. W hile Sarge (known to have broken an innocent man's legs with his truncheon) holds forth about blasted 'properganda', Seabert the Tailor has ambitions for a seat in Parliament and his eye on a big car. As a young man, Michael William Wilberf o r c e T h orne - 'Boy' to the villagers - learns about life from these vibrant characters. Coming of age in the Barbados of the 1950s, he is both horrified and fascinated by the political scheming that surrounds him. After spending several yea rs a t a C an ad i an university on a scholarship, Boy returns to his country with a sharper awareness of its people and possibilities. When an election is called and this tiny, colonial island hovers on the brink of a new political dawn, he is t rea ted a s a pol iti ca l saviour, the first of a new breed. This rich novel, at once serious and hilariously funny, gives a wonderfully exuberant picture of life in Barbados in the early 1950s, painted with unflagging humour and zest." PALLY ARCHIE THE MIDGET CLOWN., Claxton, Patricia and Dooner, Faith.
80 Claxton, Patricia and Dooner, Faith. PALLY ARCHIE THE MIDGET CLOWN.
Routledge and Kegan Paul.
155 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Charming b&w illustrations. "This is the story of an ageless midget clown, of his trials and tribulations and eventual triumphs, told in a series of adventures. His origin is obscure, but his fondness for circus life and his obvious skill as a performer gives a hint as to his probably beginnings...He has a wonderful capacity for friendship and proves himself a reliable and loyal companion. Though mischievouness, at times, gets the upper hand, he never wittingly does any person or animal any harm. By his own merits he achieves his ambition of appearing in print and of being summoned to appear at a command performance. And in spite of his acquired wealth and fame, the encouragment and appreciations of his friends are his greatest rewards." Partial small number stamp on free front endpaper, title page missing, minor edge wear, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket is clipped, has several small tears and tiny chips, very light browning, light rubbing, light edge wear. Good reading copy only.
