61 Dunmore, Spencer. ACE.
Lester & Orpen Dennys, (Toronto, 1982), Ist Canadian edition.
262 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...set against the gigantic canvas of the air battles of World War II. (The) protagonist is Ernst Brehme, a fighter pilot serving with the Luftwaffe. But Brehme is no ordinary flyer. He possesses the one-in-a-million combination of qualities that makes him the complete master of his profession - one of the top-scoring pilots of all time - a national hero, idolized, adored. Like so many of his contemporaries, however, Ernst Brehme knows infinitely more about the business of death than about life. Young and naive, he falls deeply in love with a French Jewess several years his senior. Their ill-starred romance is a central theme of this tense, totally gripping adventure..." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, light rubbing, one small closed tear. VG+/VG

62 Eayrs, James. NORTHERN APPROACHES: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR PEACE.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
195 pp, 8 3/4" H. "A brilliant intelligence is brought to bear on the vital issues of Canadian defence and foreign policy, on Canada's relations with the U.S. and the British Commonwealth and the Communist bloc. Canadians do not always look at these problems in the same way as their North American neighbours. This book considers the Canadian 'style' in approaching such questions. (Discusses) difficult and frightening issues such as the location of the Great Deterrent, the acquisition of nuclear weaons, the fate of the Avro Arrow, civil defence. (Eayrs) examines the 'Nostrum of Neutralism' and while he concedes its appeal, concludes that the arguments in its favour are not valid at present. Commonwealth concerns, the monarchy, America's ill-fated intervention in Cuba, the role of the United Nations, the non-recognition of Communist China - all these questions and others of the kind are fearlessly and realistically discussed." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has beem price-clipped, has very light soiling/rubbing, light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny edge tears archivally taped.

218 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2"H). B&w maps, photos. "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, (Neville Duke) found himself, aged 19, as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing, often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade, lessons that were to prove invaluable when, in November, he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn, he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa, winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires, he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign, was a warded the DSO, then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight, returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre..." 179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." One very tiny corner bump to front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.
