Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 802015301 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
344 pp, square (8 7/8" H x 8 7/8" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The nineteenth century opened in the flicker of tallow candles. It closed in the glare of Edison's electric lamp. Dr. Russell records with scientific attention to detail - backed up with more than 200 illustrations - how these lamps were made and used. His text is interspersed with accounts of his own experiments with the fuels and mechanisms of earlier generations. The discovery of kerosene is related in full, as is the invention of successively improved kerosene burners, lamps, and chimneys - a field up to now neglected by technological historians. 75 Thomson, Gary. VILLAGE LIFE IN UPPER CANADA.
Belleville, Ontario Mika Publishing 1988 0921341180 / 9780921341185 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
160 pp, 11 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, map. "Illustrated with scenes of early settler's activities carried out by the 'inhabitants' of Upper Canada Village, the book in story and picture links the present to the past and invites you back into the 19th century. How did this village come to be? In the 1950's, the building of a major hydro electric power plant on the St. Lawrence threatened to destroy nearly two centuries of Eastern Ontario heritage. Eight villages and some 35 miles of riverfront were flooded as a result of the St. Lawrence Seaway project. Saved from the overflowing (river), buildings and artifacts were collected and Upper Canada Village was created to represent a typical riverfront community in the days just prior to Confederation in 1867. Today Upper Canada Village exists as a new and planned community of historically significant homes and buildings, opening for study and observation that time period when pioneer immigrants shaped Upper Canada from hostile wilderness into a settled, thriving province." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds - very minor wrinkling elsewhere.

MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON., Volk, Conrad.
77 Volk, Conrad. MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON.
Phillimore, London, (1971), first edition.
240 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Born in Brighton in 1851, Magnus Volk was a true pioneer of electrical engineering. While still in his early twenties he was employing a dozen or more workpeople, making a simple telegraph set which sold all over the world. In 1879, when he married, his house was the first in Brighton to have electric lighting...It was in 1883 that he built his original little railway in Great Britain. This was the start of a long struggle against both man and nature; but Magnus reacted typically to opposition, and extended the line - twice. Not content with this, he built another railway further east - a truly fantastic conception, nick-named 'Daddy-Long-Legs'. The book tells the extraordinary story of the electric motor-car he made; of the order he received for another like it from the Sultan of Turkey - surely the earliest export order for a car ever to reach this country; and of his visit to Constantinople to deliver it in person. Then there were the telephone exchanges, the electric launches, the submarine mines, the X-Ray equipment...and still the list could be lengthened. Local and family history, topography, Victoriana, engineering archives, the history of motoring and aviation - there is plenty here, in both text and illustration, for all whose interests lie expecially in these fields; while for the general reader there is the story of a whole - written simply and not without humour; a record of endeavour, of dogged tenacity in the face of relentless opposition and ill-fortune. A study, in short, of a very remarkable man." Slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, has very light rubbing, and is price clipped. VG +/VG

UNDER THE ELECTRIC SKY: THE LEGACY OF THE BILL LYNCH SHOWS., Walsh, Christopher A.
78 Walsh, Christopher A. UNDER THE ELECTRIC SKY: THE LEGACY OF THE BILL LYNCH SHOWS.
Lawrencetown Beach, Nova Scotia Pottersfield 2010 1897426178 / 9781897426173 Soft Cover Near Fine
158 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)akes readers on a thrilling ride through the strange and fabled history of the Bill Lynch Shows, from its modest beginnings on McNab's Island in Halifax Harbour to the successful, tumultuous years criss-crossing the countryside to its current incarnation struggling along dark Maritime highways today. This is one of the most curious stories of this region's past, one never completely understood and, until now, never told in its entirety. The Bill Lynch Shows would breeze into small Maritime towns after dark, packed with enough electricity and magic to illuminate the imaginations of anyone who stepped foot on the midway for the brief while it played their town. For many, its return after a long winter made summer official. The shows became entrenched in the collective psyche, at once the centre of earthly thrills and some of the greatest acts of charity ever witnessed in the region. Clarence 'Soggy' Reid continued the enterprise in the same manner, until the death of a man on the carnival lot in Port Hawkesbury threatened to destroy the dream forever. Walsh chronicles the true story of the Maritime carnival with unflinching detail, weaving flashes of the carnival's captivating past with a first-hand account of life on the carnival lot today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing.
