MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915., Baynes, John.
66 Baynes, John. MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915.
Cassell, London, 1967.
286 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under t h e m i c r o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. At the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March, 19 15 , w he n it w en t 'over the top' it was some 900 strong. Six days later the battalion marched out of the line, still a fighting, disciplined unit. It was 150 strong and was commanded by a second-lieutenant. What enabled those men to keep the ir sp ir it, t hei r t ena ci ty and dash in those awful six days, so graphically recreated here, was their morale. Major Baynes has interviewed the know survivors of the battle and analysed hundreds of books, reports and private papers pertinent to his 's ampl e'. He exa mine s t he social background of the officers and men, their service, their homes, their education, upbringing, beliefs and attitudes. With the advantage of hindsight, he has evaluated their inter-relationships, their loy alti es, and t he r ules and c onven tion s by which they lived. The result is a stimulating book, important in areas far removed from the bloody fields of Flanders." Ex-library copy with some of the usual stamps, old tape and pocket removal m arks , thr ee a reas o f lig ht da mpness marks on f ront board and hinge, free front endpaper missing, a few pages with dog-ear creases, five lines of text on page 92 have green hi-liter. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkli ng, f ading to sp ine and some edges, label removal and t ape marks, several small tears - some taped. Good- reading copy only.

Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

Sketches, illustrations, poetry, diary entries - all were recorded in each prisoner's log book. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
74 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Most of the front panel of the dust jacket has been laid in the front of the book, but the rest is missing. Signed on title page: "Ethel Hume Bennett, / Christmas 1936 / Toronto." "Good story of a group of young people who succeed in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a model ship, a seal, a miniature and a deed -- all keys to the future happiness of one of the group. Perhaps luck is with them to a surprising degree, but, none the less, the following down of clues is well developed and less left to chance than in the average juvenile mystery yarns. 77 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

Toronto HarperCollins / Phyllis Bruce 2005 0002007894 / 9780002007894 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
384 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The lives of two dazzling aristocratic sisters, Lucy and Dorothy Percy, present a perfect window into the world of political unrest and social intrigue of seventeenth-century English society. Their breeding, beauty, and cunning made them among the most influential women of their time. Born during the reign of Elizabeth I, the Percy sisters came to prominence at the court of Charles I. Lucy, the Countess of Carlisle - the 'court lady' - dominated the royal scene thanks to her position at the center of power. Her beauty, captured in magnificent Van Dyck portraits, and her political skill attracted prominent lovers, and her charm and talents as a gossip ensured her inclusion in the Queen's inner circle. Then, her machinations during the Civil WAr led to her imprisonment in the Tower of London. Her sister, Dorothy, Countess of Leicester - the 'country wife' - had twelve surviving children and managed the family estates while her husband traveled abroad or immersed himself in books. As a diplomat's wife, she was brilliant, with a keen eye and special purview of European politics. This early ancestor of Princess Diana's family was also a shrewish wife who bossed her mate for more than thirty-seven years before he rebelled publicly, causing a scandal. (This book) brilliantly depicts the position of upper-class women in seventeenth-century Britain and illuminates a grand and turbulent era." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine.
