London Leo Cooper 1993 0850523206 / 9780850523201 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
169 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Maps. "Between the years 1948 and 1960, British armed forces were involved in six campaigns overseas, in Malaya, Korea, Cyprus, Suez and South Arabia. In order to provide the manpower for these operations, fixed-term universal male peacetime conscription was instituted for the only time in this country's history. Of the million and a half men called up on reaching the age of eighteen, about a hundred and twenty-five thousand, or one in twelve, served in an active theatre of operations, for which a campaign medal was awarded. This book consists of the reminiscences of twenty-three of these men, who each served in one, or in some cases two, of the six campaigns. They recall, often with some emotion, their service in far-off places, against largely invisible enemies, in pursuit of aims which remain obscure to this day. They remember the brutality, the hardship, the excitement and the humour of an experience which for all of them appears to have been an important, if sometimes painful, part of the process of growing up. They also record, in many cases, the indifference, both personal and official, with which they were treated on their return home, and this book represents an attempt, however small and belated, to set straight the record regarding the achievements of these 'virgin soldiers'." Very light browning to top of textblock, small ghost sticker mark on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing - mainly on rear panel.

STORIES OF FAMOUS REGIMENTS., Warner, Philip.
70 Warner, Philip. STORIES OF FAMOUS REGIMENTS.
Arthur Baker, London, (1975).
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps, photos, reproductions. "...drawing upon contemporary diaries and reports of campaigns ranging from the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea, South Africa and India to the First and Second World Wars, (the author) has recreated some of the many acts of heroism performed by the British soldier. Futile though some of them may have eventually proved, such as the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade and the tragic stand at Maiwand, there is no doubting the outstanding courage of their perpetrators. The words of men who were present at the scenes of conflict described here, successful or otherwise, speak more clearly and movingly than any second hand account." Previous owner's name/date on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has minor edge wear. VG+/VG+

Alun, Port Talbot, 1987.
319 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0907117465 "Rachael Ann Bowen was born into the comfortable world of the Edwardian middle classes, but soon her father's illness and death left the family struggling to avoid the workhouse. In the following years the Bowens shared in full the poverty and tragedy of the Valleys, surviving only by their faith and humour; until Rachael was swept off her feet by the tall, dark and handsome Ivor Webb and settled down to married life in Mae steg. But this was only the beginning. Soon the young couple decided to emigrate to Australia - only to find that the advertised land of milk and honey was even more merciless than the Depression in Wales that they had left. Yet unemploy m e n t , w i l d animals, hostile natives and the constant fight against the unrelenting harshness of the country were only new challenges to be faced. (This) is not only story of remarkable courage, faith and independence; it is also a portrait ga ll er y of al mo st Dickensian richness. We meet Rachael's own family, of course, but also the eccentric revolutionary Dr. William Price of Llantrisant; Matron Phillips and Sister Silverside, the two English nurses who wanted to adopt her; the cu rio us in hab i tan ts of the seedy London boarding house where she almost fell a victim to White Slavers; and even the young Stanley Baker at his first audition." Very light browning to pages and edges of textblock, book is slightly cocked, mi nor edge we ar. Du st jac ket ha s light edge wrinkling, light wrinkling and scattered tiny dints/indentations, two tiny tears archivally taped. Very Good/Very Good-

702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence." THE ASSASSINATION OF MARILYN MONROE., Wolfe, Donald H.
74 Wolfe, Donald H. THE ASSASSINATION OF MARILYN MONROE.
Little, Brown, London, 1998, first British edition.
532 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0316640190 B&w photographs. "The brevity and discrepancies of the initial investigation, the unexplained silence of several key witnesses and the rumours sparked by her relationships with the Kennedy brothers have consistently raised suspicions that the events of Saturday August 4th 1962 did not end as they were officially documented - in the suicide of the world's most famous woman. Now, in this major new investigation, Donald H. Wolfe has succeeded where so many other writers have failed. With the testimony of the two witnesses, John Miner and Norman Jefferies, who always seemed to possess potentially explosive information but had never previously come forward, Wol f e assembles conclusive evidence proving that Marily Monroe was murdered. He not only names her killer and specifies the cause of death, but identifies the men who, acting upon the 'National Security Matter' surrounding Marilyn, orchestrated the su bs e quent cover-up - From the opening description of the lifeless body to the moment-by-moment account of her final days and hours, (this book) explodes every myth concerning her remarkable life and tragic death. It is a truly gripping portrait of on e of the most shocking crimes of the century." Book lightly cocked, one tiny corner bump. 75 Zaslow, Morris. THE NORTHWARD EXPANSION OF CANADA, 1914-1967.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771090714 / 9780771090714 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
421 pp, 9 1/4" H. One of 'The Canadian Centenary Series'. B&w photographs, maps. "In the concluding volume of his study of the Canadian North since Confederation, Morris Zaslow details with encyclopedic scope the accelerating change typical of the second half of that era. In this period the frontiers of agriculture and industry swept northward from near the international border to their economic limits. In the search for oil and natural gas, these limits were also close to the country's physical limits. Assisted by new roads, extended railways, improved river transportation, and the new airplane, settlers, prospectors, and developers cleared land, sought mineral treasures, opened enterprises, and established permanent settlements in areas formerly given over to hunting and trapping by the native peoples. At the same time, the institutions of society and government familiar to southern Canada followed at a more measured pace." Minor wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has small light stain on front panel, wrinkling at bottom of flap-folds with old tape on inside surface - very light edge wrinkling elsewhere.
