BAROQUE IN ITALY., Lees-Milne, James.
61 Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN ITALY.
London B.T. Batsford 1959 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
216 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans. "(Lees-Milne writes about) the development of building in Italy from the Mannerist period, that is, the later sixteenth century, to the emergence of Rococo in the early eighteenth century. (He) believes that Baroque in Italy was a religious manifestation, Latin, Catholic and primarily Roman and his book deals largely with ecclesiastical architecture in Rome itself. Piedmont was the next most important influence in the style, and so, after introducting the colossal personalities of Bernini, Borromini and their disciples, he concentrates upon the work of Guarini, Juvara and their followers. But he is not concerned exclusively with architecture; he discusses the Baroque style as it manifested itself in the work of the painters, such as Caravaggio and Pietro da Cortona and the sculptors, above all Bernini. In reading the book the reader has the grateful impression, not so much of being instructed, as of sharing in the author's own pleasures and discoveries, for Mr. Lees-Milne has a winning and persuasive style exceptional in a work of learning." Small label from bookstore on front pastedown, foxing marks on front free endpaper, one small foxing mark on rear free endpaper, light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling - mostly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small tears (with crease between) on rear panel, light foxing marks on flaps and on flap-folds.

BAROQUE IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL AND ITS ANTECEDENTS., Lees-Milne, James.
62 Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL AND ITS ANTECEDENTS.
London B.T. Batsford 1960 First Edition Very Good- Very Good-
224 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans/elevations. "(S)tarting in the sixteenth century, author and reader begin their survey of Iberian Baroque with the Plateresque in Spain and the Manoeline in Portugal, and continue it until, two hundred or so years later, they reach the High Baroque conclusion of Castile, Seville and Granada, and the Rococo decadence of eighteenth-century Portugal. On the way they will have examined some architectural and sculptural masterpieces of astonishing quality and individuality: the palaces or houses of Mafra, Queluz and La Granja; Santiago da Compostela, the Escorial, the Cartuja of Coimbra; sculpture at Macarena, Alcobaca and Arouca; the Transparante of Toledo Cathedral, the convents of Bom Jesus, Tomar and Evora. These, and many other churches, cathedrals, palaces and domestic buildings are illustrated in a collection of nearly 100 pictures which show, as unmistakably as Mr. Lees -Milne's text, that Baroque, while it transcends frontiers, partakes as fully as any other style in regional and national characteristics." A few foxing marks on rear free endpaper, slight bump at top corner of both boards, two shallow bumps on fore- edge of front board, light edge wear - mainly at corners and at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top of rear hinge/spine. 98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." Soft crease at top corner of first few pages, slight waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

PAUL MANSHIP., Manship, John.
66 Manship, John. PAUL MANSHIP.
Abbeville, New York, 1989, first edition.
216 pp, folio (13 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1558590021 Beautifully illustrated in color and b&w. "From his sexy little bronze nymphs to his soaring golden 'Prometheus' at Rockefeller Center, the sculptures of Paul Manship have begu iled the public through much of this century. This dazzling monograph - as elegantly sophisticated as the artist's own oeuvre - celebrates the life's work of America's master of Art Deco.....As close to a jet setter as one could be in an e r a o f o c e an travel, Manship spent much of the early 1920s in Paris, where he was one of two American sculptors to have work included in the famous 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes' (the show that gave us th e t er m A rt D ec o). His worldwide reputation flourished in the 1930s with monumental commissions for the Bronx Zoo, Rockefeller Center, the New York World's Fair, and a multitude of other. The age of Abstract Expressionism eventually threw Man sh ip in to e cli pse , b ut the rediscovery of Art Deco illuminated the charms of his work once again, and his sculptures are again highly admired and passionately collected. This lively biography, affectionately written by Manship's son, pr ovid es muc h ne w i nfo rmat ion abou t the artist's long and productive career. The full range of that career is made vividly clear in the striking illustrations, many never before published. Because Manship was meticulous about documenting his work, th e bo ok in clud es r are s tudi es an d plasters that no longer exist, a revelatory sampling of little-known early and late works, and pristine original views of works that have since suffered the effects of time and weather. The result i s an e ngag ing, enligh tenin g boo k that deft ly cap tures the spirit of an artist wholeheartedly devoted to the pursuit of beauty." Slight waviness to top/bottom of textblock. "(B)rings together, in an entirely new way, analysis of the historical tradition of the female nude and discussion of recent feminist art, and by exploring the ways in which acceptable and unacceptable images of the female body are produced and maintained renews recent debate on high culture and pornography. It represents the first feminist survey of the most significant subject in western art, revealing how the female nude is now both at the centre and at the margins of high culture. At the centre, and within art historical discourse, the female nude is seen as the visual culmination of enlightenment aesthetics; at the edge, it risks losing its repectability and spilling over into the obscene." Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771070276 / 9780771070273 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
308 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Until 1983 Jack Pollock (please note - NOT Jackson Pollock the American artist) was the owner of The Pollock Gallery in Toronto, where he exhibited new Canadian artists. Then, abruptly, he lost both his business and his health. Twenty years of a flamboyant lifestyle had led to drug addiction, open-heart surgery, bankruptcy, and to a profound spiritual and psychological malaise. A broken man, he retreated to the south of France, expecting to die. He didn't die. Instead, he began to come to terms with himself and his life, in part by confiding his deepest feelings in a torrent of letters to M, a psychiatrist he had consulted briefly before his departure. These letters constitute an utterly honest assessment of his life, his work, his self-worth. They speak of his daily life in France, of his past accomplishments, about contemporary art in Canada, the act of painting, the contradictions of religion, and the power of sexuality. There are stories here of the art scene in Toronto in the fifties and sixties, when artists and their supporters from the Greenwich Village area fought to save their community from destruction. Stories, too, of the discovery of Norval Morrisseau, of encounters with David Hockney, Josef Albers, and a host of other acclaimed painters, of passionate arguments with the Art Gallery of Ontario, of battles in the sixties over the censorship of art. Pollock's forthright manner and his vivid style make (this) a powerful, captivating autobiography of unusual intimacy." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling, very light rubbing.
