After introductory information, the volumes follow a year-by-year format from the First French Revolutionary War (1792) to the Battle of Navarin (1827). Under most yearly sections there is a discussion of the British and French Fleets, Light Squadrons and Single Ships, and Colonial Expeditions. Other fleets are introduced when applicable: Spanish, Dutch, Franco-Spanish, Swedish, Russian, etc. as are sections on the West & East Indies, Africa and North & South America. Interiors - All frontispieces and title pages have areas of light toning and foxing - vol. 3 has a small light waterstain in margin of frontispiece; some preliminary pages also have scattered light foxing; most volumes have a few pages with pen and/or pencil notations of varying size in margins and some with underlining of text; some volumes have a few pages with a few scattered light foxing marks and/or small light stains; vol. II has a 1 1/2" tear/creasing at top of frontispiece gutter; vol. IV has a very small chip at the top edge of two page leaves; there are a few small corner creases on pages throughout the six volumes; most fold-out tables have additional fold creases and some have browning/creaes or very small tears at the fore-edges. Exteriors - all volumes have some rubbing on marbled boards and leather; light to moderate edge wear - more at coners; some corners have small bumps; vol. The captain of a coaster bound from the Mersey to the Thames noticed a splash some eight miles away, when off the Pembrokeshire coast, reported it to Ilfracombe Radio Station and made a brief entry in the ship's log. From then on Operation Victor Search was underway. Controlled by H.M.S. Harrier it involved more than 40 ships and 4,000 men and women and was officially described as 'probably the greatest salvage operation of its type ever undertaken'. Those at sea toiled for long and arduous hours, often in the most atrocious weather, throughout a wild winter and much of the following year. When the final signal, 'Return to harbour - search complete' went out, the trawlers, backed by salvage vessels, had carried out more than 12,000 hauls and nearly 600,000 pieced of the missing Victor had been recovered. This represented 70 per cent of the aircraft and gave the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, enough information for them to be 'reasonably satisfied' that they knew the cause of the accident." "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. These battles were of decisive importance in the war against revolutionary France since the defeat of the Spanish Fleet in February, and of the Dutch Fleet eight months later, effectively frustrated the French 'Grand Strategy' of invading Ireland and England. An attempt, inspired by the Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, had been made at the end of the previous year to land a French force in Bantry Bay, but it was a blizzard, rather than the efforts of the English navy, which forced the enemy fleet to return to Brest. The British were lucky on that occasion. "Wounded Allied personnel were invariably repatriated by hospital ships, which ran the gauntlet of mined waters and gambled on the humanity of the U-Boat commanders. For, contrary to the terms of the Geneva Convention, on occasions Germany had sunk the unarmed hospital ships under the pretence they carried reinforcement troops and ammunition. The press seized on these examples of 'Hun Barbarity', especially the drowning on non-combatant female nurses. The crises heighened following the German Government's 1 February 1917 introduction of unrestricted naval warfare. The white-painted Allied hospital ships became, in German eyes, legitimate targets for the U-Boats. As the war on the almost 100 strong fleet of hospital ships intensified the British threatened reprisals against Germany, in particular an Anglo-French bombing raid upon a German town. Undeterred the Germans stepped up their campaign sinking two hospital ships in swift succession. Seven hospital ships struck mines and a further eight were torpedoed. Faced with such a massacre of the innocents Britain decided her hospital ships, painted and brightly lit in accordance with the Geneva Convention, could no longer rely on this immunity. The vessels were repainted in drab colours, defensively armed and sailed as ambulance transports among protected convoys. Germany had successfully banished hospital ships from the high seas."
